Discussion: HOME RUNS

What should the 65 yr old home run hitter do if there isn't a AAA or Major or Major + team in their area? Give up the game? We're all pretty well set in our ways and to try and change to a "singles" hitter when you're use to hitting HR's would be pretty hard to do, don't you think? I agree with the fact that HR hitters in the younger divisions should move up, but at 65? Come on, at least give them a single.

Discussion: New rule for the pitcher

Everyone who thinks we need more rules in softball needs to read the reply from "Pieman".
Hit by a batted ball and broke his leg and still thinks that hitting the middle is part of the game. I agree with his statement.
The more rules we have, the more it takes away from the game. I don't think there is a rule that says a pitcher "can't" wear shin garuds or some knid of a face shield so the option is there for the pitcher to take protective measures.
They need to leave the rules alone and figure out what can be done "within" the rules.

Discussion: 0K HOW ABOUT FREAK PLUS

umby44, you probably need to specify if your question is meant to be "in general" is it better or assoc. specific? As Walk says, it might be a little better then the Freak but not ASA approved but a check of the ASA website also shows that the Maniac 585 is "not" ASA approved as well. So I think you need to try and narrow you question a little to either "in general" or "assoc. specific" because there is a difference.

Discussion: ASA bat testing machine

I've always thought the Freak Plus and the Synergy 2 were pretty hot bats, but according to the figures you show here, they're actually pretty sad. That's "IF" the figures this guy got from the machine are correct and he ran the test properly. I can see where this is going to be a topic of "much" discussion.

Discussion: ASA bat testing machine

Could one of you guys please explain what these numbers mean and just exactly does this bat testing machine work?? Does it compress the bat and look for a figure in compression? Walk, you said that they didn't throw out bats if they fall "below" the 240 mark. I guess that means anything below 240 is "hotter" and anything above 240 is "not as hot", is this correct??
Thanks

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there. Although my Father doesn't read this website, I'd like to wish him a Happy Father's day. He was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 when it was attacked. He's alive today at 90 and doing great. I hope I've got his genes. I'm extremely proud of him and that's the reason why I stayed in the Air Force for 24 years.
God Bless you all.

Discussion: Best bat

I have to agree with softballer. I've seen the Easton Synergy 2 in action and I'm convinced that bat alone beat our team in a playoff game. The vast majority of their team used the synergy 2 and they were pounding the ball 20 or 30 feet over our outfielders heads for extra bases. Many of the players on my team mentioned how well they were hitting the ball. How do I know this? I played catcher and saw what bat each one of their guys used. I can't speak about the newer bats like Walk can but I believe the Synergy 2 is got to be among the top 3 if not even number 1. Plus, it's legal in all assocations.

Discussion: One Bat !!!??

You are right "softballer". Let me tell you the story. My team was playing softballer's team in the playoffs. Since I was playing catcher, I got to see what bat everyone was using. Guess what? At least 9 of their 11 batters used softballer's Synergy 2 bat and each one of them pounded the ball over our outfielders head for extra bases. Our shortstop even committed that these guys don't normally hit like that but since they were using the Syn 2, they hit great.
Playing catcher gave me the perfect position to watch each hit and hear and see how hard it was hit. I can honestly say, that I firmly believe that this "bat" beat our team. Everyone of their guys hit it hard and solid and I give them credit for that.
This is a great bat and as I said before, I just wish I could afford one, boo-hoo, poor me :-)))

Fred, a check of the ASA site shows the Synergy 2 (SCX22) as an approved bat on 10/21/2003. From what I've seen of this bat, it's a pretty damn hot. I just wish I could afford one, boo-hoo, poor me huh?? :-))

Discussion: Heart Attack..Wake Up Call

Gentlemen, I have got to add my two cents to your comments and very much like your comments, it could end up costing you your life. I was 53 when I was told I had prostate cancer and it was found on a "routine-yearly" exam/blood test. I had no indications what-so-ever that anything was wrong with me-nothing! I had laposcpic surgery on Jan. 7, 04 and was released on Jan. 9, 04 and walked 2.5 miles on Jan. 10, 04 and returned to playing softball on Feb. 7, 04 exactly one month after my surgery.
So, as jax21 says, "WAKE UP" and get these tests done because as it was in my case, "early detection" is the key to defeating these problems. If you wait, these problems will grow and then "they" will win in the long run. Trust me, you don't want them to win, get checked and be sure.

jimmyp, are you looking to play "league" seniors or "tournament" seniors? Either way, why don't you email me at cmitchell@surewest.net and I'll give you some contacts for either one.

To Fred Scerra, I watched one of our players get hit with a ball so hard in the face that it knocked him out and when he fell, he broke one of his ankles. He was in the hospital for a week or two and rehab after that.
The only difference between the injuries you referred to and the one I'm talking about here is that in this case, the ball was "thrown" by the shortstop to second base and he accidently hit our player in the face.
Does this mean we should ban shortstops???

Discussion: Rolling for distance

After reading all of the comments here, it sounds like it's relatively easy to roll, vice or otherwies alter a bat. It also sounds like it's relatively hard to detect if this has been done to a bat.
If you put these two thoughts together, I think I can see the "handwritting on the wall". It won't be long before all assocations make "any" kind of bat illegal except for wooden bats. I think a wooden bat would be a lot harder to "alter". I don't think rolling or vicing a wooden bat would do any good so it sounds like that would alievate the problem by going to wooden bats only. I guess my point is, we need to police our own teams, leagues, orgainations or whatever, otherwise the "big" boys will and we probably won't like their outcome, maybe even wooden bats. Think about it guys, let's keep things legal and above board and play your very best in every game and no matter what the outcome of the game, you'll know you gave it your very best and did it legally.
Keep the faith.

Discussion: Platooning

If platooning were allowed, don't you think it would be possible to "severely" stack a team both offensively and defensively? It wouldn't be any fun to play a game where every batter hits it over the fence. If that's the case, you could leave the defensive team in the dugout to rest, then when a "regular" batter comes to the plate, go play defense. Why even go out in the hot sun to stand there and watch balls fly over your head out of the park?

I've got an even better idea. Leave the damn game alone and play it the way it's suppose to be. If you get hurt, too bad, we've all been hurt before, get over it. We're old enough now to know what we can and what we can't do, what position to play, where to play that position, pace ourselves. Look, just play the game and forget all these "brillant" ideas.

Discussion: SSWC Worlds in Las Vegas:

Can you imagine setting up over 1200 games in 11 days, dealing with 322 teams, lights going out on some fields, sprinklers coming on during games, vendors not being there, your cell phone ringing from people with questions, dealing with emergencies and much much more, PLUS playing in 6 of those games with us, Sacramento Saints, can you imagine? Terry did all of that as well as ran for many of our players, like myself, who were hurt. He was always the first one out of the dugout to run for somebody. He put 100% into our games and I'm sure he gave more than 100% for the entire tourney. My hat's off to this man becasue he sure deserves it. If you have a complaint, just stop for a moment and think about what I mentioned above and then ask yourself, could you do that? I think it's unfair to expect a tourney of this size to come off without a hitch.
Terry, thanks again for your efforts in everything espeically when playing with us.
Good Luck,
Mitch

I'll try to help you out a little more. Softballer plays here in Sacramento for the Crew and on Wed. nights in the Golden Seniors league at the complex. As for his knee, I was talking to him about that this past Wed. night and he said it's doing pretty good. He was playing left center field and looked like he was moving pretty good to me. He was also running the bases pretty good, when they "did" pitch to him. He gets walked a lot cause the other teams don't like it when he goes "yard" on them. I could give you his name, but I think I'll let him do that. Was this any help??
