Discussion: When Is It Bat Altering?

I just came from the Winter Worlds manger meeting and Dave Dowell from SSUSA said that spraying adhesive on the barrel of the bat is altering it and if caught you would get suspended. I guess there was a problem in the Florida Worlds, guys spraying their bats to make the barrels tacky just like the Dudley Lightning. So yes, to PM Finger's question, it is illegal.

Discussion: Passing of Fred Purvis

I had the pleasure of playing with Fred a few years ago in 55M. Like what's already been said, he was one of the nicest men you'll ever meet in Senior Softball, a gentle giant of a man. You'll be missed Freddie, RIP.

Discussion: Pitching

We had a similar call in the Worlds a few weeks ago that almost cost us the game. Our pitcher was outside the pitcher's box when he pitched and the umpire called it a "dead ball". The batter swung and flew out for the 3rd out of the inning but since the umpire called "dead ball" the out didn't count. They went on the score 3 more runs and got their 5 for the inning. If he would have made the right call, "illegal pitch" and the batter swung it's a live ball and the 3rd out. Luckily we scored enough in the open to overcome his mistake.

Ok, here's my suggestion, after each day of the tournament, have the TD at each site take a picture of the bracket, send it to Dave and he could post them on the web site while he is having his cup of coffee before he goes to bed (sorry Dave). He wouldn't have to do any calculations or transferring of the scores, just post the pictures. I still can't believe that with the biggest tournament in the world that Dave is the only person who can post the scores. Dave, get some help.

Will, you can start playing 50s in November of this year at the Winter Worlds. As long as you turn 50 in 2015 you can play in that age group for the 2015 senior softball season which runs from Nov 2014 to Oct 2015.

The 2 turf fields are ok, the 2 grass fields are pretty bad, the year we played there, they didn't cut the outfield grass. Luckily I play in the dirt and didn't have to wade through it. The lights are terrible if you have to play at night and it is way the heck out there in North East Vegas.

This will be my 7th year, I love it, the fields are great, the Canyons complex is one of the best in the country. Senior bats are allowed and there use to be unlimited home runs but they've made a rule change for this year, similar to SSUSAs HR rules. If you like the outdoors and hiking, Zion is an hour away and Bryce Canyon is 2 hours away. I make a vacation out of it and spend some time at one of the national parks. The only downside is they spread it out over a week (M-F for 60s), 1 of the days you only play 1 game and the other seeding day you play 2, then the tournament starts (3 seeding games and a DE bracket). But I'll keep going as long as I can.

Walt, I played a couple of practice games in Chandler yesterday with the 60s and there was a 65 year old picture who said he was looking for a team. I'll get his info and give him your phone number.

Discussion: Huntsman Senior Games HR Rule

Here are the New Home Run Rules for this year copied out of the Handbook; It's a nice change from the unlimited HRs in the past.

Homerun Rule:

Pool play games: (all classifications)
•5 runs max per inning per team
•(Unlimited in last declared inning and all extra innings)
•Two Home runs allowed + one-up (Home team in unlimited inning can’t go one-up)
•Additional home run is an out

Bracket Play games:
Major Plus
•5 runs max per inning per team
•(Unlimited in last declared inning and all extra innings)
•Unlimited Home runs allowed
Major
•5 runs max per inning per team
•(Unlimited in last declared inning and all extra innings)
•Seven Home runs allowed + one-up (Home
team in unlimited inning can’t go one-up)
•Additional home run is an out
AAA
•5 runs max per inning per team
•(Unlimited in last declared inning and all extra innings)
•Three Home runs allowed + one-up (Home team in unlimited inning can’t go one-up)
•Additional home run is an out
AA,A,B,C,D
•5 runs max per inning per team
•(Unlimited in last declared inning and all extra innings)
•Straight one-up (Home team in unlimited inning can’t go one-up)
•Additional home run is an out
Once the Maximum run per inning has
been obtained, no additional runs will score as a result of an over-the-fence home run; however, the over-the-fence home run will count in the team’s total.

Hit and Sit rule will be used!

Pure, I love to play just as much as the next guy and I'm all for playing with your friends and enjoying the camaraderie but I'll give you another example of the poor work of the tournament committee. 2 years ago I went with friends who play on a 60AA team, but we had to play 55s because I was 57 at the time. We signed up for 55A, played the seeding games and went 1-2 they dropped us down to B for the Bracket and we went 2 and out, that was fine. So last year our coach signed us up for 55B again based on what we did the previous year. The tournament committee placed us in 55AAA for the seeding games, we got run ruled 2 of the 3, complained to the TD, he said he would put us in the correct Bracket after the seeding games. He didn't move us and we got run ruled the 1st 2 games in 55AAA and went home. It's like they said "pay your $1000 entry fee, get beat up on and go home and like it". No one likes to get run ruled in 4 of 5 games, that isn't fun for either team. All I asked them to do was use a teams previous year/years rating to start with in the seeding games and adjust from there but it falls on deaf ears. Sorry for the rambling.

Last year was my 5th year, some good experiences and some bad. Great fields and the area is very nice, usually do a Zion day trip for a little hiking. For the 55s and 60s, 4 and 5 days is too long, cut it down to 3 days. There are always teams that seem to sandbag since it's an open roster. Your tournament committee doesn't use other assn ratings and they don't even look at the teams rating from previous years. Two years ago a Team won the Gold medal in the A division and the next year they were placed in the B division, it doesn't make any sense. At least look to see what a team does and how they were rated in the previous years they were there.

I didn't see the Freak 98 on the ASA Banned bat list, the original Freak has been banned but the Freak 98 is still good to use in ASA leagues.

Discussion: Positioning of screen protecting pitcher

HJ, our league in Sun Lakes Az uses a screen, mainly for the reasons you've already heard. Our league has player ages from 55 to 75 and it's usually the older guys that pitch. We use Senior bats and good balls and the screen is at a fixed position in front of the rubber. The pitcher has to pitch over the screen, and hitting the screen with a batted ball is a foul ball strike, if you hit the screen after 2 strikes, you're out. One advantage for the umpire is that our screen is 6 ft high, so there can't be a flat pitch because the ball has to go over the screen. I think it works well in league play but I wouldn't want to see it in tournament ball.
