I forgot. Senior Moment. Vicki Oltean runs an excellant tournaments in Palm Springs. If I'm not mistaken her tournaments fall under the SPA organization. If this is correct....we have eight (8) organizations running Senior Softball tournaments in SoCal. I apologize up front if I am missing anyone. See you on the ball field. Kevin

Jose.....Thanks for asking about the five (5) Senior Slowpitch Softball Associations in SoCal. Obviously the list is even longer than I imagined.

The Five Plus Associations offering Slow Pitch Senior Softball:

1. Senior Softball (SSUSA)
2. Top Gun Senior Softball Association
3. SoCal Senior Softball Tournaments (SCSST) Don Reddig
4. SoCal Senior Softball Association (SCSSA) Marv Ruddell
5. No. County Senior Softball (NCSS)
6. MSA - Doug Skaggs
7. ASA - Nate Hines

As you can imagine senior organizaqtion vying for limited field avaiability no matter the age groups. By the way, I'm sure you noticed the SCSST tournamen; May 15 - 18 in Riverside and July 26 - 27 in Poway. But with so many playing opportunities I can imagine why it would be easy to forget some.

Side Note. Mike, I always enjoyed bringing our Top Gun team to Oxnard. Fun place to play. Also, thank you and the Oxnard Rookies for supporting Top Gun and traveling south to SoCal and compete in one of our SSUSA/Top Gun Tournaments. Keith (aka. Kevin) Evans

Jose, The tournament you're referencing in San Clemente is a non SSUSA event. The tournament in July is being run by SCSSA and is a non-sanctioned SSUSA tournament. Since there are five organizations running senior softball tournaments in SoCal, I can understand the confusion. On a side note, I have played in the snow (29 degrees) in Reno and 105 degrees in Las Vegas. Point me in the direction of the next tournament and I'm there. Good luck this season and I'll see you on the ball field. Kevin

Jose. Thank you for your message. I agree that we could use a lot more SSUSA tournaments in SoCal, but we are limited on field availability. With five organizations running senior softball tournaments and only two operating under SSUSA guidelines, it reduces the number of available tournaments. I also agree that I like to play local as well. I'm sure that you have already noticed that SSUSA has moved the California State Championship to Hemet (July 8th - July 13th). This tournament has traditionally been held in Northern California, but SSUSA is trying to bring more major tournaments to SoCal and this is a great start. So let's get those 100+ SoCal teams to support this event. I'm sure we'll see you on the field. Good luck this season. Kevin

Jose aka Salsakid49. I normally don't respond to very many posts on the message board and especially do not respond on behalf of SSUSA. Your post is referencing a Top Gun SSUSA tournament and I do feel compelled to reply to your message. The May SSUSA Top Gun tournament is a qualifying event and the scheduling and staffing of the event is the total responsibility of Top Gun and not SSUSA. With six weeks left until the tournament there were only 6 teams signed up in all of the age groups combined. We contacted many of the teams that are regular supporters of SSUSA/Top Gun tournaments and they indicated that they could not play back to back weekends. So the Top Gun Association made an executive decision and cancelled the tournament, giving teams an opportunity to find another tournament. As you know, there are five organizations that conduct senior softball tournaments in SoCal. Of those organizations, two offer tournaments using SSUSA rules. Three other groups use modified tournament rules to adapt to the local demand. All five of the organizations offer quality tournaments each and every month. So just check the calendar of events and I look forward to seeing you on the ball field. Kevin Evans, President Top Gun Senior Softball Association

Discussion: Promoting Tournaments

I agree with the message board that it is great to know the teams that are signed up ahead of the deadline. Since I'm involved with the SSUSA Top Gun Tournaments, I try to keep a running total of the teams signed up as historically the tournaments have filled up before the deadline. I usually e-mail those teams and managers that have previously signed up for a Top Gun Tournament or have contactd me to add them to the invitation list. I also update our interest list of teams in the California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah areas to send invitations to them to join us in SoCal. It is easier to communicate with teams when you are dealing with a qualifying tournament. With the Major Tournaments, there are many last minute changes and it would be problematic to try and post a complete list of teams in real time prior to the deadline. Having managed a team in the past, our teams travel because of the tournament and competition. We have never shyed away from a tournament because of the teams entered. I will agree that it is less desiable to travel out of town and play in a bracket with one or two other teams.

Discussion: Please send you thoughts and prayers... for the RUDY FLORES FAMILY...

To the Flores Family. On behalf of the Top Gun Senior Softball Family, I extend our thoughts and prayers to you in this time of saddness and reflection on the life of your son, husband, and father. We will all miss Rudy for his competitiveness and sportsmanship displayed on and off the field. He was an ambassador of the game and will be remembered forever. Side Note: My utmost respect and admiration to the players of SoCal 55's for keeping Rudy's dream alive and competing at the highest level in the Spring World Tournament.

An idea for the base dimensions:

40+ - 60+ divisions 70' bases
65+ - 80+ and all women's divisions 65' bases.

Just a thought.

Discussion: Thoughts for the upcoming SSUSA Rules Committee meeting!

After reading all of the e-mails I can't help but offer an opinion. In major+ as well as all of the other divisions, all teams are not created equal. I am not a major+ player or a player on a major+ team. I agree that breaking up the teams is not an option in my opinion. But I would offer up the idea of an equalizer. How about any Major+ team that wins a major championship or has a game winning percentage over the course of the year at or above 75% that they give other Major+ teams not rated at that level a run for each inning played. This option might help the newcomer Major+ teams to be competitive with the longstanding teams. JMHO.
