Discussion: where are all the pitchers

Wow. We have gone from mandatory masks for pitchers to pitching rubber, batters boxes etc. etc. etc. A lot of good posts
I still am convinced that a pitching mask will hamper some pitchers and slow reaction time and cause more to get hit. We all know that it is very possible to get hit in the head area and other areas if you pitch, I have been hit a lot but never in the head area. My only point is that it should be my decision to wear protective gear and no one elses. I am 72 not 12 and I can make my own decisions in that area. I guess time will tell about the safety issue and if it is a lasting rule we must abide by or give up the art of pitching. Wyo 22

Discussion: where are all the pitchers

Thanks to all who commented. Sorry I was not involved in all the previous discussions but I was unaware of the rule change.
You all have made some very interesting points and some very valid ones. What I have learned by reading all the comments is that most pitchers still feel it should be their decision on the protective gear and not an association. I have pitched for many many years and no one can tell me that wearing a mask is not going to hamper my play and my reaction time at getting a glove on the ball, and getting a glove on the ball is my best protection from injury.
I am beginning to believe that they just should furnish a screen for all games and then pitchers would be protected. It sure takes a lot out of the game though.
Anyway I agree that there will not be any changes for 2014, the decision has been made. Play safe my friends and God Bless. Wyo22

Discussion: where are all the pitchers

After reading the newest copy of the Senior News I am astonished at the new mandatory rule for all pitchers to wear masks to pitch. Then they make it even worse by making home runs outs over a certain limit, therefore making pitchers a target for players who have to hit down and up the middle to keep the ball in the park. My concern is getting hit in other areas than the head area because of the distraction of the stupid mask keeping me from gloving the ball. I have been pitching for many many years and I have NEVER been hit in the head area, but I truly believe wearing a mask will slow my reaction to the ball enough that I will get hit more than ever.
What was wrong with letting the pitcher decide if he wanted to wear protective gear or not and signing the line up card waiving the gear. Someone please tell me who is doing all the complaining that pitchers are not wearing protective gear that this rule had to be made. All pitchers know that they are closer to the batter than other players and if they pitch from the rubber and step forward they are asking for trouble. Pitch from the back line and back up when releasing the ball and be safer.
I would like to see if other pitchers who chose not to wear the mask would give their opinions on this subject. Surely I am not the only one who is unhappy with the rule. Wyo22

Discussion: Rock 'N Reno

I agree KUDOS on the early field assignments. It really helps those of us who make hotel reservations for our teams. I hope they get some tentative field assignments out for Phoenix asap. Its really important there as the different fields are so far apart and the hotels are pretty busy that time of year in Phoenix. Get the hint SSUSA try and help us out with early decision making on those assignments, really be appreciated. I am alsoalready looking for an RV Park but also need to be as close to fields as possible. Thanks Wyo22

Discussion: Ridge Hooks has been hospitalized

To all who are in close contact with Ridge. Please relay that his buddy from Cheyenne is praying for a total and speedy recovery. For those who do not know Ridge has a Wyoming background years ago, Casper Wyoming. We have talked several times about it. He is a man of deep religious roots and is always concerned about others and now it is time to repay some of that respect as we all pray for him and his family in this time of need. God bless Ridge. Discussion: Scrap Iron loses another legend

For those of you who have not heard Scrap Iron lost another friend and fellow ball player. Ken Green most recently of the Scrap iron 70,s team passed away recently while visiting in Texas. Most will remember Kenny as he and Murl Skalla were pretty much inseperable at tournaments for years. They together were the ones who started and named Scrap Iron who now has about 9 traveling teams in different age brackets and divisions. He was a close friend and will be missed tremendously. Wyo 22

Discussion: I have a simple question for those who have pitched.

The original question was is it more dangerous today to pitch than it was years ago. I have played this game as long as slow pitch has been around and fast pitch before that and I have pitched for most of that time. I do not think it is more dangerous today than before. A pitchers position has and will always be a more dangerous position simply because you are much closer to the batter. Its no different in the big leagues, pitchers get hit with shots and get hurt, simply because they are closer to the batter. I am also one who willnot wear all the protectivegear pitchers are starting to wear, but thats my choice and if I get hurt I had the option. I pride mysefl in the fact that I can play defense pretty good and I can back up when releasing the ball as far as I want and I do with some hitters. To pitch effectively you have to know the hitters and most good hitters will tell you that some pitchers are very effective and a major part of the defensive scheme. By the way pitchers, it never hurts to pray before walking to that mound either. You all have a great year. Wyo 22

Discussion: ROCK N RENO CUP- QUESTION

Hi Frank As I remember we played 3 round robin games with the 65 AAA,s and then we played the Bald Eagles the best two out of three for the championship. We won but by one run each game and in the bottom of the seventh. Great games. Once again when you play on that new facility you will want to return whenever you can cause it is beautiful. I hope we get some other 65 majors to enter online where they may be going this year. We will be in Reno regardless of who comes. Wyo 22

armiho211 The scrap iron 65,s will be in Reno. It is usually our first tournament of the year as we live in WINTER. Most of team is Colorado guys and I am in Cheyenne Wyo. You will truly enjoy this tournament, and the new fields in Sparks are fantastic.
Room rates are reasonable and food great. It is one of the biggest tournaments of the year however last year there were only two 65 major teams. I th;ink there will be a lot more this year now that the word is out on the new fields and how great they are. Talk them into it Frank they will love it. We stay at the Sands also ;and the rates are only $45 during the week and $60 I believe on the seekend. Our bracket starts on Tues. so you would have the cheaper rates. They do fill up th;ough so you better get your reseverations in. Phone number is 775-348-2242, ask for Leslie and she will take care of you. Hope to see you all there Wyo 22

Discussion: info on 65 major teams and where they intend to travel this year

c,mon you 65+ major teams. Surely some of you know what trounaments you are going to play this year. It would really be helpful if most teams would post where they intend to play as it may get other teams to commit or decide to play those tournaments if they are still deciding on where to go. I know that all teams probably do not read this message board, if anyone knows of those who do not try and pass the word along and maybe something positive could come of this post. Thanks Wyo 22
