Nov. 4, 2017 Duke | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Wind and Walks Dave and Staff, Great job deleting those other 2 responses, and not deleting the thread! Andy Smith, 65 Major, USED2BE |
Oct. 28, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: When did our generation become such cry babies Brock, I agree that the new Major division might take on the current Major rules for the home run, OR go to a 1 up and an out. Of course, Major Plus teams would not like the "OR" suggestion. If this is going to work, then there has to be changes made to the home run rule, to make it more enticing for the Major teams that do not hit more than 0 to 1 home run per game. Otherwise, too many Major teams will just reform or drop out. If it were me, I would leave AA as it is and add 20% of the AAA to the AA division and 20% to the Major division. I would take 15% of the Major teams and move them to AAA. I would combine the remaining Major teams with the current Major Plus teams. Or something along these lines. It is my opinion, that if you do not institute the 1 up and an out for the home run rule in each division, this will NEVER work out. Also, I think this might be best changed with the 65 or maybe 70 and older age groups, which differs from my previous message. Lastly, if you do not agree to these home run rules, then Major Plus will just continue to play in very small brackets. SSUSA is not going to rock the boat, as they are from a business standpoint, very successful the way it stands. And now comes the Major Plus disagreement regarding the home run rule, lol! Hey, at least I did not say to use the current AA home run rule, which is 1 home run per game, then an out. I would be fine with that too. LOL! Oct. 25, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: When did our generation become such cry babies These 50 AAA teams in an SSUSA tournament cannot dictate who can play or not play. It seems to me, that some of these directors need to be replaced, if this is occurring. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Oct. 25, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: When did our generation become such cry babies Question: "When did our generation become such cry babies?" Answer: For many decades!! LOL!! As you progress into the older age group(60/65 and older), there are just not enough teams to make it worthwhile to play as a Major Plus team in a tournament, where too often 3 or less teams attend. Almost always in the smaller tournaments. You end up playing the same teams over and over at the highest level. Absolutely boring, time consuming, and too expensive. Better to meet half way with the 3 or less teams and play 2-3 games and have a BBQ. There have been suggestions on how to increase this division. The only reasonable and feasible one in my opinion, is to realign the 4 levels of play into 3 levels. Just My Humble Opinions, Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Oct. 23, 2017 Duke | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: I am confused re: the rating system.!!!!!!!!!!!! Although Bostonian is rated AAA now, Bostonian did win a TOC berth and will be playing in that tournament as 70 Major. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Oct. 23, 2017 Duke | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: I am confused re: the rating system.!!!!!!!!!!!! garyheifer, Well, it is possible that they both had a very poor rest of the year. Also, at the tournament that you mentioned for these 2 teams, Bostonians had a negative 22 run differential after 5 games or -4.4 run differential per game. And, the Windsor Chiefs had a plus 2 run differential after 5 games, which equates to a positive .4 runs per game. On top of that, they were the only 2 teams in their division. There could be other reasons, that we are not aware of. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Oct. 19, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 73-74 PLAYING WITH A 75 TEAM just joe, January 11, 2017 to: "...amend the age 75+ age division underage player exemptions, effective with the commencement of the 2018 Season, to be limited to five players, all of whom must be age 74." Oct. 16, 2017 Duke | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: Looking for a strong defensive SS for the upcoming season! We are an established 65 Major team located in Southern California. We would like to add a SS with a great glove and strong arm. Hitting is secondary, but a definite plus. If you think you fit this criteria, I can be reached by email at dukela4@aol.com. Thank you, Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Oct. 16, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Purging the ratings list? There have been many teams that have not played for several years as well as duplicates. SSUSA has eliminated some of them over the years, but may not know all the teams that do not exist? You are correct, that it would be a good idea to clean this up. I am from the west, and have no clue about this regarding the eastern teams, but I would bet the same issue. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Sept. 18, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Vegas Brackets Curveball, Too funny!! CallaVett, Assuming both pods are at the same fields, it would most likely be that Dave would either take the first half of the teams listed, OR take the odd numbered teams listed into one pod and the even numbered teams into the other pod. If the 2 pods are located at different fields, then Dave would probably keep the Western versus Eastern teams in the same pod for the National championship game. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Sept. 18, 2017 Duke | Topic: Bats Discussion: Carrying bat Dave, I can think of one more situation regarding carrying your bat. What is the penalty for hitting a home run and carrying your bat with you as you watch the ball go over the fence, then pick up your glove and take your bat with you to right field on defense? LOL!! Reading some of these responses is hilarious!! Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Aug. 18, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: SSUSA question Before someone asks the next question, I would add one more thing to this discussion. What the staff said is correct, as long as the 55 Major player is not one of the 55 Major team's allowable Major Plus players. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
