Discussion: You make the call part 643

Hi stick8-If the shortstop runs to third base or throws to third base for force out ,for third out ,the run would not score, In the case of a tag play,if the run scores before the tag,the run should count. Good question.

Hi Webbie25-You make a good point that the players are inexperienced. As stick8 says-this is a good reason to have two first bases.

Sorry-should be baseman, not basement.

I think the first basement who has his foot in the middle of the bag while taking a throw could be called for defensive interference. The batter/runner is entitled to step on first base. Some common sense should prevail,as the first baseman's foot on top of the bag is posing a risk of injury to both players.

The appeal would have been made after the play was over. The runner who left early would have been called out and the run would not count if I was the head umpire.

If an appeal was made and the umpire saw the play and ruled the runner on third left early, the runner is out, the inning was over and the resulting rundown was inconsequential and the run would not count.

Discussion: safety masks

We had a bad injury in our rec league. 50 and over age. One of our pitchers was hit in the face with a line drive. The mask he was wearing was plastic and shattered. He sustained cuts to his face (12 stitches) a broken orbital bone and a detached retina. He has lost vision in his left eye. I know some pitchers will not wear masks, and that is up to the individual player. But if you pitch and wear a mask make sure to get the best you can, whatever the cost. It seems like some of these plastic masks are unsafe. Stay safe and good luck to all.

Discussion: Lower Back Pain Home Remedies

I have found that Bio-freeze gel helps ease the pain. I would suggest wearing a back support when taking batting practice. If the pain persists, you might even open your stance a bit to take some strain off the back. Ibuprofin is good. I always carry some in my bag. Good luck.

Discussion: Combat Twilight bat users

A player on my team recently bought a Combat Twilight and another guy bought a Combat Ambush. Both are now back to using their Mikens. They are using the combats for BP. Mikens and Reeboks are the much preferred bats in my league. I wonder if the P413 will hit with them?

Discussion: Illegal bat

It sounds like your senior league uses single-wall bats only. If this is the case ,the bat would be illegal. It would be legal down here in Florida or in any state that allows double-wall or composite bats. If you play tournament ball , you can use it. I believe there are also some single-wall bats that are considered too hot for some senior leagues. That might also apply to your league. Hope this info helps. Good luck.

You can google Kelly sports and check the bat reviews and prices. I prefer the U2 max load. I find it outhits the Centenarian by about 25 feet off a batting tee. My second choice is the Melee legend. Good luck.

Discussion: NEED A GOOD UTRIP BAT

I use a Worth Mayhem U-Trip composite bat that is an excellent line drive bat. It has a 14' barrel and has been very durable, It is also approved by NSA and ISF and comes with a one year warranty.

Discussion: Talk regarding illegal bats

Hi Brett-We actually have a league where bats are provided. The visitors bat and then the bats are brought over to the home teams bat rack. These are the only bats allowed for the game. I call these bats Wal-Mart bats as they are cheap aluminum bats, and they put the emphasis on defense and safety. Since the outfielders play shallow, there are alot of gappers that go for inside-the-park home runs.

I have always used a rubber mallet on a new bat. I roll up a towel and lay the bat head on it and hit the barrel as hard as I can while rotating the bat. I will do this hundreds of times. This is supposed to loosen the bat up. I know that they sell a tool made of a hammer handle with a softball attached to pound the bat with also. Whether this works or not I have no idea, but it makes alot of noise in the garage.

Discussion: Swing analysis

Many hitters use the overlap grip to give themselves a longer bat and generate more bat speed. You can pull hard with your bottom hand and push with your top hand, but basicly your top hand is just along for the ride, and will come off the bat after contact.

Discussion: Bats

Bomani sports research DVD-Mark McDowell had his bat speed measured at 93.3 mph. Then he used a wiffle ball bat and swung it at 121 mph. He suggested that you could improve your bat speed if you used this technique regularly. I normally swing a 32 oz. bat and then a 34" broom stick when training, but I could use any suggestions to make more consistant solid contact at the plate.
