Discussion: Why so few AA teams

It is my understanding that all teams when new are rated AAA. So in order to become a AA team, you must have shown, in at least three tournaments, your inability to compete at the AAA level. You have had to take your lumps so to say in order to play AA. Funny though that there are very few AA teams at 50 or 55 in the northeast or mid-atlantic perhaps because most tournament teams are very competative.

Discussion: USSSA Glen Burnie, Md.

Tried to contact Bob Holland numberous times since Ocean City tourney on Labor Day. Finally got the skinny. It is a standard USSSA tournament just with age restrictions. Usual pitching antics and low arc are the norm. None of the senior rules you have come to be familiar with will be used. I think Bob is out of touch with the senior game as we know it. In spite of both Glen Burnie Md and Cape May NJ being the same distance from our area, we will choose Cape May that weekend just because we would prefer to use senior equipment and get a good look at our new guys using it.

Discussion: New player in town as it were.

The ISSA is based out of Manassas VA. run by R.B. Thomas and his family. Events are usually run smoothly but the format is only two play-in games and then double elimination for about the same money as SPA and SSWC. They are associated with the ISF and RB holds a tournament in VA in June for the International Title. They were staunch ASA supporters of ASA and its equipment for years although RB was instrumental in getting ASA to legalize senior bats after he was the next to last Ass'n to do sobecause the teams stopped coming to his events. They are making a strong push to try to dominate the southeast with few marketing incentives like play three get the fourth free...and have made inroads into PA and OH. They do use the best ball in Senior Softball today, the A>D Starr Tattoo which is exactly like the original Trump Evil ballfrom 2008-09. They need is playing in 100% humidity and 100 Degree temps in the SE in June thru September. Hope that clears it up.

Discussion: new ASA rules

Senior bats for the Senior(50+)divisions have not yet been approved for ASA. There is a code change that has to be voted on and approved at the ASA National Convention next week and needs to be approved by a majority of voting members before that happens. One of the biggest supporters now of the proposal is RB Thomas from the ISF/ISSA, an allied partner with ASA. In the ASA family, many opinions surrounding senior bats have changed significantly over the past three years, including his, when players stopped supporting the tournaments with ASA bats. It will be a battle between those who think ASA sets the standard for the game as a whole and those who want to promote the senior game...The outcome of the vote is up in the air for sure since the senior program is but a tiny part of ASA as a whole. Hope this clears it up.

Discussion: rec tourney's email

In texas, there must be alot of tournaments. In the Northeast, season is mush shorter. Begins May 1. Tournaments up here are $275.00 to $300.00 for double elimination. We offer teams a five game guarantee. Each game requires an umpire or two, balls, scorecards, labor to groom and line the fields. SSWC only makes up in registering teams to compete so covered by insurance...I wish I lived in Texas so I could get out of the cages and play but you play the cards you're dealt when you live in a cold climate.

Discussion: rec tourney's email

because there are so many qualifiers already, rec tournaments serve to play the game without stretching the SSUSA staff to cover them. They also work to get teams not already involved the chance to play locally and find out what the game is all about. As for fees, How about insurance as just one part if it...Then there is field cost, balls, umpires, sanction fees for those not registered and probably finding a place to have the pre tournament meetings...Do you also think that people shoild hold these tournaments just to break even? It is hard to imagine the scenario that each event brings to the table just to get it off the ground...We should support these tournaments because they support our game...
