Topic: Bats
Discussion: Talk regarding illegal bats

cal50,
It is extremely naive to think it is a rarity for bat modification to be occuring. Labels and paint mean nothing, they can be purchased as part of the process, icluding the BPF label.

Rolling is a norm and I will guarantee you a teammate(s) on your team has a name and number of someone who rolls bats. But that's mild alteration, and personally, even as a pitcher it doesn't bother me. But what does bother me is the number of shaved or pressure injected bats I see regularly at tournaments. Do we know for certain, no we don't unless we cut them in half. But what's that saying, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, well you know the rest. You see-
1) There are more bat doctors now than ever
2) I've seen rolling machines in the parking lot
3) I know that there are some teams that have a "tournament" bat bag and the regular assortment of individual bats
4) Tight fisted pitches hit 320 feet with just a sneeze? Saw the pos in half...

There is rarely a fair softball game played in a big tournament with only stock issued equipment, and that's the truth. Not only with the young guys, but also with the seniors. Their just hasn't been a cost efficient way to stop it yet, or either the willingness to do so. We got signed statements required for the pitchers who won't wear the hockey gear as the solution for now. Really??

Quack, quack...

One things is for sure, it doesn't matter as much which bat is used if it's shaved or otherwise altered.
I saw more altered bats this last weekend than I have in 9 years. Something has to be done about the cheating that occurs, it's more rampant than most will ever admit.

Discussion: Who is the team to beat this year?

canljack,
Bingo Long and the Travelling All-Stars.....was made partially in Macon, Ga.

One of the Florida Classics (50+) players, Joe Hicks, was in the movie, he lived in Macon at the time and played catcher in the movie along side Richard Pryor, Billy Dee, James Earl Jones, and more.

And who played "Rainbow"? Otis Day, of Otis Day & the Knights....yes, Animal House, that Otis Day...

Have a good Friday....

Discussion: Best Outfielder-in your opinion

Hands down, an unknown to some in Major ball - Ira Turner, LC, Florida Classics, Jacksonville, FL. Best defensive player, has all the tools, arm, judgement, speed, accuracy, and consistency. His love for the game shows on the field, played in the recent TOC All Star game. Played pro baseball in the KC Royals organization as an outfielder and first baseman in AA.

Discussion: Rosters

Guys it's extremely discouraging that Rosters are not made public. There is no rational reason or barrier to not make them public.

SSUSA, put everything in the open, make them public online, remove all questions, and allow for possible corrections when they are needed.

We all want a level playing field, and when you see a pickup player that you were denied, be able to be picked up by another team, that doesn't meet the rule criteria for picking up players, you have to ask why. You have to ask how....except we are all used to seeing this happen too often.

It's time to show complete and open transparency. Published rosters lead to nothing but fairness, and we all deserve to play by the same rules.

Wood,
Thoughtful post, well put. Those are things that really count, and like you, love the game, love to compete. But the relationships and camaraderie formed with people you meet and share with, that's the best benefit of all.

Thanks for the reminder...

Olden Slow and Wood....points well taken, understand the thought process.

And if I haven't said it enough, I will now. Thank you Florida Half Century, thank you, thank you, thank you for some sanity with league play. Unlimited home runs, unlimited runs per inning, and yes, a 1-1 count.

Did I say thank you yet? Thank you FHC....

Discussion: 1-1 count no extra foul tourney

Wes, I understand what you are saying, but does 9 years of playing 1-1 once or twice a month count for anything? Let's see that's about an extra 400+ innings of experience with the effects of the 1-1 count. Think the SSUSA vote count would have been the same if EVERYONE had 9 years experience playing the 1-1 count? Not hardly.....

Discussion: 1-1 count no extra foul tourney

The notion that the 1-1 count does not speed up the game is folly. It's just pure math for those who skipped that class. We don't need to drop an apple more than once to prove gravity, it's going to happen no matter the opinion, and the same can be said for the 1-1 count as it saves time and overall increases the number of team at bats per game. Florida Half Century has many years of using this successfully.

The SSUSA vote is already cast, and the old guys who should be concerned that Father Time never loses a battle, obviously had a temporary lapse in adequate blood flow and chose a playing option that reduces the number of times they will now come to the plate in their lifetime. Go figure....

At the same time I agree with a lot of the sentiment here, we can't just blindly say "let's just be happy to play" when the opportunities to make the game better present themselves.

A big thanks to SSUSA for allowing this board to function with open opinions. Now, can we have a blood pressure check for those over 60 before we vote again on the 1-1?

Discussion: Reclassifying Teams

Beasley,
Of course I'm not comparing FHC to SSUSA, but I'm not going to see ANY of those top FHC teams in AAA either.
SSUSA disagreed with you and denied FAS a return to AAA from the Major rankings in their recent appeal.

But they will play in their 3rd consecutive TOC AAA tournament, after winning 3 AAA Nationals, and 2 TOC AAA Nationals. Not whining here, you play who they put in front of you. It's a little hard to explain to players....

BTW, you guys when you have a full team Team 1 has a really good group. We played you in the SPA 2012 at Jax and lost...

All the best to you guys this year....

Beasely,
Still think FAS is a AAA team? Then FHC should be interesting this year.... Let's see what are the FHC rankings in Jan 2013. 1. Good Times 2. Blast, 3. Hollis, 4. Team 1, and 5.Florida Automated Shade...

Trust me, there's nothing AAA about that group...

Discussion: Reclassifying Teams

SSUSA, Thanks for your patience. OK think I got it,
FAS team won a National in AAA, which qualified them for a 2011 TOC AAA event, and they won the 2011 TOC in AAA and remained rated as a AAA team.

Then they won ANOTHER National in AAA the next year which qualified them for the 2012 TOC, and they won the 2012 TOC AAA tournament for the second year in a row.

Then before they are re-rated to Major, they win ANOTHER National in AAA 10 months later, which now qualifies them for the 2013 TOC AAA event, and have the luxury of playing AAA teams in the 2013 TOC, a tournament they have won the last two years.

Imagine the reaction of telling that story to players.

SSUSA, I still don't get it with Florida Automated Shade and your response.

They win the TOC in 2011 and 2012 in AAA. By your own records they are denied a move back to AAA in Jan 2012, which means they were rated Major at that time and previous and all thru this last year with no rating change. So any tournament they won would have been as a Major team in 2012.

But they are playing AAA again in the TOC? Please lay out the timeline so we can all understand, we don't.

Is it possible to win the AAA TOC tournament two years in a row 2011 & 2012, be moved and play the 2012 year in Major, and yet for 2013 play in the TOC AAA for the third year in a row?

SSUSA, how does this happen?

Discussion: Best Pitcher

Webbie,
It was a good thread, you get to compare some opinions, and learn about some players you may not know.

Full Monty, Snot Nose, All I said was I didn't care about listing the women pitchers. There was a time when I did as I coached a travelling team of women and played/coached a travel team of men. But that time has passed.

Full Monty,
Yes, you would be correct, "I don't give a rats azz about the women that play senior softball."
You see, none of them play on my team.
