Discussion: Please Forgive My Naivete!

I love what all you guys are saying, however, my first goal is to win. It sure makes things a lot more fun. However, if you lose, leave the loss on the field and enjoy your teammates and friends. Every person on our team will tell you it is more fun when you win, but do not lose sight that we are all so fortunate to even play this great game. Have a great year in 2015!

? Our entire infield wear cups, face masks, and shin guards, plus knee pads. That does not mean you can not have a serious injury if a ball is hit solidly and you do not see it. The gear will only protect so much.

To all you who do not believe in safety-just see someone get hit and you will change your mind. You are right about "God made it that way" but he also told us to use "common sense." Men 40 to 80 play this GAME called Senior Softball and we would like to continue playing, but not under dangerous situations. That macho stuff left me long ago after seeing several injuries that could have been averted.

Omar, paul0784, Tommy has done several of our games in Nor Cal and you can not find a better one anywhere. He probably would not accept praise from any of us, but he knows that we know how good he does a each and every game.

Vinny, if you were playing the infield and could not see a ball coming at you, are you telling me that is no problem? Better safe than sorry!

Guys, I am not an umpire, but overall I think they do a real good job (some better than others). I do agree with garyheifner on one very important item. Make sure all umpires are enforcing the same rules.

I am real late with this post, but I would like to tell you what happen in our sun game. A ground ball was hit to my 2nd baseman, neither he, the umpire or the right centerfielder saw the ball. I asked all three if they saw the ball. All said the sun that was setting was right in their eyes. I then proceeded to call the opposing mgr out and told him and the home plate umpire we could not and would not continue under those dangerous conditions. The Hawaii mgr agreed (along with the umpires) and the game was delayed 25 minutes until the sun set. The game continued without incident.

Discussion: RE; NCSSA HOF event this week at BLD in Manteca

The tournament was well run, evenly matched teams, good umpires, but two things bothered me. The 7 AM games and the condition of the fields has gotten so bad that there was more rubber in the infield than turf. What can we do about these problems?

See your doctor before doing anything. He or she will recommend inserts. Wear them all the time, not just playing softball. I had plantar fas for 4 weeks before I saw my doctor at Kaiser. That was four years ago and I still wear inserts in all my shoes and limit my use of flip flops etc.

We played at the Sacramento Complex all three days. Conditions did not change. I am going to make a strong suggestion to our four teams not to play anymore SSUSA tournaments. Safety is supposed to be a concern. Yeah, right. You could not see the outfielders shoes the grass was so deep. The infield had so many rolls in it. It is almost an insult to all senior softball players who play. It is a shame, because we all love these tournament, otherwise we would not complain. It seems to fall on deaf ears.

Crusher, these are not major players just because they can hit one out once in a while. I have hit eight to ten out per year and I am a little guy, but certainly not a major player. Whatever happen to good defense, base running etc etc etc. Seems as though all that is talked about are homeruns. A major player to me is one that can hit for high average, play solid defense and make very few mental errors. What is your take on what a major player is?

What a bunch of cry babies!! We are a 65 AA team and we have four guys who can hit them out, but we are allowed to have ONE and then an OUT! Why allow hot bats, hot balls, and tournaments in higher elevations? It is pure torcher for those guys. So guys, we are the lowest division and yet we get ONE homerun only while all you guys complain about your three, nine, ten, and a zillion homeruns that you hit. Please!

We took fifteen players to the tournament and all enjoyed (including wives) playing teams we had never played against. All teams were competitive. Our umpires from Baltimore were terrific, the rest were not. Case in point- all players were to wear a wrist band or be called out when hitting. One opposing team did not wear them, pointed it out to the umpires, they were allowed to continue with no penalty (TD knew of this case). Why have the rule if not enforced? The fields at Shadow Rock were fair at best, but the worst thing was going thru some of these extremely bad areas to get to the ballpark. We will go back to St George next year.
This tournament was too long and too expensive.

taits, it is clear and will be around 65 today, very slight chance of rain Friday, but 60% on Sat. That tells you exactly nothing, but it looks like the tournament will probably get started. There is no rain expected Sunday. Tough call for people coming from a distance. Good Luck.
