Topic: Tournaments
Discussion: Ring Touraments?

Ever since I started in senior softball there have been many different opinions on how to have teams play against teams of equal talent. There should be a better way for all the National Tournaments to have the same format. Maybe we should try and do something similar to the Huntsman’s games. They have 300 teams and do not seem to have the problems that the rest of the so called National RING TOURNAMENTS HAVE. There are 10 associations holding national championship at this time. They need to get together and form something like little league has done.

One thing that Huntsman’s games have going for them it is in the same place every year. Same format as Little League and college World Series.

So the10 associations would not lose money they would have to work together and form up to hold regional tournaments with the first 3 teams in each bracket would go to the true national World Series or world championship. There are more than 2.5 million active senior softball players and that number is growing as baby boomers come into the market. It would seem that if all of the associations would work together there would be plenty of money to go around. It is a joke that you win one of the tournaments and have to pay for the basic white lustrium ring. When I won my first ring in 1996 it was with out any chargers to the players.

Discussion: A.S.A NEW BAT TEST

If you want answer about what A.S.A. is doing about the composite bats. Call this man who is in charge of the testing of the new 98 MPH procedure in the university lab.
A.S.A. sent bats from four of the major bat manufacture that had already passed the 98MPH test. They were retested to make sure that they where still in compliance. I was not told how they were broken in. My guess is they where giving to there softball teams to be used in B.P. to break them in. Than retested after they where broken in. (The bats were purchased at retail sporting good stores)
I spoke with Dr. Smith in January of this year he would not tell me which bats where sent to him. He told me A.S.A. did not think composite bats would increase there performance after players hit with them. His comment to me was A.S.A. was not very realistic in this matter.

Discussion: Hownot to break in a bat

There are a lot of myths about the best way to break in a composite bat. It is impossible to do it with the various methods I have seen posted on this web site and others. I had the good fortune to go through the Miken factory years ago when Jeb and Pete Griffith owned the company. I could see then by the way the composite bats were constructed why they might break if not properly broken in.

I gathered over a dozen broken bats and had a company who makes products with the same carbon fiber Kevlar and fiberglass cut the bats apart to examine them and make a determination about the breakage. They had no way of knowing how the bats were broken in. Their conclusion, as some of you know, was that a bat must be turned 60 degrees after each hit to prolong the life of the bat.

I told them about all the different bat doctors who break in bats with vices and floor jacks and other machines. One bat doctor heats the bats and they said that would definitely weaken the bat. It is their professional opinion that it would be impossible to break the bat in evenly by the current methods people are using.

If you would like more information on this subject please email me at bobswarthout@hotmail.com or call 530-272-7024 I would be happy to share with you some of the bat testing that I am doing.
