| Feb. 11, 2009 SouthernLeather | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Bad idea by SSUSA Spring Nationals in Florida has the same thing....one rate if you use a tournament hotel, another if you don't. About $150 difference. Terrible idea... You are asking coaches to stick their guys for an extra $20-25 a piece per night to reduce their team entry fee? to stay at a tournament hotel! How does that happen, easy...everywhere we go, we beat the tournament rate at hotels by using priceline. Example> $69 plus task for tournament hotel xyz or $45 plus tax for a Sheraton, Hyatt, or Hilton using priceline? Easy choice for us, we are poor....sometimes we actually stay at a tournament hotel, but always at a much lower rate...even than the negotiated rate by Senior Softball.... Wake up guys...what the hotels are telling you is that they will charge your customers more and tell you it is a discount, yet allow others to stay at the same hotel for a substantially lower rate than your supposed discount.. Bad idea.... |

Turpentine.....put a reasonable layer of turpentine on the knee after playing then put an Ace bandage on for a day.... It sucks the soreness and pain right out..... |

You want it to be good, heck it's Vegas....but that tournament just sucks the money and doesn't show any desire to the participating teams to get better. It is by far the worst representation of a National tournament I have ever seen in 30+ years.... And I really hate to say that cause any reason to go to Vegas is a good reason....but, it is what it is... |

I heard that there was a strong possibility that the distance from the plate to the pitcher's mound was under discussion to be increased in length next year....and possibly there would be a heighth limitation change. Any truth or info from the group? Or strictly some chatter.... Thanks, appreciate it. |

Stoneman, Thanks for the info, it had been a while since I remembered reading that piece....thanks for putting it out there again. I can tell you this, we just played in a one-pitch tourney because of weather....One-pitch will definitely make the pitcher more vulnerable as you tend to concentrate on just nutting it and don't quite have the time to get back as far as normal... Speaking of nutting it, I am glad to have mine in tact after taking a couple of low top-spin line drives back up the middle... And you are right, the guys in Jax FL only like the wood bats for one thing.....shaving off little pieces to start the fire for the barbeque! |

Experienced a problem with an ASA tournament umpire, and I don't know the answer. Pitching and threw a 3-2 pitch that the batter fouled off (2nd foul) for the 3rd strike. The batter complained to the umpire that the pitch was illegal (too high) and they were probably right. But the umpire did not verbally declare the pitch as "illegal", so the batter had to swing. The ump said yes it would have been ball 4 and that the ump had no responsibility to verbally declare it an illegal pitch. Although it worked out for me, I think the batter is right, the ump should have verbally declared the pitch illegal prior to it reaching the plate. I can't find my softcopy of the ASA rules (only a 2005 copy). Has something changed or does the umpire still have the responsiblity to verbally notify the batter of an illegal pitch? Thanks in advance.... |

It was by far the worst National tournament experience I ever saw .... Problems with umps not knowing the rules, 1 ump for a National Tournament, lights or lack of them, scheduling, lack of scorekeepers, poor direction.... Seems no one listened from several years ago....I know the tournament director in '06 acted like he couldn't give a crap... The bright lights of Vegas might be visible from the fields, but the execution of the tournaments there I saw had nothing National about it, more closely it looked like it was straight out of Bugtussle USA---hustle the teams for their cash. |

"i choose to go at the hitters. i am constantly working from the front of the rubber and the majority of my pitches are jumping from the rubber towards the hitter and much of the time i end up 10 feet closer to home plate" How do you 'go at hitters' in slowpitch softball with a big ole ball the size of the moon that is pitched about 2mph to guys who have a technical weapon in their hands? No offense intended at all Burbank...my hat's off to ya....everybody has some reason for their methods....And I read all your injuries... But the "Don';t feed the alligators " sign is there for a reason... and it ain't for the gators to read... |

But I can tell you this.....I will never play another game of Senior Softball if I am forced to wear a mask while pitching. Period...done. Slapping a mandatory mask on the pitcher is shortsighted and infringing. Everyone is afraid to talk about making it more challenging for the hitters...heaven forbid. Lord knows they have all the advantages now....When an umpire actuallly gives a pitcher 12 ft, out come the whinebuckets who now can't hit every pitch out of the park. Pitchers don't need protection as much as they need options. OK, Im done...thanks for listening. |

Except for lefties who to me are the most dangerous to field. These are the ones I always worry about if I pitch the power hitters outside to avoid giving them a swing at the sweet spot.... When the lefties hit that pitch, there's no telling, the ball might travel inside out, or extreme topspin, or it may look like they are going to pull the ball, and "voila", before you know it you have a new Trump tatoo.... With the lefties I get back only about an additional 8 ft and fade towards first.... You said it best, you give up something to get something...and I just as soon skip the Trump tatoo.... |

I can't imagine diving for a line drive, or a hard hit ground ball and falling on that mask....ouch, talk about damage!!! I'm not pretty to begin with, but if others want to use it....I think your gameface is gonna suffer. |

The root cause of the problem is not the bats or balls, it is the fact that in Senior softball, we have a lot of guys just trying to throw strikes but not really fielding the position. For those guys I recommend catching, no amount of chin guards or masks will help you. How do you know a pitcher? By the time the batter hits the ball, a pitcher will be at least 65-70' from the plate. A pitcher should be covering second with 2 outs and a runner on first. Sometimes if the infield is playing deep, a pitcher should be the one turning two at second to first. That being said, a little protective gear never hurt anyone. |

I pitch, and yes I have taken some shots....but you have to field the position....if you can't, it's time to become the catcher.... On the 0/0 count some prefer, that's too much advantage for the hitter. First there's a mat, so you can't work the umpire, it hits the mat or it doesn't. Second, the big hitters all start way outside the box so there is little plate/mat to work with.... The hitters have all the advantages, providing a 1/1 count helps level the field so a guy can't just sit on a pitch. The 1/1 count with no foul is fine. |

| March 7, 2007 SouthernLeather | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: softball strike zone Pitched USSA, ASA, ISA, NSA, and in Senior Softball. Hitting with the mat is usually easier because the strike zone is smaller and left to no interpretation. But I don't think making the mat bigger adds anything, it's fine the way it is. But there is one thing I would love to see at parks and that is for the umpire...a piece of tape, or mark on the fence which shows the height for the leagues that are played at that complex. The old rule of an umpire calling height based on whether or not is is visible underneath the visor is ridiculous. It doesn't work the same for an umpire 5'8 and an umpire 6'3. And many umps have no idea where 10 or 12 feet really is....An ump who doesn't let the pitcher throw the full 10 or 12 might as well go to the trunk of the car and get the tee out for everyone to hit off. Good teams that begin to have problems with the pitcher ALWAYS whine about the heighth....and having a mark/peice of tape on the fencepole would be a help to all. Eliminate the guesswork, mark the height. Last, forget about making the ball move (yes I do) pitching is really about momentum and reading the hitter. That's about the most you can do....but once you get in a team's head a little, you have a chance of slowing them down. And getting that twin killer up the middle doesn't hurt stopping those big rallys either... |
