I definitely like a short fielder better than a 5 man infield. You hardly ever see that in Indiana. Merry Christmas from all of your Indiana friends. Bring a bungee cord for that gate please. |
| Dec. 8, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: 11 defensive players 65+ In I believe 2017 (Dave could better tell you from the agenda) I requested the rule change be considered because our local 65+ teams asked for it because here they play SSUSA and SPA and felt like the rule differences caused them to keep two different rosters. There was no motion; so I reported that back. I tried because of their request. As a tournament director, I have been ripped many times when 65 and 70 divisions had to be combined in pool play that the 70 team was somehow cheating when playing a 65 team even though in SSUSA, 11 is normal defense for 70s. I know that no explanation or rule book will convince them otherwise. Never has; never will. That being said I do find it a little offensive that there are some incorrectly stating that the rule change was made to give a team an advantage. That doesn't happen. So your crystal balls are broken. These are my thoughts only. You don't have to agree. It is still fun to play with kids your own age. |
| Sept. 1, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Injuries Ccr fan, I was not a believer either. Here I am 14 years later, and it feels great. I am sure that if I had done the exercises that it would be even better. It is the Shelbourne clinic in Indy. Of course everyone's situation is different. My beloved husband was bone on bone. Dr Shelbourne told him that he could fix it but wanted him to lose some weight and do exercises to make the muscles stronger. He was never going to do that. He found another knee Dr that I do believe was a good Dr. He did the surgery. He died four days later of complications of an undiagnosed condition that caused him to have a heart attack. The condition would have eventually killed him anyway. The Dr was horrified because anyone who knew Coachie's dry sense of humor, he had asked him if he ever lost a patient before. Coachie was his first. Bottom line though my knee Dr's advice was good. The surgery should not have been done until he lost weight and strengthened the muscles. So moral of the story(ies), always get a second opinion if knee surgery is suggested first, and have your cardiovascular system checked in addition to a heart scan. |

| Aug. 26, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Injuries Ccr fan, what was happening with me was a constant pop and pain. So he said that after 15 years of being misdiagnosed that I was babying it and making it worse. So what he had me do was concentrate on making that knee bear weight. So it felt unnatural at first but balance my weight on that leg. It quickly got stronger. The pops and pain went away. I know that it sounds weird but felt like was going to pop out of socket every step. He is my hero. I stopped playing softball and skiing because of it. I do take batting practice now. I officiate and am not a fast runner but do get out to second and am pretty close to some runners to first. The knee feels great. After 14 years later, I am glad for my knee Dr. If a Dr immediately suggests surgery, don't be afraid to get a second opinion. I would be glad to share his clinic's information with you. I can't tell from your profile where you are from. I am in Indiana. |
| Aug. 25, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Injuries I was misdiagnosed three times in 15 years. I finally went to a good knee Dr. It turned out that my ACL is completely torn in two. He said that I must really be stubborn because being told three times that it was something minor, I continued to walk on it. So he is a big believer in surgery as a last resort. He said that he could replace mine any time but would be painful and take lots of therapy and since was still walking on it... He taught me exercises and behaviors to make it stronger. I did the behaviors but not the exercises. That was 14 years ago, and I can do pretty much everything but ski again. That Dr is my hero, and my knee feels great. |

So young guy ball, it may depend on rules. My inclination is sub...if have one. That is a real mixed bag between association and league rules on both international tie breaker and courtesy runner. I think our rule makes sense and would probably use. So what did you do, and what the heck was the 2B fussing/cursing about? We all hate getting the hook out at the end, but when they got to go, they got to go. Best wishes, my friend. |
| Aug. 6, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: What's the Call? Order of precedence is always important. I just had a bad throw take the catcher off to his left. He tagged the runner then ran back to the mat. His coach argued should be out. The rule is exactly as B.J. stated. I told him even if wasn't that his catcher created obstruction on a force out only play. The most interesting one that I saw was same scenario as mine, but the runner slid across the line before catcher stepped on the mat. The tag overrode both of the out situations. Nice job, blue. |

It would not have surprised me if it was recreational coed. The offense wasn't happy especially when the ball went in the dugout, but I can't take it back once I call it. NYGNYY, I apologize, but I honestly never call time based on a fielder asking for it. I have to assess everything on a field before I make that determination. I know that some fielders don't like that, but this is part of the job. I have been yelled at before by a couple of control freaks which I can take care of if they don't back down. I have also been yelled at because someone said that I called time when I clearly do not have a man's voice. I have a friend that I don't like his explanation on the field but is maybe true. Whenever he gets the former, he says "It's my time". I try to never talk to players like that. |

You never want to call it too soon, but sometimes that doesn't work. Perfect example the other night the 2B had the ball deep in dirt. I called time. He throws it to the pitcher high and misses it. Runners go. Ball even makes it into the dugout. I can't take it back once I call it. Sorry offense. So in my judgement, everything was done. Could you have predicted that a simple throw from there would have resulted in that? I didn't. In the scenario that I gave, I am not calling time just like B.J. said until that runner returns to the bag. I am not taking away your opportunity as a SS to get that out when they are that far off the bag even if you don't see it or decide not to throw it. I have one SS that loves lollygaggers going back to 1B. I am definitely never going to rob him of the opportunity for the out. |

I know that there are some players that get mad thinking that we should call time when they yell it; I don't unless I am sure that everything is done. Just because they don't see that advancing player 12' off of 1B doesn't mean that I don't. That also could cause a problem if someone thought that the time call was made by the umpire instead of a player. So if she called it when the player did, that is an issue, but once you call time, you cannot take it back no matter the possible outcome. Grayhitter59, I didn't see the situation, but if time was called, the play is dead. I agree with B.J. When I am doing bases, I only signal to my partner that I don't have anything else. When the play is live, I have never had a situation that caused me to verbalize time instead of my partner at the plate. I have when the play is not live for things like balls being thrown into the field or some other thing that my partner might not see. I had a game this weekend at the plate where twice a ball was thrown in while the play was live. Who does that? I of course could not call time until the play was done. |
| July 22, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Question about Brambleton, VA fields I am reading this and just shaking my head. I have always been a firm believer in fairness. So as long as the conditions are the same for both teams, what is the problem? Adding a temporary fence is a potential hazard in adult softball and honestly only makes sense in children's games. Then you have everyone's favorite issue; it is harder for the umpire to initially see that a HR has been hit over a temporary fence. When do you collect the balls? I don't want anyone back there during play. The only valid point that I see in this is about the outfielders. Again it is the same for both teams which makes this fair. |

I do a lot of one man except in tournaments. I just know taking a little time is sometimes the best and to wait but not anticipate. Watch the runners and fielders though. It hopefully doesn't happen often, but it can provide you some information. There are a few players that are extremely good actors and never give you a clue and actually sell the opposite of the truth. BJ is right on in what he says. He conducts clinics as well. |

Stick8, you are right on about some people believing that if the ball beats the runner that they are out. Of course that is not really true. The only other advice that I would offer to franjan is to pause and look for clues. There are a few good actors but not many. If a runner drops his head and starts to walk away, they certainly think that they were out on the tag. In that case it is best to call them out, otherwise you have another situation. Also if the fielder goes for the tag twice, they think that they missed the first tag. These are things that I have never heard in clinics but seem to help if you can't decide. Like the boys said be firm and decisive in your calls. |

In a couple of situations, never that one, I have heard someone complain that I called something. My best story is "foul ball". I won't go into it all, but it was 3B that said it. The coach was furious and told me that I called it; I was clearly pointing fair because an infielder touched it in fair territory. It is sad when you have to explain to a coach that my voice is clearly not a man's. |
