By the way, did Brickyard end up winning the 55's after we (AMR) went 3-0 in the prelims and then laid a big egg and went 2 and out?

If you're talking senior softball, at least in the Cleveland area, there's a couple of leagues. Talent-wise, the best league is in Maple Heights where you can find regular players all the way up to a few Major-Plus players. Mayfield Heights and North Royalton also have 50+ leagues but not tournament-quality competitive. There's a SPA tournament held in Brookpark every year Memorial day and there was also a SSUSA qualifier in Akron. I'm sure the folks in Akron, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati would love to chime in also about Ohio senior softball.

Discussion: AA Home Run Power

Hey Rabbit, congrats on a great tourney from AMR. It was nice to put a face with the name. As for us, we hit our share of home runs throughout the tourney, but its about the 5th consecutive Major tournament we've spent money for and travelled to and not won a single game. We were semi-competitve against the Merchants and Coors Light; you guys blew us out as did Checkcare. Not to be whiney, but as for ratings, shouldn't we be entitled to be competitive in the AAA division before getting moved to Major and then stuck there because the powers to be won't let us move down?

Yes, looks like nobody's going to Akron and that tourney may be kaput, unless somebody from Akron wants to pipe in otherwise. We'd like to go to Phoenix but need a qualifier to get there and our team funding is every man for himself except for the entry fees. That kind of limits us to how far and how many times we can travel.

Discussion: moving up

What about the opposite end of the spectrum. The best our team ever did was a 6th place finish in '05 in the Phoenix nationals while playing 50-AAA. We were moved up to 50-Major and in the past four tournaments we've gone to, we're 0-5 in all of them. It's not fun to outlay a grand out of each player's own pocket to travel to faraway places just to get annihalated. There should be some determining factor to allow a team to also move back down. Our backer is a 60+ HOF Major-Plus player granted and no offense to him but although he may travel with us, he doesn't play with us. We realize what we need to do to compete at the Major level, we just don't have the "Big Dogs" to be able to do it yet. And again, we never did win anything at the 50-AAA level in our minds to justify the move-up to Major.

Good luck to us all from this part of the country in Phoenix. Our team is also staying at the Embassy Suites, AMR 50's from Cleveland. Let's try and show those all year round playing guys what we can do.

Discussion: Staying back on the ball

Sometimes I think we all think too much. In the words of the great Yogi Berra, you can't think and hit at the same time. Muscle memory and automatic trained reactions on what to do where the ball is pitched without having to think about it is what we as athletes should be. A golfer doesn't think about his golf swing while he's swinging. He's already trained to know what to do. Same thing/concept in our softball swings.

Discussion: LVSSA Winter Worlds

Our team from Cleveland played there last September. We got classified major even though we feel we're only a AAA team. When we played the better major teams, we got smoked. In fact, we were 0-5 in the Eastern Nationals major division and only a couple of games were close. As far as the fields were, the infields were excellent but outfields left a lot to be desired. I think we played 3 and one up on the HR's.Cheap motel is on Boulder Highway, Arizona Charlie's and they were the host motel. Not a lot of amenities, but OK on price. A lot of our guys had comp rooms on the strip and stayed there. Good luck driving. There should be cheap airline flights to Vegas and rental cars aren't all that much. Plus our plane took an extra 10 minutes or so and flew us over the Grand Canyon.

Gary19, I only saw that this year's June Barberton tournament was 60's & 65's. What happened to the 50's & 55's? Know anything?

Discussion: walk or pitch

HOF'er (or soon to be) Mike Macenko is in our league and we pitched to him almost every time. The few times we walked him were when runners were on third and second and first base was open so it was a no brainer. Couple of times we let him hit with sacks loaded but four runs were already in so the subsequent home run only counted for one run anyway.
Just have to play your cards right and hope the rest of the guys around him don't beat you. To walk him seems silly.

Discussion: Wedding rings--take them off?

I've seen too many dislocated fingers, I take mine off. We're also not allowed to wear rings at work for safety purposes. Over the years, there's been more than one person catching a ring on something and pulling the whole finger off.
If the wife's at the game or tournament with me, she'll put my ring on her finger during the games. She gets a kick out of it and it works as a good luck charm of sorts.

Discussion: Looking for league over 60 near Oberlin, Ohio

Only thing I know of is the Huff-N-Puffers over 60 league in Parma. They play during the week in the mornings at Nike Park near Tri-C college.

Other league is the Bedford Hts. senior league (50+) that plays Monday and Wednesday evenings. Fields are behind city hall, not too far off from I-480.
