Discussion: Texas State Championship-2013

We have a softball complex (Kennedy) in San Antonio that has four (4) fields with 300' fences, The senior games for softball are scheduled to be played there on April 6th & 7th, I would think in the future one of the assocation (SPA or SSUSA) would book it for a qualifier.
Softball complex (For rental, contact SAASA at 210-590-0350).
Note: If four (4) fields are not enough, Alvo Jo Fisher could accomdate the 65's, 70's, & 75's.

Discussion: Reclassifying Teams

In 2012, our teamn played in the mens 60's AAA division, in the two (2)tournaments that we played, in which SSUSA posted scores, we were 2-4 in bracket games (I don't consider the seed games as an indicator of a team's strength or weakness). Our run differntial was +9 in our two (2) wins and a -34 runs in our four (4) losses, our appeal was denied to be rated as a AA team. We lost seven (7) players (starters) from our 2012 team. We wiil have a team in 2013 but we will not be as strong as we were in 2012. I believe that the formula that SSUSA is currently is using to rate teams needs to be revised to reflect a team's true level of competiveness, we would like to be able to compete when we go to a major tournament.

In South Texas we are fortunate to have decent weather, thus allowing our league to hold open practices on Monday's, Wednesday's, & Friday's all year long. We have one rule on temperature, if it is less than 40 degrees, stay home. What about other leagues, do you have open practices throughout the year?

Is there any flexibility in the new team rating rule, for instance if you have group of guys from your league team that would like to play some tournaments but you know that you are a AA team, why would your team automatically be rated AAA?
I know that there are some tournament purist will comment to the effect, why not recruit better players, I would respond "these are guys that make up our team and they are the players we want to compete with".

Discussion: One more time on 1 and 1 count

Our league (SASSL), we have 50's, 60's, 65's, 70's, & 75's divisions. We are currently using the 0-0 pitch count and over the years we have used the 1-1 pitch count, but we seem to always go back to 0-0 pitch count. I agree I would like to see games go a full 7 innings, the 1-1 count may speed up the game enough to allow that. I am in favor of a courtesy foul.
Capt
Note; We have some exception to our rules, like allowing 11 defensive players for 70's+, why not allow the 40's, 50's, & 55's team use the 1-1 pitch count.

I reviewd the 2013 tournament schedule from SSUSA and currently the Houston Sportsplex complex is called out as a Tentative Field for the 2013 Texas State Championship.

My suggestion on where the 2013 Texas State Championship should be played, survey the players. We had appox. fifty teams that played in the 2012 Texas State Championship, that is good sample size for a survey,
I just responded to a survey from SSUSA on the whether I support or oppose the 1-1 pitch count.

Jack, I know that when we played in Reno and Las Vegas at Big League Dreams we used our Ultra's, I guess each location can dicate their on policies on bats, to bad.

Discussion: Texas State Championship-2013

If scheduling would be an issue, I believe there are only three (3) fields at League City, I would suggest scheduling the Texas State Championship on back to back weekends. The 60's, 65's, & 70's teams would play Friday-Sunday the first weekend and the 40's, 50's, & 55's play the following weekend.
Capt
Note: Or we could start on Tuesday and finish on Thursday for the 65's, 70's, & 75's teams, and starting the 40's, 50's, 55's, & 60's teams on Friday and finishing on Sunday.

League City has a big league dreams softball complex, can't go wrong playing on those fields. If you want to draw more teams, this would be an ideal complex to bring in more teams from other states. I am sure it is more expensive to play there but in the long run it would payoff.
