Discussion: SLIDING!!

HJ--in response to yuor question I am the only one on my team that slides and I saw very few others do it---I would venture 10 percent or maybe less---there is a huge downside though--I have spent several hours since I got home removing the Georgia clay stains!!!! they are not easy to remove-----

Discussion: SLIDING!!

Gary "even remotely correctly" can cause major injury---sliding to closely to the bag can cause a broken ankle or a knee strain etc-- sliding on the wrong side of the bag can cause contact with infielder--a bag raised a little can cause knee or ankle injuries---I would say if a player especially a senior if they do not know how to slide can cause major injuries----base running is an art and takes lots of watching and thinking about situations---its the coaches job to watch the ball its the runners job to know where the fielders are---nothing about good base running/sliding can be remotely correct---

I agree Santo---I slide alot and have never been hurt doing it---I slide in order to avoid contact---a minor scrape is all I have ever incurred---

Discussion: SLIDING!!

I just returned from Dalton today and in seven games I probably slid 10 times--different slides for different bases and different situations---I am 66 years old an dfairly quick for my age--I will go in on my side or back or even head first and have never collided with the fielder and knock on wood haven't been called out when I slide--except once when I slid accidentally at home platein Columbus In this year--had a senior moment and forgot where I was --to my thinking running and sliding are a very important part of the game----I don't know about the rest of you but when I cross the chalk line I give it everything I have win or lose---

once again Gary you show your ignorance---anyone can--like you--knock a pasttime that is enjoyed by hundreds if not thousands---all of these men and women pay their money and participate and those with complaints voice them along with possible solutions--as I stated I gladly pay my money and PARTICIPATE in whatever tournament my team wishes to attend-----your "degree" I do not know if you even have one but allowing that you do--the degree did not give you the intelligence to offer solutions or the sensitivity to allow you to realize that no one cares for your constant negativity--

just did a little research---SSUSA lists 81 tournaments of which 8 contain the word National---slightly less than 10 percent---4 contain the word world----and then I reread the comments on this thread which is titled "what makes a senior bat" and once again Gary19 kidnaps the thread for his illogical point of view--plain and simple a relatively small number of tournaments are termed National hence this subject is not really important--besides the great one admittedly does not pay his money to play in them so the naming of such is really none of his business--I gladly pay my money to play despite whatever the name of the tournament---

not having a "masters" although I did manage to master kindergarten--oh wait I cannot lie kindergarten did not exist when I started school--anyway to my feeble mind Rastern or Western National chanmpionships mean the tournament is a National event to be held in either the East or the West with each being open to teams from the entire nation--whether teams from the west choose to enter the East version is up to their descretion and vice versa---also I believe if a team from Japan registered and then entered either tourney they would be accepted---so whats all the fuss about!!!!!! and sadly I measured and I am 45/35 not bad for my head and neck huh!!!!

guys there is much more than hitting to the game--take defense away and you have a 30 -30 tie after 6 innings--different players bring different things to a team and to be successful one part cannot be removed from the equation---Gary19 I am trying to find you a bra for that man boob problem!!!! will let you know if I find one---

Webbie I think it needs to go deeper than offense and or defense--what about a player that can raise a teams spirits with his demeanor--teams seem to play better when happy as compared to grumbling so I think a player with a light and airy nature is a plus--JMO

Discussion: Player Ratings

I notice that the comments on rating players seems to center on hits or on base percentage---we all know players that bat only--they utilize courtest runners and do not play the field as they cannot move--how do these players rate when compared to a player that may not hit as well but plays the field and runs for themselves and others???Or an outfielder that can run but cannot throw---which is better a guy that can run the ball down but cannot throw it or the guy with a cannon for an arm but the runner has already advanced a base or two by the time he gets to the ball?? just my thinking

we are still dancing all aroubd this issue.---the thread was started in an attempt to figure out ways to get MORE teams in all classification to go to tournaments---I attempted and apparently failed to make the point that so far this year in three tournaments we have played kentuckiana 65s 7 games In Shelbyville we played Indy Jobs 3 times and start off Lansing with them again--We had three teams in our division in Shelbyville and again three in Lansing counting a 70s Major---It is alot of money to go to tournaments and play the same teams over and over--some incentive needs to be found to get more teams period----Lets all try to come up with ideas to accomplish this before the game we love goes away due to non participation

Discussion: Tournament Prizes

My hat is off to you Ho you did your homework--I am with a 65 AA team and your research proves my point---look at the number of AA teams in each of the tournaments you mentioned. That is the problem --the number of entries is down--way down--so we as an organization need to figure out how to raise the numbers---at Shelbyville we played three different teams one we played once the other two three times each---now we are going to northern Championships and in our division is 2 65 AA one 70 Major and two 75 AAA---thats for seeding games and goes to the 70 major and two 65 aa for double elimination--we again will be playing the one team two or three times--perhaps I am wrong but the only way to get more teams is via prizes--I personally do not care because I love to play but would like more and different teams--
Ho on the major/major plus note you neglected that the numbers you posted show the same situation for 65AA--I have not seen one tournament say how many teams will be there until AFTER cancellation/refund time is past---perhaps all TD should guarantee X number of teams or money back---or make winning so good teams cannot pass up the opportunity---this is our problem and its kinda up to us to fix it--

Discussion: Tournament Prizes

Just finished the Hoosier Classic and today checked the pairings for Northern Nationals.
We played two different teams three times each in Shelbyville and actually start the seedings in Lansing against one of them. Our bracket in Lansing will have only three teams. It seems this problem crosses the lines from one organization to another--we pay several hundred dollars entrance fee and in reality get nothing in return except saying we played which in my opinion is ok-but we all really want to win against the best and have the best tournaments possible--what could make more teams want to attend--prize money--say you pay $500 to enter--what if the prize for winning was $1000--common sense tells me that more teams would enter meaning more money for the tournament and more money for the local economy and with the winnings a team could enter more tournaments---I believe SSUSA and SPA could initiate this and the associations would grow. Any other thoughts on this?? Just My Opinion

Discussion: I never dreamed it would be this hard to start playing again.

I played while in the army --that was in 1966---did not play again other than pitch to the kids in the yard until a church league in 2009--played in senior league half a year in 2010 and then played on travel team last year as well as a couple of leagues. I could not run from home to 1st the first year in church league and legs were always hurting. Last year for the first time ever I played the outfield and ran for many teammates. so at 64 I was acting like a child again and had a ball doing it--In my opinion Senior softball with all of its flaws is the best thing to come along for many of us.
