Good to hear from you Nancy. Ya that little Horse race 1st week of May kepts about 6 Louisville teams home on that weekend. We went to TOC in Feb. and have not played since. Funny thing is SPA has Tourney in Gallatin,TN on same weekend so 2 close early Tourney's that we have to miss. I talked to Ridge about moving his to another weekend and was told he would check it out but he left it the same.
See ya,don't work to hard!

ICELADY,I love the name change for this tournament! February 26th made it a year since we lost Jimmy and I can see him up there now with that big chest stuck out and grin on his face telling everyone that he has a big softball tournament name after him. He loved this game as much as anyone that I have known. THANKS

Thanks monty, your right with it being a toss up with the weather. Last year in Phoenix we had record highs and last month at TOC record lows. I looked up average temp for Birmingham for April and its 74 & 48. In our part of country there are a lot of tourneys in June,July & Aug but very few early one's. I know there were not many teams in Birmingham last couple of years, combining divisions, age groups etc. Seems like there would be more teams show if it was in April or even May,because August is a very busy month. IMHO

It's to late for this year, but what about holding this Tourney in April. The way its scheduled now its held on 3rd weekend of August. There are 3 reasons why I would like to see this moved. After we played in TOC last month there is no where within a 6 hour drive to play until May for teams in KY-IN area. Also the way the schedule is now the Northern C-ships is the last weekend of August and we could drive to both but like most teams don't like to play back to back weekends. And its hot as heck in AL in August normally high humidity and say late April should be warm enough in Birmingham.
What do you teams in the Southern state's think and SSUSA STAFF what are your thoughts?

Discussion: How would YOU rate teams

This is my 14th year in senior ball and have been in aaa and major about same amount. What I have observed is that there is very little difference between aaa and major but a big gap between aa and aaa and a bigger gap between M and M+. Before a team is moved from M to M+ staff should look at rooster and see if its a local league team or a hand picked team from 4-5-or 6 states etc. There is no way a league team can compete with a hand pick team no matter what equalizer is used. One game maybe but not for whole weekend. We are rated major and last 2 years a very good player from a bordering state has asked about playing with us,but they can not play in our league so was told no. We us league games as practice for tourney's,some will say that give us an advantage and I agree but if one of our players get hurt or can not go to a tourney we do not pick up any one we go with what is left or do not go.
I know M+ has low # of teams at most tourney's and I am amused when M+ player's post on here that combine the M & M+ will fix the promblem, well the M divison is not broke we have good # at most tourney's and I'm tired of bale outs. Why not fix the problem in house and do away with the 55 age group in M+ and go with 50-57 & 58-64 most do not move up when eligible anyway. My 2 cents

How about flipping the Winter Nationals and TOC. The way it is now if a team won Winter Nationals in November 2009 they qualified for 2011 TOC so that's 16 months team has to stay together.

Gary,we went and played OK but not good enough. Went 1-1 in seeding games and 1-2 in Tourney. Congrats to a very good Bay State team for their win. They beat us 1st game of tourney, we had won previous 2 games with them, guess it was their turn.

Discussion: Want to play! # 2

DD in your thread above the batter did not make any outs so yes he was 4 for 4 imo. I belive the old saying that a walk is as good as a hit and have guys on our team that after getting a strike will swing at anything close like they are afraid to get 2 strikes. It's unbelieveable how many rally's start with a walk. Who says the crisp 2 hopper of 3rd baseman's glove is a error? That is the very reason I use OBP,I've seem players get mad and argue with scorekeeper or other players whether it's a hit or error. Sure he was lucky when SS booted the DP ball but at least he didn't pop up. We have seen guys drop their shoulder in DP situation to make sure they do not hit a ground ball and in most cases its a fly out. My 2 cents

Discussion: Want to play! # 2

canljack,in thread # 1 you said that a Manager should not play. I would guess that about half of the teams we play are managed by a player . I will agree that its not for everyone but I have been doing it for years with very few problems. I play 3rd base so its easy to make a change it would be very difficult for a outfielder. Also we are a local league team which helps, may be harder if its a hand picked team. The hardest things are kepting up with runners and ego's.
We have 6 good outfielders that also are good hitters and if all are healthy I bat 12 and rotate the 6 on defense and hope to have 4 in good shape for Sunday.Of course if all 6 are healthy then they all want to be out there but we get through it,are have so far lol
Mr M I agree on the OBP being important and that is what I kept. The one thing that will get a team beat is routine fly balls and usually the ones that hit the ball down will have the highest OBP. We also have 3 or 4 slow guys that hit a lot of ground balls and are DP threats so I try to bat a fast guy that gets a lot of doubles in front of them.