Aug. 6, 2017 Duke | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Need a ruling Depending on the angle of the ball approaching the tree limbs and height of the tree, an umpire judgement might cause some disagreements. All you need to do is have a ground rule for this situation. In my opinion, either a ground rule double or a ground rule home run, but not an umpire judgement. JMHO, Andy Smith, 65 Major |
June 30, 2017 Duke | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Thrown Ball "Out Of Play" HAT MAN, As lb16 has pointed out, different organizations might word this issue as 1 plus 1. SSUSA words it as runner advances 2 bases from the time it left a fielder's hand. The actual reading of the rule from the SSUSA rule book Rule 8.4(10)D, "When the ball is in play and is overthrown(beyond the boundary lines) or is blocked. EFFECT: All runners will be awarded two bases, and the award will be governed by the positions of the runners when the ball left the fielder's hands. If two runners are between the same bases, the award is based on the lead runner." Now HAT MAN, to answer your question regarding tagging up and going back to 2B, the runner gets home, because he already started from 2B(this is similar to what stick8 commented on, with the batter being at home plate, where the batter gets 2B) , whereas the 1 plus 1 rule, might be interpreted differently, and runner may only get 3B. For SSUSA, this can be found on pages 48 & 49 of their rule book. The only thing that I would add to what stick8 said about an overthrow from an infielder is "......however, if all runners, including the batter-runner, have advanced at least one base when the infielder makes the wild throw, on the first play after a pitch, the award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the wild throw was made." Hope this explains it more clearly. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
June 30, 2017 Duke | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Thrown Ball "Out Of Play" lb16, you are correct, but generally, it is not usually referred to as 1 plus 1 any more. Just 2 bases at the time of release from the fielder. The only rare play, that I have seen 3 times in 47 years of playing, is when the batter hits the ball to an infielder and fumbles the ball around, then decides to throw the ball to first, when the batter has already reached 1B. In this rare situation, the batter-runner would get 3B. As you stated, all based on where the runners are at the time of the release. Andy Smith, USED2BE, 65 Major |
March 3, 2017 Duke | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: 65 Major/AAA players for March 11-12 in Hemet Hey Guys, I have several injured players and need at least 2 65 Major/AAA players for March 11-12. I prefer 2 outfielders, but would be happy with any 2 65 Major/AAA players right now. If there is a 65 Major Plus player looking to play, I can add 1. Could use any help. Thank you in advance. We are a new team this season. You can respond to this message, or email me at dukela4@aol.com. Thank you, Andy Smith, 65 Major |
Jan. 27, 2017 Duke | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Penalty for offensive intereference The rule B.J. quoted is self explanatory. Runners on 1B and 3B and there is interference called on the runner from 1B to 2B, and in the umpire's opinion it negated the double play, then dead ball out, double play, and runner that scored, goes back to 3B, unless he was forced to go, which means the bases were loaded. Now, if you change the situation a bit, the outcome could be different. Same original setup as above, but the shortstop or second baseman field the ball and the out is recorded at 2B and interference is called with the runner from 1B going to 2B, but the shortstop or second baseman is clearly throwing home for the double play and would have had the runner out at home. How many times have you seen that occur? In that situation, I would call the runner out at 2B and home, and the batter is safe. That is not covered by the rule that B.J. quoted, unless there is more to that rule. That is the way I would call it. I did not look it up, but I could be wrong on the second situation? Jan. 21, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: new ratings in December BTW, looking at what softball4b posted at the top of this discussion, it apparently lists your team as attending the TOC. Looking at the list of teams that SSUSA provided, your team apparently is not listed, and if you won no tournaments, then you should not be listed. Therefore, it could be an error made by SSUSA or a team with a similar name? Andy Smith |
Jan. 21, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: new ratings in December Other than the TOC issues discussed previously, you can be moved up or moved down based on your run differential. 5.0 or more, they can move you up. If your run differential was negative or thereabouts, they could move you down. All irregardless of your wins and losses. Like titanhd stated, SSUSA has no problem moving you back up to Major. Just have to make a simple call up to their office to discuss. Andy Smith |
Jan. 18, 2017 Duke | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: new ratings in December Islandryder, This can happen with the TOC tournament coming up soon in Florida. A team's rating will be changed to what they were when they won a qualifying TOC tournament. After the tournament, then they are put back to where they were moved to prior to that tournament. This is assuming that they are attending the TOC in February. This is the most likely answer to your question. Andy Smith |
