| June 10, 2011 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Very Disappointed in Rock N Reno Mother Nature has not been very kind to senior softball this year. The Top Gun Championship in February was cancelled after one day; Spring Worlds in St. George lost a day because of rain in March; Southwest Championship in Laughlin was a wind tunnel in April; and the Rock-n-Reno snow in May was quit a challenge. Being from SoCal I have become spoiled by the great weather that we have had for many seasons. This is a very unusual year for weather. My hats off to Terry, Fran, David, and all of the tournament directors for trying their best to complete all of these tournaments. Rain, sleat, or even snow will not keep me from playing senior softball, it just might be more challenging. |

| Feb. 23, 2011 TGIII | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A ? TOMAR77...I appreciate your comments but I feel compelled to clarify some of your comments. I'm in a position to make these corrections as the current President of the Top Gun Senior Softball Association. 1) The Top Gun Senior Softball Association was created to give senior softball players an avenue to play in a competitive softball environment. 2) The Top Gun Championships this week is an SSUSA sanctioned tournament and NON of the proceeds are going to our association. THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING TOURNAMENT FOR TOP GUN. 3) This tournament was created through a collective partnership with SSUSA; Sportsplex USA; San Diego Sports Council; and the Top Gun Senior Softball Association. 4) Through this tournament, Top Gun Senior Softball is hoping to bring more attention to the fun, comaraderie, and passion that senior softball provides for all of us. As Don (Tate22) stated it's all about great competition on excellent fields in good weather. 5) Top Gun Senior Softball is honored to have our Association name attached to this major tournament. Being associated with SSUSA; Sportsplex; and the San Diego Sports Council to bring a quality event to San Diego is first and foremost in my opinion. The ring design is the decision of SSUSA not The Top Gun Senior Softball Association. 6) Top Gun Senior Softball has a long standing history dating back to 1992 when our 60's team first stepped out on the field in a sanctioned Senior Softball Tournament. Since then we have grown to eleven teams (8 mens and 3 womens) ranging in age groups 50+ - 75+. I'm proud of our history and reputation in the senior softball community. 7) We will be hosting three SSUSA Top Gun qualifying tournaments throughout the year at a cost of $325 per tournament and I hope your team will join us. Lastly, I would like to thank the teams from Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New York for coming to San Diego to compete and supporting senior softball. Kevin Evans Top Gun Senior Softball |

