| Sept. 7, 2011 MTM | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Cape May Tournament Motels The Avalon hotels are about 4 miles from the Avalon fields. They are about 8 miles from the Goshen sports complex fields in Cape May Court House. The Cape May motel is about 20 miles from the Avalon fields and about 14 miles to the Goshen sports complex in Cape May Court House. The Concord rates are probably the lowest for the Avalon area. | Sept. 28, 2009 MTM | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 11th Defensive Player Time to re-visit adding the 11th defensive player. I played in and watched many games during the North East Championships this past weekend in Cape May. I saw an awful lot of balls hit up the middle in spite of the PPR and warnings at the pre tournament meetings about hitting up the middle. I know of at least two pitchers being hit with one having to go to the hospital for x-rays. (Thankfully just a badly bruised forearm) I need someone to tell me the reasons why there should not be an additional defensive player. I heard that one prevailing reason is players want to play the game like they used to or something to that effect. Let’s see. Play the game like we used to!!!!!!! 1. Five runs per inning. 2. Extra first base. 3. Extra home plate. 4. Commitment line. 5. No sliding at home plate. 6. No sliding at first base. 7. Then we have the PPR that most people seem to hate and it seems hard for umps to interpret. It is time for all the Senior Softball Organizations to just add the 11th defensive player in the best interest of senior softball. |
| Sept. 18, 2009 MTM | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: North East Championships From a Cape May native. The Davies sports complex is multi purpose as many communitiy recreation complexes are. Some of the fields are designed for little league baseball, little league softball, adult softball, youth soccer, and youth football. So permanent fences are out on some of the fields. There are two softball fields with dugouts and two without. The complex also contains a fenced little league field, a fenced adult baseball field, a skateboard /bicycle park, a street hockey rink, a snack stand, and the community recreation center. The complex is located about two miles from town where you will find shopping centers, fast food and other restaurants and a tavern. Located about a mile away is the free Cape May County Park and Zoo the gem of NJ zoos and you are only a few miles from some of the finest beaches anywhere. The infields might not be the best but the complex and area is definitely different than the Lower Allen/ Harrisburg area. The 60 teams will be playing in Avalon NJ. Avalon NJ is one of the finest seashore towns along the entire NJ coast. If the wind is blowing off the ocean( out to left field) bombers are going to love it. It is a two field multi purpose complex with portable fences and dugouts built about 10 years ago. Resturants and taverns are nearby. SSUSA staff has a list of motels. Not all motels are open as the season is winding down but it is still busy as it is a beautiful time of the year at the Jersey Shore with many events still going on. North Wildwood has their unbelievable Irish week end 9-24-thru 9-27. Good luck to all and prey for no rain. |

If I am wrong I apologize but you should get your facts straight before you make a statement like your ending sentence in your post. I played in the 65 AA division for Cash for College. I don’t believe that 2 teams in 65 Major, 4 teams in 65 AAA and 3 teams in 65 AA really represents a true test of any teams ability, but you play the teams present in the tournament. Yes we did get moved from AAA to AA but it wasn’t one bad tournament. We started the year in AA and were AA the year before and did not win anything the year before. We went to York Pa this year and won our division beating a couple of Major teams in round robin but they had to give us 10 runs per game. We won the if game with the AA team in the finals. We went to a Ct tournament were the same AA team beat us by 17 runs and the other teams which were AAA, merced us in every game. We got moved to AAA but the Ct team stayed AA. We played in 3 more tournaments losing every game against the AAA teams. ( 0-11 giving up 205 runs and scoring 102 ) We were the perfect example of what a lot of teams are complaining about getting rerated with no justification. We also were the perfect example of appealing and providing all facts and documentation to prove it was wrong. In the Eastern Nationals we were 3 and 3 scoring 97 runs (5 coming from the AAA team) and giving up 87. Why did we win? We were lucky. One of the other team’s best hitter had a bad knee and couldn’t play. The 13th and actual winning run came because their out fielder thought 5 runs had scored and walked after a ball as our runner scored from 1st base. We won 13 -12. We were the home team so maybe we would have scored in the 7th but you never know. There never was any justification for moving us to AAA and the Eastern Nationals prove we are where we belong. |
| July 14, 2008 MTM | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: AA Home Run Power Was this a SSUSA Tournament? I don't understand the HR problem. I thought AA was one and then an out. I thought that AAA was one and then a single and runners only advance if forced to. With no one on base and you have exceed the Hr count whatever it is you could hit 8 HR's in a row and still only score 5 runs. I don't think the HR is the problem I think the AAA teams resent giving AA teams 5 runs. Most important of all if the rating organizations really wanted to control the HR they would make all balls over the fence an out for AA and AAA. I would bet that most player that could hit the ball out on a consistent basis would not be on AA or AAA teams under those conditions. |

