Discussion: New Senior League in Hickory NC

Here is a great new opportunity for teams in NC, Northern SC, Southern VA, and East Tennessee.

I would like to encourage you to consider the Hickory Senior Softball League, being formed by Hickory Parks and Rec. Dept.. Hickory has 3 beautiful fields located at Stamford Park right in the better part of Hickory near the Armory, and very easy to get to via I-40, US 321, or I 77 from north, south, east, or west. The fields are well maintained, and have lush green grass in the outfield, that is watered regularly. These fields are equal to the better tournament fields that you might play on. This league was formed not to be in competition with the other senior league in our area, CSSL, or major tournaments around the country. Dates will be scheduled off these dates. It was designed to give seniors another option to play softball on free weekends. It is a 55 up league. The cost is $800 for 8 Saturdays, 3 games per Saturday, beginning in April. Games start at 10 AM and the last games begin at 2 PM, so no long days. There is another great benefit. These fields are 300 ft, and Hickory plans to allow senior bats, so this totally negates illegal shaved bats. No hitter will have an advantage, plus nets will be used to protect pitchers. Most of you know Bud Whitener, and know of his knowledge and skill at senior softball. His knowledge and input was utilized by the Hickory Rec. team to put this together. It was done by a very good softball player for the benefit of other senior softball players! This league is a real opportunity for seniors, and we should support the Hickory Rec. Dept.! Hickory wants 8 senior teams to begin this league. Please call immediately because the 8 spots go to the first 8 teams. Gary Long is the contact at Hickory Rec.. Call him for all the details. His contact information is:

Hickory, NC 28601
Phone: 828-261-2252 Fax 828-323-1042

I am sure Gary is willing to have a meeting of coaches, or maybe even do a webinar so that all can ask questions and have input without driving anywhere. I know it is cold, and we are not playing ball, but all of this has to be put together now to make it happen. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Thanks for your consideration!

Discussion: Look to join tournament team for 2017

I live north of Charlotte NC, and play on a Charlotte Senior Sports weekend team. I am looking for a tournament team for a few tournaments in 2017. I am 61. I prefer outfield, but also can play 2nd base, or catch. I have been playing Church League and Open League ball for 5 years against guys age 18 up, mostly 20's and 30's that are very strong, so I would not be afraid to play on a 55 up team. My greatest asset is speed, and good base running instincts. I run for myself always, plus I almost always am called upon to do base running for slow guys, which allows teams to maximize run production. This is double duty, but my legs have thus far been good enough to do both. I don't train, but I ran in the Senior games last year, and ran a 50 meter dash (55 yards)in 7.38 seconds. I cover 2nd to home in under 7 seconds, and can score from 1st on balls hit in the outfield gaps. The speed also lets me reach outfield balls that others can't reach. I have new lenses in both eyes, and now see better than ever.

Important: I am a team player! I don't like mouthy or selfish players. Teams win games, not individual players. I believe in doing my talking on the field, and rarely do much talking anywhere else. The only stat that matters to me is if our team scores more runs than the other team. This is what i always work toward.

I play already about 60 games a year, but i could play about 4 tournaments. It could be AA, AAA, or whatever, depending on the opportunity. If you are interested, call me at 828-308-5574.

Thanks,

Tim

Discussion: Looking for a team

I am looking for a team in the Charlotte NC league. I am age 59 and a half. I have been playing in a church league for 4 years against mostly age 16 through age 45 individuals, and I hold my own. Good legs with speed and good base running instincts, disciplined at plate, with about a .600 OBP against the youngsters. Hitting lead-off for the team for 3 years, and the youngsters have not been able to do better and move me out of the lead-off spot. Can play second, catch, first, or possibly pitch. I coached our team last year and through a lot of BP.
