Discussion: Arizona Scorpions Senior Softball Club – Steve Hilby #24

It is with a heavy heart that we inform our softball community that we have lost a wonderful teammate, Steve Hilby. Steve succumbed to Covid 19, Friday night, Oct 22, 2021.

Steve was integral part to the success of the Scorpion Softball club. His versatility, consistency as a player, and commitment to team made him invaluable teammate. He was asked to play shortstop on more than one occasion; he was so smooth, you failed to notice he was left-handed. Whether running for another teammate or hitting in the clutch, Steve was always up to the challenge. Apart from his athletic endeavors, Steve was a loving husband, respected educator, teacher, coach, and mentor.

If you wanted to know where the Scorpions were in the park, you only had to look for Cindy and Steve. Cindy, hands down the best scorekeeper around plus being the keeper of the cookies and Steve with the wagon containing chair, umbrella, blankets, scorebook, score flipchart, and said cookies. The consummate power couple.

Details concerning Steve’s celebration of life will be forthcoming.

Maybe if you had not been hitting from 2nd base there would not have been an issue.

If there is a committee being formed I would like to be a part of same. 20+ years playing Senior Softball and there has always been haves and have nots.

The M+ division issues are self created. I have played M+ for 3/4 of my career and would still be playing it I was more talented and not fat.

It is a manager's job to create the best team possible based on their vision and expertise. If a team was only allowed players from within the state or state adjacent, the talent pool is reduced. SSUSA does a decent job in leveling the playing field, but the elite should not complain at being elite. The Jamaican bobsled team may be the worst in the Olympics but they are better than 99% of the world. Thus the M+ division is eating itself so to speak.

Of the 800-1100 softball teams in the country, there are probably relatively few sponsored. My less than scientific guess is; 5% receive tournament fees, another 4% fees and uniforms and 20-30 teams all divisions both plus some other type of compensation.

The teams that are blessed to have some type of sponsorship will naturally have a better chance of obtaining the best talent. Those teams that are "on paper" better than others should not gripe when they have no one to play.

This is the senior division, age begets injuries, retirement reduces disposable income, and overall talent pool is reduced.

Discussion: Player Renewall

I renewed via call to office. Received my digital card within minutes. I am hoping that since I renewed for 5 years as a 70 year old also I was glad it was issued as valid through 2026 and not expiring. Don't need that kind of stress.

Thank you to Rick, his crew, the umpires and especially the Prescott Parks group who made the Friday session playable and enjoyable. The weather is never easy to deal with, but they made the best of a difficult situation. In the 65s I know Bucky's and Scorpions won, other than that IDK. We had stotes, no issues with the ball.

Left hip replacement in 2007, Right knee replacement in 2016. Played softball 90 days after each. As detailed by Bogie, if you investigate your surgery options, listen to your body and physical therapist, no reason quality of life can return. Never was fast, but neither is a glacier, just be relentless and live life to its fullest. Look forward to seeing you on the field.

Discussion: LVSSA

Just to be clear, I do not know if it makes $en$e for the $plit, but more importantly I don't care. Organizations can merge and split as they deem necessary. It is the board members of the respective groups that determine direction. I just don't care to see the why(s) in a public forum, if the forum cannot affect change. We players can only participate or not in the result, we cannot cause or stop the process.

Discussion: LVSSA

I have no dawg in this fight and have played in multiple LVSSA and SSUSA events over the past 20+ years. Divorce is never pleasant, “who gets the stuff, who gets the kids, who gets the friends.” My take on the situation is more is better. If LVSSA thinks it can improve its position for the organization and its members, go for it. The more organizations and events “might” bring down the cost of the product (tourneys) overall or it may not. Options are options and I have friends associated with both organizations, same with SPA and ISSA. Either way airing issues publicly is not beneficial to anyone. If one organization has a legal complaint, we have systems in place to litigate same. If one organization is a better marketer (?) or negotiator then that will be demonstrated in more attractive dates and attendance. If the product is not up to par due to experience or lack there of, that will be demonstrated by comments and or resulting attendance. Please everyone take a breath and let the free market work. Stay safe and “Play Ball”.
