Discussion: Thank You Ken

Most of my best times in senior softball came while playing for Ken and I want to thank him for all he did for our teams and for senior softball.

You will be missed.

Discussion: Midwest Championships - WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR $495.00 ENTRY FEE

I cannot play again this year because of shoulder replacement surgery May 4th (I wonder if next year I will still be considered an impact player two knees and a shoulder should get me off that list and there is a list trust me on that) so my thoughts might not be worth the time it took me to write this.

I find this amazing because at one time this tournament was thought to be held in KC. Had it been in KC you would have played on 10 field that can with stand large amount of rain and still play with in two hours of it stopping. The city does not make decisions for Mid Am they do that. Had it been in KC this past two weeks you would have had a great weekend to play with one morning of rain (it did not stop the tournament that was going on), a nice week prior to last weekend (with a little rain but still play went on), and a great place to play.

I wonder why more tournaments do not come to KC? Anyway just my thoughts. I have to do something to feel involved so don't take this as I am against the upper midwest but we do have great ballparks here in KC and really we are nice people.

Discussion: Is THE ball or... having enough balls.

I have not been on here in a while and I see things have not changed much. So let me add this brief update and maybe it will bring reality back to this discussion.

First the manager of the KC Barons Brett Swanson has suffered two mini strokes since last Thursday and is in a hopital here in the KC area awaiting a test on Monday that could not be done over the weekend because they have to have a surgery team ready just in case the test causes problems.

Brett is not concerned what ball or bat is being used at the current moment and I am sure if things improve and he can play again he will not be to concerned about the ball and bat then either. He will just be happy he can play ball again.

Second and not that important I had my left shoulder replaced on May 4, 2009 and that makes both knees and a shoulder in the past year. I don't if I will ever play again. Not sure it is worth it but I can tell you this right now the ball and bat issue is not even on the radar. Just playing the game again would be nice is what I am worried about. So what is my point.

Honestly guys this is trival compared to what can happen. Instead of arguing about this we should just be happy we can play and let the rest of this stuff sort itself out. The ball is not that bad and I would think again if this ball brought the game back to where it was with no HR limits and PPR it would be the right thing for the game.

Brett I hope will be back soon with a clear bill of health. Me I am not to sure about. Enjoy the season everyone and maybe I will back next year.

Bob, I wish I was kidding but I am not. It happened again last year and I will bet money that once my name shows up on a roster (if it does) it will happen again this year. Somethings never change.

Discussion: 55 Major Plus

Don,
Please do not take this wrong but if you are allowed to do that then I would say I have a real complaint.

I was told last year and this I could not play Major at the 50+ level because I played Major plus in SPA in 2007. Now remember I am someone who is turing 60 this year with two knee replacements and I do not think I am a Major Plus impact player at the 50 age level or any age level anymore. Yet because of that 2007 tournament I am told I cannot play below Major Plus, I am an impact player ( I have only played two tournaments since that 2007 tournament) and in 2007 the one player was in affect that year.

So I guess my questions would be why am I being told I am an impact player still? Why is a whole team allowed to play Major after they have played Major Plus in SPA and in the same age group? Is the one player you pick up for SPA now an impact player? I could go on but I think I made my point. Once again I have nothing a against your team doing it I just think the rules should be the same for everyone. If your team can do this then I should be able to do it.

This is one of the reason I have not renewed my card as of yet. Why spend the $50 when I am never allowed to play?

Hitit I am not in an authoritative position but if I am wrong then I will come on here and admit it but if I am right will you come on here and admit I am right about the ball change? It is coming. It was not really being thought of before but it is now.

Joe once again you miss the point or you just do not want to see the forest for the trees. First of all the WE is the 100+ seniors that tested the ball here in the midwest and who would rather go to that ball and THE SENIOR BATS (I have only said that in every post) than to have the rules changed every year and some years twice. This We is also a group of senior out west that believe we should go to this ball.

The WE is also the 100+ none senior players who know that this is the wave of the future (some being this year) and would rather use this ball and any 1.20 bat instead of having to buy many different ones. So Joe this WE IS NOT JUST ME!!!!!!

