Discussion: 2005 Louisville Warrior XXL Balance

I used the 26 oz balanced response all last year until thw World Tournament at Plano. I got a 26 oz balanced Warrior two weeks before Plano and liked it enough to use at the Worlds. I thought the ball jumped off better than the Blue Response. I had a good weekend with it and if I don't use the Catalyst then I will use the Warrior.

Discussion: Montgomery, Al. Tourney

Wondering if any 50 teams are planning to go to the SPA tournament in Montgomery, Al. March 20? We are thinking about going and would like some information about the format and if it is a well run tournament.

Discussion: Calling All Hitters

From what I am hearing the Catalyst is the most durable composite bat around. It has yet to be determined how hot it is. I hope it turns out to be a good lively bat with good durablity. It is crazy to have a bat break or dent with a few hundred swings. Bat companies do not want bat durability. They want you to buy as many bats as possible.

Discussion: Louisville Response XXL Balance Bat

I used the Response 26 oz balanced model all last year and I think it's one of the best metal bats around but not as good as the composite bats. I an switching to the Catalyst this year. I hope this bat is as good as the other top composite bats. We have heard that the Catalyst is very durable which for composite bats is very important. I am a singles hitter so all I'm concerned about is bat control and how quick the ball gets through the infield.

Discussion: Ultra II Beyond 2005

The Ultra should be illegal. Everyone who has swung this bat knows it is hotter than any other bat and there is no way it passes any bat test legally. It is bad for the game when 90% of the players in a tournament use the same bat. When the Ultra is illegal there are differeny bats being used. This bat is not very durable and is expensive. The main reason players want to use this bat is because it makes them the home run hitter they have never been or will ever be. If they continue to use this bat we will be hitting 40 core or lower balls and it won't matter what bats are legal. We do not need composite bats in the game we need to use good balls.

Discussion: BAT AND BALL RESTRICTIONS

The Ultra II should be banned. This bat is 20% better than any other bat. There is no way this bat is legal. I don't care what some test says. It is not good for softball when 90% of the players use this bat when it is legal. A player should not have to spend $300 for a new bat every 700 or 800 swings. Miken will do and pay anything they can to keep the bat legal because the rest of their bats are garbage.

Discussion: SPA Communications Conferences

Bruce you need to get in touch with Ridge because he has all the details. I know one is scheduled for Atlanta. You said you attended one two years ago. How did it go and did it have any results?

Discussion: SPA Communications Conferences

I see the SPA is planning 5 communications conferences to discuss playing rules, policies, tournament procedures and other senior softball related matters. Is this something worth going to and will it result in changes. This sounds like a good idea in theory. Let me know what you think and if you will attend.

Discussion: CHEATERS or NOT?

This also happened in the SSUSA World in Las Vegas. I know of two teams in th 55 division that picked up at least two quality players from from a team that won a world tournament this year. How is this possible? It's not fair to the other teams. I am sure this happens quite a lot. The tournament directors have the ability to stop this but they just care about getting that extra team in the tournament. SPA seems to come the closest to keep this from happening or I have not seen it. The senior game will die like open ball is doing if we don't address these problems.

Some associations take care of players better than others. SPA has all world first and second team with players from 1st thru 4th place and every team gets a teams MVP defense and offense metals to award.

Discussion: BAT AND BALL RESTRICTIONS

I have been involved with senior ball for the last three years and the biggest problem I see other than ratings is bat restrictions and ball types used at tournaments. I would like to know if you are in favor of restricting bats and using good balls or would you rather use any bat and use low core and low compression balls? I'll start with my opinion. I believe that composite bats are the big problem. The reason bat companies went to composite is because they had gone as far as they could with metal and all bats were close. The composite has opened up a can of worms and allowed companies to come in and charge big money for bats that don't last and forces softball associations and tournament directors to do what they have to to keep games scores down. They start messing with the ball. I would rather play with a good ball and bat restrictions than good bats and hit socks. The big boys hit a 40 and 36 core ball and while that sound like a joke I can remember when the idea of hitting a 44 core ball was a joke. I think all composite bats should be banned as shold all 44 core balls.

Discussion: Moving bases

Moving the bases back is a bad idea. I have played a lot of ball with the 70' bases and it cuts scoring down 30% or more. It would cut down scoring in seniors by more than that. Most seniors want this game to be more offensive than defensive.

Discussion: ratings

It's tough to rate teams when good teams are allowed to pick up good players from other good teams that didn't go to the tournament. I know there were many teams at Las Vegas that di exactly that. I was told that this was legal but I could not find it in the rule book. Whether tis is legal or not it is not right. It is not fair to the teams that played all year long with the same roster and then go to a world tournament and see this taking place. To me this is political B-S to make more money and shows the tournament director does not care about the players.

Discussion: ratings

I think the people who rate teams need more information about the teams they are rating. Why not have team evaluation forms for managers to fill out at the qualifier tournaments rating the teams they play in the tournament. We are a small group and the managers know most of the players and teams. Another problem we have are teams that were rerated lower during the season won quite a few world tournaments. I know of at least three teams that were rated lower right before the NSA World won the tournament. Those teams and players should be mandatory bumped up the next year. We need to rate players based on the number of world titles they win.

Discussion: SPA Plano

I am player/manager of Metro Star 50 AAA. This was the best senior tournament I have played in the three years I have been playing. This is a players tournament. Ridge does a great job with organizing the tournaments. Good balls, good fields, good umpires and the best awards I have evere seen. This is the way all world tournaments should be run. Congradulations to Segura Farms and Indiana Legends for there performance this past weekend. This should be the first world tournament on every teams list.

Discussion: SSWS World Series 50's AAA Division

Rabbit, I have never been to DesMoines but I have heard they put everyone together for the round robin and after those games are played they decide who plays in which division. The last two years I ahve heard complaints about higher class teams winning lower class divisions. I see the ISSA World was pretty competitive in the 50 AAA division. I'll see you next Wed. in Plano.

Check out the ISSA website seniorsoftball.org. They have all the results including the scores from the round robin and the double elimination. They updated the scores during the tournament. This is the best system I have seen for reporting the scores and results. All organizations should do this. I don't know much about computers but it should be pretty simple to do.

Discussion: Who Playing in the SPA Tourney in Plano TX in Sept

METRO STAR 50 AAA will be in Plano for the first time even though we lost our leadoff hitter and left fielder with a broken arm in our last inning of our last league tournament. We may not be the best team there but we will stand out.

Congratulations to Indiana Classics on your winning the 50 AAA title. You guys played great. The tournament was well run with great fields. It's too bad they have the NSA and USSSA Worlds on back to back weekends. World Tournaments need to be spaced out better especially the one's that are close to each other.