I played on a major team two years ago in a tournament where they combined the major and major plus teams in one bracket. We beat a major plus team in bracket play with a score of 14-13. We played them in the elimination round and they were beating us so bad we stopped the game. So all I'am saying is no matter how good you play defensively you still have to outhit the other team. |

Where your runs scored on errors or where they scored on hits? maybe your team is a better hitting team then the other team and maybe they didn't belong in the major or major + bracket. A true major or major plus team can hit a lot of home runs. A true triple or double a team should not be able to hit a lot of balls over the fence. If they are hitting the way they are supposed to hit you will have to score a lot of runs to beat them. You may make a lot of nice defensive plays but you will still have to hit to beat them. It takes 21 outs (provided you can play 7 innings, ha ha in a tournament) and they don't have to be good defenisve plays to end a game. If you don't hit you won't win. |

The scores don't show much defense. Slowpitch was designed to be a hitters game. You bat 500 in a slowpitch tournament and you are not considered a good hitter. Bat 500 in a fastpitch tournament and you are considered a very good hitter. So I guess it all comes down to what one considers good defense. |
| March 22, 2008 MTM | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: oppinion senior game hitting or fielding Hitters game. Just look at the scores. Even with 5 run innings they generally are high. Also as you get older you tend to lose defensive skills because your speed, sight and reflexes go but you can still hit. Watch a 60 + game and you will see that most of the time if a ball is hit directly over a fielders head they rarely catch it. Hit it in the gap they will get to it more often then over there head. When younger with the above lacking attributes it didn't matter where it was hit. |

| Dec. 11, 2007 MTM | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: IT APPEARS THAT SOME SENIORS HAVE NO RULES. There seems to be a lot of controversy about what level a team is or is not. I don’t know of very many players who would want to play but not be able to win. So saying you should play in a higher division and be completive but not being able to win the big one is okay is a bunch of baloney. As long as you keep score and/or playing for a title it is not just for fun. You want fun don’t keep score. I have played way before there were any team ratings and it wasnot fun to be rushed by super teams. I don’t mind losing to a team that is your equal but losing to a team that you should not even being playing is hard to take. I believe in team classifications. In any level below major any ball hit out of the park should be an out period. No one and then an out. Home run hitters would not play where they would be out if they hit a ball out. Also the associations that run tournaments should review the scores from the various divisions and tournaments during the year. Any team that is crushing other teams all the time should be evaluated and possibly be moved to a higher division. |

Don’t know what happens if you play in the Nov tournament for the next year teams roster. I wrote to the SSWC last year about starting the year in Major div and then going down to AA or AAA if I didn’t ike the team or playing in the Major div. Their reply was: You can never go down to AA from Major and you would have to get permission from the SSWC to play AAA which they probably would not approve of, and you could only change once. Yet you can move freely between AAA divisions and you can move from Major Plus to Major. Go figure. |

You disband for a year. Keep four players from your old team with a new name. Then next year you pick up all your players and start over. It’s not pretty but this seems to be the way to go with all the shenanigans going on in senior softball. |

It's the team that has to move up if more then a stated amount of players stay on the team which differs with each rating organization. If you can find a lessor team to play with you can do it. Each year is a different year unless you are on the impact player list (if it exists). |