| Jan. 29, 2010 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Want to play! # 2 Great comments by everyone. Two areas that I feel are important is how a player plays on Championship Sunday. Many players play well leading up to the final day and collapse on Sunday for whatever reason. The other item that I keep track of is the batting average for a player in a two-out situation. Teams that score a lot of runs after two outs are usually the successful ones. Confidence under pressure is a key to winning. As for me, I manage the team and play outfield. |
| Jan. 8, 2010 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Playing to win or keep everyone happy? Great topic. Winning solves everything. You get no complaints in batting order, number of batters, defensive positions, etc. when your team is winning. Players don't complain about the money they spend as long as the team keeps winning. As soon as you lose a tournament or multiple tournaments than the second guessing and finger pointing starts. When you lose, all managers are now placed in the situation you just discribed. Best rule, communicate with your players and let them know what is expected. |
| Jan. 5, 2010 TGIII | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Combine Major & Major+? I see a lot of different opinions but the division that comes in to play is the Major division. Since many of the Major teams are actually very good AAA teams and or weak Major+ teams, what would be the criteria for separating the division. My list in order would be Homeruns, major tournament victories, run differential, and calibur of players. Before we combine divisions, we need a set criteria agreed by a majority of the managers. |
| Dec. 22, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: position Great question. Both positions are equally important in the role they play. However, games are won or lost based on the outfield. A fatigued outfielder will play next to the fence, not charge the ball, and have nothing on their throws. This creates an extra base situation for the offensive team and good teams will take advantage of it. A fatigued outfielder will also have a hard time hitting as their legs are dead and they are now swinging only with their arms. A tired infielder will not give up extra base hits, so theoretically it will take three hits to score. A tired outfield will give up a run with two hits (excluding homeruns). A fast outfield will win a lot of games. However a well timed doubleplay will break the back of any team and change momentum. Have a Happy Holiday |
| Dec. 14, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: BEST PITCH TO THROW Webbie25...thank you for the comment about a low outside pitch being hit back up the middle. My experiense has been that if you throw a low outside strike with two strikes there is a high percentage of the balls that are hit back up the middle. I know pitchers that when they throw a certain pitch, the probability of that pitch being hit back up the middle is very high. The pitch is usually thrown when a pitcher wants a doubleplay grounder. Thank you for your comments. |
| Dec. 11, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: BEST PITCH TO THROW I have never seen this question asked and I'm not sure pitchers will share their secrets, but here goes. What is the best pitch you throw to get batters out? I find a lot of pitchers throw low, flat, and outside. From the hitters out there, where do you hit a low, flat, outside pitch? Just wondering? |
| Dec. 10, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Its Unanimous - The Best Senior Softball Players Are in California and Florida E4/E6.....I have never played in the Major+ division so my opinion is strictly based on the Major and AAA divisions. I live in Southern California and the teams that I play with are regionally based. The majority of the teams are San Diego County based with a sprinkling of players from Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties. Players on our teams come from all walks of life and are usually recommended by other senior softball players in the area. Most of the players come from the senior softball recreation leagues and with the AA, AAA, and Major classifications, there is usually a team that fits their particular skill level. Your observation appears to be accurate that the majority of the comments are from Major+ players. I would suspect that recreation softball is widely played throughout the country and that there are a lot of players that can and do play senior softball. Unfortunately there are only a few players that can compete at the Major+ level. So the rule appears to be fine if you are forming a teams in the AA, AAA, and Major division. As far as the best players (Major+) they should have the opportunity to play on the best teams without geographical restrictions or boundaries. |
| Dec. 8, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Home Run Rule? Marv 19, PlanoPlayer, and LP. I respect your opinions and understand your reasoning. I would like to share a different prospective. I witnessed a set of games at the Winter Worlds that the Home Run rule balanced the game. I saw a AAA team hit 15 homeruns in two games. The unfortunate part was that all homeruns after they reached their magic number of three were outs. The team had a few open inning because of balls hit over the fence and put the team in a hole. The team was an excellent group of players with a lot of talent. However a team that hits 15 homeruns in two games is not a AAA team and would probable be on the high end of Major or Major+. The rule balenced the game for both teams competing. Both pitchers were not subjected to lazer shots back at the pitcher but skilled hitters placing the ball to all parts of the field. Whether you are a Major+, Major, AAA, or AA player, you have the skills to compete and probable place the ball wherever you want to. Let's let teams play within their skill range and properly place homerun hitting teams in the catagories that support the skill level as well. Don't change the Home Run Rule because it is doing exactly what it was intended to do. Keep an even playing field for all of us. |

| Nov. 5, 2009 TGIII | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: My team wants the one up rule back in SSUSA I would agree with adding the one-up rule if the following rules applied. If a team continuously exceeds their homerun limit as designated in their division they should be moved up to the next division. My team recently played in the 55+ Major division and we did not even come close to our limit of 5 homeruns. If you need the one-up rule, move up a division. AA and AAA teams should not be subjected to teams that maximize their home run limits. There is no defense that can defend balls hit over the fence. I know SSUSA is now tracking homeruns and teams that meet or exceed their limits. Maybe they will use thise numbers in determining a teams classification. The Major+ division should be unlimited homeruns. For those that can hit the homeruns, let them hit homeruns without penalty. |
| Oct. 14, 2009 TGIII | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Iced-down softballs Andy I know what you mean. We played in a tournament that had iced down balls and two of our bats were broken because of it. The ball really flew out of the park but we paid a huge price for broken bats. |
