Discussion: NO PITCH OR ILLEGAL PITCH

I've got to agree with both Paul & Dusty. I remember pitching back in the old USSSA days (when I was young..lol) that once the arm went past the hip the ball had to be delivered. The reason for this was to keep pitchers from doing all of the USSSA raindances trying to upset a batter's timing.
On the other hand, I have seen at least several times when a pitcher in senior ball has stopped in mid-delivery for one reason or another and have never seen an umpire rule an illegal pitch.

AVS...to answer your question.....there are plenty of hotels in Oceanside to stay at and their rates are probably a lot less than San Clemente hotels now that summer is here. See you there.

Discussion: Team Coaches Get No Respect

Thank you for a very interesting post #3. I know that running a team can often be a tedious and thankless task. I know from personal experience that it is very often much easier to put that 14th. or 15th. guy in the lineup and hold yourself out to try to ensure that everyone is getting ample playing time.

Our team manager, Paul Smit, and his wife Anna do a remarkable job of getting tournaments scheduled, travel arrangements made, uniforms ordered, etc. and turn the field manager duties over to me. This has proven to be a good system for all of the team. Sometimes it can get a little overwhelming, having 17 or 18 players and trying to get everyone in and stay competitive at the same time.

Although I’ve never met Bill, he sounds like a standup and selfless individual and I wish him and the rest of your team the best this season.

Discussion: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS 2008 RESULTS

Very well put, 4X4....it is indeed a huge commitment but more importantly, it is a chance to compete against the best of your peers and you may never be given that opportunity again.

Our team qualified at the Spring Worlds in Palm Springs last year and unanimously decided to forego the Reno tournament so that everyone could afford the trip to Florida. It turned out to be a good team decision and we all felt very fortunate to the man to have been able to experience theTOC for the first time.

Thanks Chuck.....sorry your team couldn't make it to the TOC...sounds as if you could have used a good dose of the warm weather. It was a great tournament with all of the teams very evenly matched. Hopefully we'll get to see you guys in Phoenix or Vegas this year.

Audie...we're just looking for a couple of rabbits to run down those bombs you guys hit! I'm looking forward to seeing all of our Florida buddies and their lovely families in Maui this May. Are you going to be at the TOC? If so, maybe we'll see you this weekend.

Stoneman, you hit the ball right on the sweet spot with your explanation. I have tried in vain to get them to open up Poway Sportspark here in San Diego several times for senior tourneys, but they know the kids will spend their time and money before, between and after the games in the restaurant and bar. My argument was that even though this might be true, I felt that the seniors would love to come to San Diego to play, thus leaving a good deal of money in the local economy. We envy the softball facilities that Phoenix has provided for their residents, seniors included.

Discussion: letting team in toc that finished 2nd so you can have more team in the bracket were there is only 2 teams.

I agree with Pete...I remember back in the 80's when USSSA would allow teams to "back in" to the State and National tournaments so there would be more teams. More teams equals more revenues. If a team finished first in a more than one tourney then the second place team earned a berth, etc., etc. Let's keep it as is.

How far is the classic spring training site from Lakeland? This looks like it would be a great time. I might try to get my airline tickets adjusted to make it. Hey Audie, I see that your going...take it easy on me if I end up going, OK? Mike Boatright - Doubleplay

Discussion: training camps

I don't think there are any training camps per se in Southern Cal but a lot of us work out together in the winter. You might want to put up a post with your area that you live in. If you're in the San Diego area you might contact EASY E (Eric from Doubleplay) on this message board. We work out on Sunday afternoons. Good luck.

Discussion: Flying with your softball equipment?

The padded golf bag works well, and you can also put a small chair and collapsable cooler in there as well. I started usung blueprint mailing tubes (you can get them at Staples, Office Depot, etc.). I cut them down to the length of my bats and insert them into the bat compartment of my bat bag. They not only protect my bats on flights but keep them from banging in to each other, and the bats fit perfectly in them.
