I can tell you that I've seen first hand the same problems with altered bats that HIJ has. It's a problem with no easy solution. Yes the associations offer remedies and avenues of resolve, but if you don't have $100-$300 to throw away everytime you suspect a problem, that's it.

I can usually hear the shaved bats. They have a different cracking sound when hit. Or the teams who all use the same bat during a game...that's a sign.

I do think the umpires should have more to say about it. If you hear it, have them put it away....simple.

BTW-If you have to swing a shaved bat to compete, you better go find another game...there's always ping pong.....

I'm sure this will shake a few people up.

Gentlemen:

We will be having 2-3 tournaments here in Orange County, CA in 2009. They will be qualifiers. We are in hope that 1 will be a Wooden Bat Tournament, open age groups, 40's, 50's, 60's etc. They will be non-conflicting with other large tourneys.

You can e-mail me, oldschoolmasters@yahoo.com for more details and interest. I should have dates secured by early January.

Have a happy and safe holiday!

Lecak doing a "naked" check in? That's a bad mental picture and just way to much baldness for me...

I have to add this one...it's something I truly believe:

Interesting comments.

Something that hasn't been mentioned here: This could call for teams having to be revamped. How many AB's in the average game...4-5? If you're allowed, let's say 6 HR's, then you need guys that can basehit and hit them out. The design here seems to be the elimination of teams that only hit HR's. This rule will make the selection process for these manager's change a bit.

I like hitting the longball as much as the next guy but I see this as more of an equalizer.

I personally think the field lights have alot to do with it. It's hard for me to pickup the ball at dusk as well, but some of the fields we play on don't have the type of lighting that works with a fast moving ball.

Difficult to find what's best 100% of the time...maybe we could stay young and still know what we do now...hahaha!

My turn...

I knew this topic would bring out many comments and opinions.

As a manager, my first responsibility is to the team. One rotten apple spoils the barrel....nothing could be more true. If I have a player who has a problem, i.e. drunk, wasted, physically injured or just plain can't get his mind on the game, that player is ridin' the pine...period. If you don't make that move you risk the whole team...you lose your players respect which means you will probably not be successful nor will the team. I've been on both sides of this fence.

My rules & requests are simple:

1. Show up to the park prepared and ready/willing to play.
2. No drinking during the tournament. If you need to drink, I'm sure there's a saloon somewhere that has a place for you. Besides...I will buy you a beer after the tourney...if you're thirsty!
3. Conduct yourself as a gentleman at all times...this one can be tough.
4. If you have a problem with me, do not call me out in front of the team....if you do I promise you I will send you packing and leave you in the dust.

I try my best to apply these rules to myself as well as the team. The last thing you need is these problems, especially when you're 500-1000 miles away from home playing in a big tournament.

Hats off to you, Coachron, for making a tough but necesarry decision.

This is something that should be considered at SS Worlds next year....and I've seen Rick Perez and Steve Imlay hit as well. What a pleasure it was to play on the same team as these two men.

Fun times.

Discussion: BAN THE ULTRA

Pesonally, I can't see banning any of the senior bats available to us. They are part of the draw to Senior Softball. My thought is if these bats were banned there would be alot more players doing things like...shaving bats.

I'm very much against shaving bats, but I always use the hottest legal bat allowed to a tourney. Just my humble opinion.

Hey, Bashbro: I managed to get on your site. It's great. I lived in Buckley and Puyallup over 20 years ago. I miss it there. Great country. I get back whenever I can.
