Discussion: OHIO SSWC QUALIFIER

Terry McClaskey, SSUSA Great Lakes Regional Director, launched a new SSWC Qualifier in Beavercreek, OH this past weekend. Beavercreek is a suburb of Dayton. The tournament was held at the beautiful Rotary Park Softball Complex, a facility with a lot of character and which is in a bucolic setting, a valley formed by Beaver creek. Although small in numbers this first year tournament provided some great games and competition and plants the seed for future years. SSUSA expects this tournament to grow into one of their premier events in the Great Lakes area.

Congratulations go out to Terry McClaskey for his efforts in establishing a successful first year event. There were three divisions in the tournament and here are the top two finishers in each division:

70/75 GOLD DIVISION
1. Pfeiffer Gray Sox, MI
2. Kaiser Permanente North Coast Softball, OH

65 AAA DIVISION
1. Indiana Legends / Columbus
2. Rochester Classics, NY

50/55/60 GOLD DIVISION
1. CBC Legends, OH
2. DeClaire Insurance Softball, OH

Discussion: Would like to play in the Minneapolis area this summer

mtboxes,

My e-mail address is stnlsimmons@aol.com. Please e-mail me with your personal information (age, past skill level, where you will be living in the Minneapolis area) and I will be able to provide you with information on where you can play in senior leagues in the Twin Cities (the East Metro league or the West Metro league) and which tournament teams might be a fit with the contact information for their respective managers.

Discussion: CHATTANOOGA, TN SSWC QUALIFIER

JohnBob,

I wasn't involved with the scheduling so I can only guess at the answer but I'm thinking it had 1.) to do with available dates at the complex and 2.) wanting to avoid conflicts with other senior tournaments in the Southeast region at this time of year. You will be pleased to hear that SSUSA has already started making inquiries about reserving this same complex at a later date (perhaps late April or early May) in 2012.

Discussion: CHATTANOOGA, TN SSWC QUALIFIER

I would like to thank the softball teams who took part in the first ever Tennessee SSWC Qualifier in Chattanooga this past weekend; the staff of the "Summit of Softball" complex in Chattanooga where the tournament was played; and the umpires who worked the event. The tournament contended with some miserable weather conditions (rain on Saturday and temperatures in the 30's on Sunday) but the teams persevered, the staff at the complex kept the fields playable and gave the teams the opportunity to play a full complement of games over the two days and the two umpires (Bill Bagley of NC and Aristotle Huffman of TN) were out in that weather for every pitch and they both did an excellent job.

This complex is an outstanding facility and they have a staff to match. This tournament has the potential to grow into a large SSWC Qualifier in future years.

Hats off go to Dale McWhorter, SSUSA Southeast Regional Director, who helped launch the tournament. Congratulations also go to DT Express of Calhoun, GA who won the 50/55 Gold Division and to Huffman Electric of Carolton, GA who won the 60/65 AAA Division.

Discussion: TOC Updates

Bruce,

The Wild Bunch (AL) lost the 60 Major winners bracket finals game to Minnesota Masters 60's - White. MN Masters scored three in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 22-21. The Wild Bunch then lost the losers bracket finals to Minnesota Prize 65's when MN Prize scored once in the bottom of the seventh to win 26-25. That was the third bottom of the seventh win for MN Prize on Sunday as they earlier beat LL Roofing (FL) 18-17 (their third win over LL in the tournament) and then beat Budwesier (FL) 27-26. The 60 Major finals was an all Minnesota event with the MN Masters 60's beating the MN Prize 65's 26-16 to win the title.

NOTE: The MN Prize 65's qualified for the 2011 TOC in 2009 when they were still a 60+ team. They began competing as a 65+ team in 2010 but had to play in the TOC in the division in which they qualified (60 Major).

Discussion: Ridge Hooks has been hospitalized

As of today, January 10, this is the latest posted on the SPA web site regarding Ridge's condition, "Ridge is doing very well. He has been in the office conducting meetings the last few days and has added 10 new tournaments to the SPA's tournament schedule."

Sounds like the Ridge we all know and appreciate.

