Discussion: Congratulations East Coast Teams

I want to congratulate the following East Coast teams for their finish in the SSUSA World Championships in Phoenix. Sport Center (RI) 50 AAA Champs, Rochester 50's (NY) 50 Major Champs, and Bay State Bombers (Ma) 55 AAA Champs. It is amazing also that Sport Center and Bay State Bombers won their divisions in the Salt City Classic qualifier in Syracuse,NY while Rochester 50's finished in second place in this qualifier. Renda Rhodes (NJ) finished in 2nd in 50 AAA division in Phoenix. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE EAST COAST TEAMS...VERY GOOD SHOWING TO THEM ALL !

Discussion: 3 Game Bracket Scheduling

I would like to propose to SSUSA to abolish the 3 game bracket guarantee scheduling format from tournament play. Here are my reasons why:

1. Instead of a guarantee of 5 games in tourney you can have 2 game round robin with double elim bracket play. By doing this you can hold entry fee increases per tourney by eliminating 1 game guarantee from each team. Many teams in a tourney already play over 5 games in a tourney.

2. Most team managers I have talked to dislike the 3 game bracket format because sometimes teams may end up ahead of them in the bracket depending when they win or lose during bracket play. Also teams often end up playing a team they already played earlier in the bracket play.

3. Easier for teams to follow the schedule in a regular double elim format.

4. Easier for a director to schedule the bracket without having to worry about whether or not a "3rd game" for a team will be played or not.

What do other managers think of this ? Please respond and state your views.

Discussion: A THANKLESS JOB

A THANKLESS JOB

A coach’s job is a thankless one. He must be an organizer, accountant, travel director, motivator, babysitter, and sometimes even a player on a team. He must know the playing rules and organizational rules of his sport in order to allow his players to concentrate on one thing only while on the ball field……their own performance to help their team compete to the best of their ability. What does he ask for in return ? All he wants is cooperation from his players by doing what is asked of them whether it be by just responding to emails, phone calls, collection of funds or dues, and especially their cooperation on the ball field. His job is to prepare his team to compete in tournament play and to have the ability to judge the talent he has to work with on his team.
A coach’s job is to give his team the best chance they have to win a game by making the lineup and making substitutions during the game. He basically has to balance the playing time of his team members in order to keep everyone happy and at the same time be competitive to win. When he makes a substitution during a game, his goal is not to embarrass a player but instead give his team an opportunity to win the game with a gut move. Like a ballplayer who makes an error during the game, a coach may also make an error in a move or decision that may result in a loss. Like the ballplayer who makes the error, the coach is trying to perform to the best of his ability to help his team win the game. If he does not field his best competitive team during a tourney in bracket play (when it counts), then he is doing an injustice to those players who have paid their dues in order to participate on a winning team while at the same time having fun over the weekend.
I recently have heard of a team that voted to change coaches. The coach had just completed a season with the team that had the best season ever. They had won 2 qualifiers and an Eastern National, finished in 2nd place in a qualifier and a Winter Worlds, 3rd place in 2 TOC qualifiers, and earned a TOC berth that they participated in at the end of the season. Obviously they had a successful season and the coach was pleased with what they had accomplished. But he was rewarded by the team members taking a vote with 8 players present during a batting practice session to choose a new coach. The vote was 5 to 3 to change coaches and the coach was notified that he could remain with the team if he wanted to just arrange travel plans (i.e. hotels and rental cars etc.) and also handle the paperwork involved with the organization (i.e. submitting entry fees and roster moves etc.). The coach was notified of this “team” decision by phone from one of the team members who was not even at the “meeting”. He told them that their coach would never agree to this new “position” on the team and he was correct. This is how he was thanked by his team for all of the work that he had done for them during the year.
How have you thanked your coach today ?

Discussion: IN MEMORIAM • JIM SHERMAN

I am saddened by the passing of Jim Sherman who I knew through SSUSA as being a fellow director of the organization. He was respected by all and well-deserving of his recent induction into the SSUSA Hall of Fame. I will always remember his great smile and an excellent poker player at each SSUSA National convention. He was a great mentor and motivator especially in promoting and instituting the training in CPR and use of the defibrillators at SSUSA tourneys. He will missed by all who knew him.

My condolences go out to Linda and all of his family at their loss of a wonderful man.

Discussion: Revised Rule Change Concerning Pitchers

Great job rules committee members on surveying the softball managers about the pitcher protection issue and I believe you have solved the problem. By letting the game be played as it should be and allowing pitchers to sign a waiver concerning whether they want to wear protective gear before they pitch will hopefully reduce injuries. Hopefully no players will be ejected for INTENTIONALLY HITTING THE BALL AT THE PITCHER.

Good job,

Chuck Sharkey

Discussion: TONY MAIURINO PASSES AWAY

THE SYRACUSE, NY. SOFTBALL COMMUNITY AND MANY OTHER PLAYERS AND TEAMS WHO KNEW TONY ARE SADDENED BY HIS PASSING ON DEC.30TH, 2008.

TONY, WHO WAS 71 YRS OLD, WAS EXCITED AND GETTING READY TO PLAY NEXT WEEKEND IN THE TOC IN FLORIDA FOR THE SYRACUSE CYCLONES 60'S TEAM. HE HAD A HEART ATTACK ON DEC. 30TH AND PASSED AWAY. THIS IS A SUDDEN SHOCK TO THOSE WHO HAD KNOWN TONY AS HE ALWAYS WAS PROUD AT KEEPING HIMSELF IN GREAT SHAPE TO PLAY THE GAME HE LOVED. OBVIOUSLY, AT 71 YRS OLD AND STILL ABLE TO PLAY ON A 60'S TEAM....TONY COULD PLAY WITH THE BEST OF THEM. I AM SURE HE WILL BE WATCHING MANY SOFTBALL TOURNEYS FROM THOSE BLEECHERS IN HEAVEN. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AT THEIR LOSS.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, CONTRIBUTIONS CAN BE MADE TO HUMANE ASSOCIATION, 4915 1/2 W.TAFT RD, LIVERPOOL, NY 13088 OR THE ASPCA, 5878 E. MOLLOY RD, SYRACUSE, NY 13211.

Hi JC15....I coach a Men's 50 AAA team in New York called Shark Sports. I would be interested in talking to you about playing next year. We travel to many tourneys and won 2 tourneys, finished 2nd in 2 others and just finished 5th in Fort Myers (Winter Nationals). You can email me at Cshark44@aol.com. We play in tourneys along the East Coast.

Discussion: LOOKING FOR A TEAM SPONSOR

Our Shark Sports Men's 50 AAA team is looking for a team sponsor for the 2009 season. We travel along the East coast competing in the SSUSA softball tourneys and would be spreading the sponsor's name in that area along with being in the SSUSA National Newspaper. We usually go to 4-5 tourneys each year (1 per month) and we are looking for a sponsor to pay entry fees for these tourneys (about $ 450 per tourney).

The sponsor would be associated with a winning team with a class act.

If interested contact:

Discussion: NORTHEAST CHAMPIONSHIPS (Cape May, NJ) - Scores & Bracket Results

Dave, I want to congratulate you on an excellent job in running the Cape May tourney considering the inclement weather we had before the games actually started. You did a great job and our team agreed that we will be looking to return to this tourney in 2009. The teams in the 50 AAA bracket were evenly matched and even though we finished in second place, we lost to a good team (Gubiotti's Insurance) and a great bunch of guys. All the teams in the 50 AAA were a CLASS ACT and Dave you were a part of that CLASS in running a great tourney.

Thanks again......and thank you also Fran for your help,

Chuck Sharkey
