| Dec. 7, 2012 MikeC | Topic: Bats Discussion: Which Bat should I use? I have a old Miken Freak from years back and use it for BP it hits darn near like a Ultra. I must have 1,000's of swings on it and still going strong. Will also use it in cold weather games to save the Ultra's. Fossils 20 |
| Dec. 7, 2012 MikeC | Topic: Bats Discussion: Miken SPU2P Ultra II USA 2012 Our team has sent in 4 different Mikens, black Ultra, USA model and Red max loads and Miken has tested them and replaced each one with out any problem. My guess is they test them and replace the bad ones - I am very pleased with their service. Side note have one of the new two piece bats and it is great! Fossil Softball #20 |

| Jan. 4, 2012 MikeC | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Veterans Capt Kirk: I was in the Army stationed on Vung Tau mountain for 2 months helped build the barricks etc when I first got in country Oct. 1967. Was part of the 1st Signal Battalion - was then moved up to Saigon area work at Phu Plam signal base till Sept. 1968. Went through Tet in the Saigon area and that was not much fun. Came out of Nam and was stationed in Ft Hood, Texas from 10/1968 till discharge 8/1969. Loved and hated every minute of the Army but sure think it was an growing up experience for a young pup. I am looking (wife wants a new one) refrigerator I am only going to buy something made in the USA and that cuts down your choices - Maytag/Whirlpool are same company and less than 1/4 are made here, Fridigaire is made in Mexico...Amana made here in Iowa so that is where we are headed. Point is product may be tough to find but we need to look hard. Thanks Brett for your ideas! |
| Oct. 24, 2011 MikeC | Topic: Bats Discussion: Made in USA Ultra II Bought one from Miken and whole team has taken BP with it so well over 300 cuts on it in less than 3 weeks and all is fine. Some of the guys love it and seems to have good pop to it. Normally hit 28 oz Ultra II which I love, is over 3 years maybe 4 years old and great bat don't count swings but has to have 500 + easily. Also have a red 27 oz don't like as well as the 28 black Ultra but it too has 400+ swings and all is well. Miken bat are made right up in Caledonia, MN been to the factory and watched them make the bats. I think like any and all bats some last longer than others I have had Ultra's break in a few hundred swings and own some with well over 400+ cuts but never count so don't know for sure. | April 20, 2011 MikeC | Topic: Bats Discussion: Ultra vs. Combat for newbie Had a Miken 27 red end load and just about everybody on my team hit it last year in games and BP - had to have 250+ swings in it would still have it but was stupid and hit it in cold weather with old balls this spring. Have a 28 black Ultra 3 years old don't use it for BP any longer just for tournament games. Our 60 team all swing Ultra's and have not run into trouble with them breaking after a few swings Mike |

Cost of a tournament: Yearly we run a number of Men’s ASA tournaments offering travel money for winners. I have broken down the cost of the tournament based on 24 teams with an entry fee of $150.00. Entry fee $150 X 24 teams $3,600.00 Hotel Motel money $1,000.00 ------------- Income $4,600.00 Each team plays 2 round robin games then a double elimination tournament begins. So a total of 71 games are played. Umpires @$20.00 a game X 71 games $1,420.00 Softballs @$3.60 each 100 used $ 360.00 Payouts based on 24 teams 1st place $1,000.00 2nd $725.00 3rd $475.00 4th $300.00 5th & 6th $150.@ Payout $2,800.00 Total expense of running tournament $4,580.00 Now this is a entry fee of $150.00 compared to say $600.00 per team – I fully understand that the different organizations are making a nice living off senior softball but if we can charge $150.00 supply softballs and pay umpires + have a prize fund of $2,800.00 can some one explain why senior softball cost so much to play. Then offer nothing for 1st or 2nd place usually – I got a hat for 2nd place at Winter Nationals one year. I do not know but am guessing the communities these national and regional tournaments are held at are also paying a large amount of money to the organizations for bringing these tournaments to town. I know this we bid on ASA State Tournaments each year and our Convention and Visitors Division helps pay a $7K bid to get a 35-40 team tournament to come and stay for one weekend. So you guess what they get for bringing 100+ teams to town. I too love playing Senior Softball but feel like we are getting held up each time we pay a entry fee. Mike |

| June 19, 2009 MikeC | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Fossils Softball Tournament, Waterloo, Iowa Fossils Softball Tournament: Where – Hoing – Rice Softball Complex, Waterloo, Iowa When – August 22nd & 23rd Cost - $75.00 to cover umpires & balls. Reception to follow Saturday’s games sponsored by the “Fossils Softball Team” & "Blackhawk Sports Commission" We have a very nice 5 diamond softball complex and have a history of hosting some very major tournaments. “A” Nationals, Super Nationals, 35 & Over Nationals so we know how to run a tournament and take care of fields! If it rains when it is done we get the fields ready to play – NO city workers involved all volunteer softball players run this complex. Web site for the complex is http://www.waterloosoftball.com/ The Fossils have a 50, 55, and 60 over team & have paid and played in many National and World Tournaments. We would like to host a Senior Tournament that is nothing more than a chance to play games, not a qualifier, not a ring tournament, not a last chance tournament – just a plain old softball tournament. Pool play followed by bracket play. Will probably be double elimination just depending on how many teams we get. Since this is the first regional Senior tournament we may have to play some AA against AAA or Major even but will use equalizer rules and some common sense. Senior softball rules will be used. Will use the winter nationals rules on age to allow upcoming senior guys to play with their new team. Was in Milwaukee last weekend and they had 3 55's plus threw a 60 Major team into the 55 division and then they had only 3 60's teams. Hope if numbers are down like this we don't string things out to 3 days to make money for the hotels. Not all of us 60 players are retired. |

I lost two good friends in Viet Nam just wondering if anyone spent any time with either of them while they were in Nam. Tim Newell from Des Moines, Iowa was Army infantry was one of the dog handlers. Signed up for extra 6 months so could bring dog home with him. Neither made it home. Time was 67-68 or so. Bob Flattery from Ft Dodge, Iowa same time frame. Was stationed with Richard Lacy in Phu Lam he went out to deliver some communications the night Tet started and is still MIA. |

Didn't notice it before our game and then after the game was running around asking our guys if it was their bat. We then played at 6:30 and thought one of the guys would come up missing a bat then but never did. Was going to turn it in after the game but had a team mate that was to sick to play and was back at the hotel and had to call 911 to get hauled into the Emergency Department while we were playing so totally forgot about the bat. Served Phu Lam Signal Group Oct. 1967 to Oct. 1968. Phu Lam was a small signal base just outside Siagon. Through a friend I learned about a web site started up by others stationed there it is http://phulam.com able to log on and read stories talk to others that were stationed there great web site. After finding this web site I was visiting with another Senior ball player and he started searching the web for his company/station in Nam and was able to find a great web site also. So you all may want to do a little searching and you could get back in touch with guys you have been away from for many years. Two years ago we were playing in a qualifier tournament with 6 teams in it and one was a local pick up team to fill in for a team that canceled. We were winning these games easily and after the pool play and before the bracket started Terry himself came to our coach and said we are moving you up RIGHT now and for the rest of the year. This was a very weak field to say the least. Now you are saying even after winning everything all year you wait until the last tournament to move teams? I and many others will wonder if the name of the team or the sponsor for the team has more to do with movement up or down. Thanks for listening. |