Discussion: Ridge Hooks has been hospitalized

For those of you who know Ridge Hooks, SPA executive director, I have just been informed by Don Ward of North Carolina, one of Ridge's SPA directors, that Ridge has suffered a series of mini strokes. Ridge has been hospitalized in Oklahoma. That is all the information I have at this time.

Ridge on many occasions has comforted a fellow senior player with a word of prayer. I know, he took me aside during a rough spot in my life and shared a prayer with me. It helped. Now is the time for all of us to share a prayer with Ridge.

Discussion: Question 4 Major Plus teams??

Andy,

It was a joy playing your team in Phoenix and it was a special occasion for me facing one of your teammates, Carlos Beccera. Carlos and I were both on the original National Advisory Board during the second Senior Summit. I consider Carlos a good friend and that is the first time in 10 years that we have played against each other.

We (the MN Prize 60's) played about as well as we can before being edged in bracket play by Master Collision 20-18 and then being eliminated by the KC Kids 33-32 in extra innings. Our hats are off to you for an outstanding championship in Phoenix and for defeating those two outstanding teams enroute to your victory.

I am really happy to hear you have decided to stay together as a team. We really admired your group, both as outstanding individuals and as a very competitive team.

For whatever it's worth I hold a SSWC qualifier in Minnesota in June and this past year had the good fortune of having four teams in the 60 Major / Major+ division. The four were Ricker's, KC Kids, MN Prize 60's and MN Masters 60's-White. That tournament will be held on June 11-12 in 2011 in Rochester, MN. I again expect that many 60 Major / Major+ teams to attend and extend an invitation for you to join us. I understand your travel budget may not allow you to participate but, if it is a possibility, the door will always be open.

Have a great 2011 season,
Steve Simmons - SSUSA National Director

Games will be played to SSUSA rules with one exception, the time limit. All games, except championship games, will be played to a 55 minute time limit, followed by the open inning. Championship games will be played to completion.

Discussion: BRICKYARD RESULTS

TO Brickyard teams,

I will be happy to provide the game scores if you are interested. Please e-mail me a request and I will e-mail you the results. It will be on an excel spread sheet attachment.

Regarding the schedule, I worked on that based on the frame work provided to me by the tournament director, Tim Fishburn. Instructions were to make it a round robin event guaranteeing teams a minimum of five games apiece. There were also numerous requests for early starts, late starts and early departures. All the formal requests were honored.

The tournament entry deadline was Wednesday, April 28 and this is when the schedule was posted. Following that deadline a team dropped out, a late entry was included and a team had to be moved to a different division because of a change in their rating. This necessitated two revisions, one posted on Thursday, April 29 and another posted on Friday, April 30.

All other schedule revisions were handled at the tournament site. If the teams would like to see the tournament dates moved and / or the schedule format changed that request would need to be addressed to Tim Fishburn.

Please feel free to e-mail me directly with any questions you might have. I will do my best to answer your questions or direct you to the individual who can best answer that question.

My e-mail address is stnlsimmons@aol.com.

I enjoyed meeting all of you this past weekend,

JC,

The divisional winners were based on the records they compiled within their respective divisions, if there was no playoff involved. The 55/60 Silver division consisted of five teams, two 55 AA teams and three 60 AAA teams. The Chicago Classic Bobcats were 4 & 0 within that division, including a 17-15 win over the Blue Chips 55's. The Dayton Legends 55's were 3 & 1 within that division, including a 17-16 head-to-head loss to the Chicago Classic Bobcats.

Discussion: BRICKYARD INVITATIONAL 2010 • DRAFT Game Schedules & Brackets

TO Brickyard Invitational Trn Teams,

One other rule that will be utilized at this tournament, that is an exception to the SSUSA rules, is the flip-flop rule. The flip-flop rule will be used in the final inning if the visiting team is ahead by more than five runs.

It was brought to my attention that when scheduling the one cross over game for each of the 55/60 Silver and 60 AA teams, when they play each other, I paired both Blue Chips teams together and I paired both Dayton Legends teams together. The schedule at the tournament site will show different pairings. This will affect the Sunday schedule for all teams in the Gold bracket. All Gold bracket teams need to follow the Sunday schedule posted at the tournament site.
