Discussion: Hotels jacking prices for SSUSA tournaments

It was just brought to my attention that Hyatt House which is endorsed by SSUSA for the Tidewater Classic tournament in Virginia Beach is charging 20 dollars a night extra to park at their hotels....this basically eliminates any discounts that SSUSA negotiated for teams to stay there March 25-28 weekend for $109 per night...I figured with the $20 per night extra and taxes and fees, it would be closer to $150 per room night for guys to stay there....i know Hyatt says free parking on their main website but individually, this particular Hyatt adds on the Valet parking daily fee....has anyone else seen this yet???? and is this asking too much to eliminate this fee especially when it is out of season in that area

Discussion: COVID 19 PROTOCOLS

I went to a wedding last summer...they gave out wrist bands, red, yellow and green....RED meant stay away, no hugs no contact, stay away...YELLOW meant elbow bumps, talking at 6 feet and socially distancing themselves and GREEN meant no problems, come on in to meet me....it all boils down to common sense but one thing for sure, the rules are set just like traffic signals and we must follow to play...it's a privilege and not a right

i would be all over the Hokas if they made them waterproof with a larger selection in colors....otherwise, if you wear them in the outfield, they will be soaked in the first inning....also, they are very porous for ventilation and dusty fields will fill your shoes (personal experience) as I have worn Hokas on the field in BP....now they have their mission to accomplish

i have used boombah for the past 6 yrs and they work great for me...not wide but overall fit and comfort, support and traction are really good....i know a few yrs back they made some really weak shoes but the newer models are re-designed and upgraded a lot....it is a personal preference as always...i love Hoka's but never thought of using them for softball because of colors until someone above mentioned the Speedgoat...only thing is they aren't waterproof and that hurts for outfielders on early morning games

Discussion: Commit line abuse

I suppose the key to the above rule about dropping a ball intentionally is "the judgement of the umpire" just like infield fly rule or running out of the base line or interference or the height of a pitch.....is it the same as watching a ball spin into foul territory because you know you won't be able to make a play on the runners???....the offense has so many advantages over the defense, it seems like a if the defense can get an advantage on the other team because of lack of hustle, then too bad for the offense...if everybody runs, then it's a different story

BJ, i know it is against the rules to let a ball fall but i rarely see an umpire call it especially when the batter doesn't run out of the box.....there are ways around letting the ball fall without making it too obvious but if the guy doesn't run, shame on him

as to the other play at the line, if the defense gets a guy in the rundown, they can use the commitment line as the "new" base the guy has to run to...that way he can be tagged between third base and the commitment line

these are "heads up" plays in my book...kind of like when a fielder lets a pop-up hit the ground when he sees the batter doesn't run so it turns into a double play....it doesn't happen often but as usual, we find a way to screw up the umpire's heads by circumventing the rule.....the same way the fielder tricks the guy to go home , the runner can trick the fielder by touching the line at the last second to catch the fielder with an illegal tag....after it is done a few times, both teams and all teams learn and hopefully it is avoided in the future but until it is, somebody will steal a run and maybe they win the game in the end by being "crafty veterans" or "heads up players" or "skirters of the rules" kind of players

Discussion: 2021 Demarini senior bats

i have the Denny Crine....it has great performance HOWEVER, it has a crack in it with a little over 100 swings....that is the word on the streets about Demarini bats in general, great performance but don't use them for BP or only about 25 swings, then bag it until games.....takes the fun out of hitting it but that's the way they are made

Discussion: 3 and 1: Take the pitch or swing away?

Dbax, I thought the same thing until I got the Pocket radar that everyone seems to be using nowadays...i noticed that it would read 2 readings sometimes like 28 and 89....i did it a few more times and sometimes it just did the batted ball speed...then when the guy took a bad pitch, the radar said 28 again....i said nobody had swung the bat and I did it again...same reading....i threw it a little quicker and it said 34.....it wasn't a fastball but it would be a flat pitch in our game....i am just going by what I saw and I recently saw another video where a same type of measurement popped up on their unit....maybe someone can verify either way if their radar had similar outcomes

common misconception about softball being 5-10 mph pitch is wrong...based on Radar, a typical pitch from 50-58 feet is 25-30 mph....I know, I was surprised too but I confirmed it with 2 different radar units......but as to the original post, I say, hit your pitch and not the pitcher's pitch

Discussion: Since when???

Biggest difference is speed...especially in outfield...40s usually play a lot of 5 men infield and have guys who can cover all kinds of ground in OF...hitting is still the same but singles easily turn into doubles and so on....arm strength is also a big part...younger arms can keep guys to singles and throw guys out much more in younger leagues....it's just a faster game but they ill all catch up in the higher ages, then the cycle begins again when new 40s come into play

Discussion: Should I buy a new 'old' bat?

OZ, I think Alan has the best answers to this questions but I thought the bats were going to be grandfathered in...but seeing your dates, is 2023 how far they will be grandfathered....sounds like the early 2000s ASA bat re-certification that was a complete joke...hopefully USSSA doesn't screw themselves by losing teams that don't feel like buying new bats in 3 yrs...i know that sounds weird but some of the senior bats we use today are 3-5 yrs old and still doing fine

Discussion: Kicking the ball to a teammate legal?

i saw it happen in a pro baseball game and the guy was called out...i recently had a play where a ball was hit to 2B and the fielder grabbed the ball with his bare hand and tagged the bag with his glove...ump called him out which is correct on a force play but on a tag play, the ball has to be in the hand that tags the runner
