Discussion: Combining M & M+

Major Plus is truly a joke. We play 60 M+. SSUSA has about 15 teams listed in this category in the country and I would bet most of them play limited schedules. We pay (have limited sponsorship) thousands of dollars as a team to go to a tournament to see the same 2, 3 or 4 teams and often are combined with the major teams.

Even the rules are a joke. They allow 9 run innings and limit the time. We rarely complete 7 innings.

If M and M+ were combined and played Major rules many of the Major teams could compete and the number of teams in a bracket would increase. Why this doesn't happen is beyond me but obviously the "powers that be" feel it makes sense.

I played in 5 Open World Tournaments when I was younger and it was a blast playing against the best. If you finished in the top 5 you felt that you had accomplished something. I get no satisfaction playing in a tournament with 3,4,5 teams. I have played competetive slowpitch softball for well over 40 years but this is going to be my last as a travel player. I have better ways to spend my money. I am sure there are many M+ players who disagree with this but this is one person's point of view

Discussion: Character

There was a point when readers on this message board could actually enjoy meaningful (softball related) discussions. It has now become little more than a forum for personal attacks. Most threads are hijacked and digress to the same old crap.
Speaking from a personal standpoint something I previously enjoyed I now rarely visit. If I wanted to watch (listen to) people argue I would turn on reality TV

Berger, while your comments may have caused others to complain about us I can assure you we were on the watch list. The pressure may have increased do the the comments on the message board. It is disappointing to be moved up without winning a world championship but it is what it is. One of our other players made a good point. Good teams might be better off playing only one qualifier and the world championships each year as it would reduce the number of tournaments won. Unfortunately if teams took that approach it would significantly reduce participation in most tournaments; and the lack of teams is already a problem in the Major and M+ levels. As John mentioned we do have an "old" 60's team (maybe an oxymoron)We have 6 players who could be playing 65's this year and we lost one of our better players earlier this year.
But as John also said we will look forward to competing at the M+ level. Hopefully we see you in Phoenix

bbullet we are now a member of your club. Master Collision was just moved up to Major Plus to join you guys. I think the timing was a bit unusual as it was after the "FINAL RATINGS" were out. I would imagine in was in response to some whining from other teams but who knows. We had won a number of tournaments however several were only attended by a few teams and they were not won in a dominating way.
That said my biggest complaint is that we will be stuck in a division where there are very few competing teams. Hopefully at some point the "powers that be" wake up and address this situation. We will not be playing in events that historically have had 2 or 3 teams compete so that will limit us to about 4 tournaments.
While I feel SSUSA overall is a good association I cannot for the life of me figure out why they continue to ignore the high number of comments related to this issue.

bbullet; just to clarify we have not won a TOC. We attended this year for the first time and did poorly. I too however scratch my head how you guys got bumped up this year.

Harry, Congrats on your win. We knew you were a lot better than you played in the East/West game and felt very fortunate to get past you in the double elims. You guys have a very good team and more importantly a great bunch of guys. We are planning to attend the TOC so we will see you there.

Discussion: What a way to go out!

Andy,
Whatever DE chooses to do all the best to you and your teammates.

Phoenix was another example that any good team can win on a given weekend and yes a number of teams were good enough to win in Phoenix. If you look through the double elimination scores nearly every team that finished well had a close call that could have send them to the losers bracket early. KC did a great job recovering from an early loss to come back and finish 2nd.

As John mentioned we (Master Collision) have had the same discussions that you have had. My concern is more the lack of teams in the M+. division. I have played there before and you end up seeing the same few teams every tournament. In my opinion there are not enough M+ teams to make that division viable (especially in the older age groups). I feel they need to combine the M and M+ divisions and play with Major rules. I know that is not popular with a lot of people and has been discussed here many times but I don't see any good alternatives.

Unfortunately whatever is done not every team in every division will be good enough to win a world tournament. If a player's primary objective is to win a ring, rather than just play to compete there will always be a lot of disappointment. When I was a youngster playing open ball for York Barbell very few teams went into a world tournament expecting to win unless you were Howard's, Campbells, Ken Sanders etc.(Larry L can relate) The ability to compete and occassionally beat one of the favored teams was what it was all about.

I have said it before and I will say it again; the ability to do what we do at our age is a blessing each time we step onto the field. I will continue to count those blessings wherever we play for as long as I can play.

I too would like to congratulate Double Edge and the KC Kids on a great tournament. We have enjoyed the competition with your teams all year. You are both class acts. Hopefully we will meet again in the future.

Don;
You are right on. Fran mentioned they may look at SoCal for the Cal Championships next year. Perhaps that would increase the participation. We are willing to travel for good competition but spending thousands of dollars as a team for a two or three team tourney is crazy. Hopefully the powers that be will do something to help this situation. I say that understanding it is not an easy fix but something really needs to be done.

Ken,
Thank you for your thoughts. Actually we have a sponsor but they do not pay any of our travel expenses. We play in 6-9 tourneys per year and all require travel as there are no tournaments in Colorado. Unfortunately this situation is becoming a major issue. There were only 3 teams in 60M in Lacey and now 2 in this tourney. If something isn't done soon the number of teams that travel will be reduced even more; especially Major and Major +. Seems that there are too many associations, too many levels, too many age brackets. There are enough teams to have some great tournaments. There needs to be a better communications vehicle for managers of teams in the various groups to communicate with each other to let them no which tourneys they are attending. I find very little satisfaction in winning a 2,3 or 4 team tournament. Just my thoughts.

Master Collision (60 Major) entered the Cal State Championships thinking there would be a number of teams participating. It is very disappointing to find that the NorCal Merchants are the only other team entered in this group. Are there any other 60+ teams still considering this tournament?

E-6. Some great points. Sorry you and a couple of your teammates had to leave early. Congrats on a great tournament. We always enjoy playing you guys always have very competetive games. That is why we play this game.

I thought Reno was the best and most well balanced tournament we have played in quite some time. A lot of very close games. We have a lot of respect for all of the teams that participated.

Andy, We have always enjoyed playing against your teams (Double Edge and Double Nickel). You guys are always competitive and they are always fun, competetive games. I know that you guys have no interest in playing down, that was a cheap shot.
Our 55 major team last year was probably better than our 60 team and we got our butts kicked in Phoenix. Hopefully this year we do better.
I feel we do have a very competitive division and the year will prove that out.
Best of luck to you the rest of the season. Stay healthy.

Yes we absolutely murdered teams in Reno. The first game of double elimination we beat Runner Blue by one run. We have played them 4 times this year and three of those games were decided by 2 runs or less. I guess they should be M+ also. Nor Cal also is every bit as strong as we are and the NM Dukes beat us in Mesquite. Most games in our first two tournaments have been very close (check the scores in Mesquite and Reno). There were at least 5 teams in Reno that could have won 60 Major. Dav Dowell acknowledged that when he handed out the awards.

Jyoji and Andy, both of your teams can play with us and you know it; we just happened to beat you that weekend. If you guys want sure wins you should drop down to AA. We were moved up a year ago and got murdered. If we do get moved up so be it. We will play hard and try to compete (without whining about it)

The fact that KC and MC are the best 60 teams in Denver and KC means absolutely nothing.