Last but not least what it really comes down to is this one fact. This is a PRIVATE ASSOCIATION that is owned by two people. They will make the rules as they see fit and do as they see fit my playing status is a great case in point. So in my opinion I see it this way the only way to get rid of the homerun rules you don't like, the DBO rule you don't like and keep the bats you and most everyone does like is to be willing to go to a ball that all the associations will be using or considering by 2010 before then we try to broker a deal that the game goes back to the old rules and YET KEEP THE SENIOR BATS.

I was talking to someone today from the west coast who informed me that I believed this message board was about trying to get things done, talk softball, and just connect but the fact is this is really just a board to complain about rules and do nothing to improve the game. He was right. Audieh and Curt I am sorry for voicing my opinion and doing my best to wake people up to what is really coming. I probably ruin the thread.

I am out. Have fun and good luck to all this year.

Joe what we found is that if you hit the ball flat and not up you will get a nice linedrive base hit. I believe if you hit this ball you would be surprised. But my point is not to promote the ball my point is to say I would rather go back to the way the game was played (with the senior bats) and if that means using this ball now then so be it. We will be using this ball or a ball like it very soon so lets stop changing the game and go to the ball.

Lecak, point about watching what you wish for is also simple. I played Major Plus when Smith had his team and everyone hated him (why we have regional rules the real problem with the number of major plus teams but no one wants to admit it). So they changed the rules to get rid of teams like that.

Now add these new rules to increase teams which it may and what do you think will happen if the old guard starts losing again? I expect another rule change would be in order.

I for one am tired of yearly rule changes but then again what can one expect from a privately owned association. Truth is we can bitch all we want this is a private association and they will do as they please.

PS the ball is not that bad. We have hit it here in KC with every bat you can think of in every weather condition you can think of and everyone seems to like it that has hit with us. All would perfer to hit this ball and take them game back to the way it was than to do what we are doing now.

Discussion: Somebody needs to say it!

The name of this thread is "Somebody Needs To Say It."
Well that is just what I intend to do. I agree with the most of the posts and I would also say this I would love for things to be as they were but THEY ARE Not AND WILL NOT BE ANYTIME SOON. So it looks like to me we have three choices.

One, boycott this association which is not going to happen. No matter who says what everyone will still show up and play. Some because it is all they have and the others because to play ball. A few will not play SSUSA but the majority will.

Two, come on here and be hard headed old men about what we want and don't want. Cry and complain about who is behind this and what is the real intent. Joe I understand your point of view but I would suggest to you that like the record you refer to that shows there are no more injuries with the current bat/ball combo there is no record to prove the powerful elite group of players admins and marketeers are behind this.

Is it true that the Major + group wants more teams? yes and they should watch what they wish for but are they behind the homerun rule change, bat/ball combo change, and the dbo? I doubt it. It would not be in their best interests. I would suggest it has more to do with the SSUSA wanting the number of teams to go up (SSUSA staff you should really consider this before you do it. It did not work for the USSSA and they assume they are as strong as you and yet their numbers are declining in slowpitch), the insurance carrier, and the threat of lawsuits in this lawsuit happy world that we live in.

Three, stop bastardizing the game and just admit what has to happen for us to have the game the way it was. We want these bats. We do not want the ASA bats or the USSSA bats. No we want our own bats (I like them too). So if we want the bats we so desire and we want the game to go back to the way it was then we are going to have to change the ball. I know it is not popular but rather we like it or not this change is coming so lets just do it, stop complaining about it and everything else, practice a little more, and get the game back to the way it was.

BOTTOMLINE if ASA, and USSSA are changing the ball standard (which they are) and we do not then when someone sues this association or any other senior association they will win in court because ASA and USSSA are changing for safety concerns and thus that will trump the we prefer a good bat and ball combo every time.

If we do not change the ball to that which is coming then we will be stuck with these rules forever and yes they suck. So I say change the rules back SSUSA, keep the senior bats, and go to the 52/275 ball that you will be going to before long. Lets stop bastardizing the game, complaining and just play ball the way it use to be.

I know I will get flamed over this but that is ok. Someone had to say it.

Yes Bob I did have it done on Dec 15. It was nasty and I needed it done. I hope to be playing soon.

I know that here in KC we don't have very many options so I can see us playing all associations and the SSUSA being the worst. I can tell the Staff at SSUSA this there sample base for the over the fence homerun outs is flawed not only by the number of teams at the tournament they used but at the time it was held. I would bet my house that if each tournament was sampled and reported correctly the number will become much higher.

Many of the midwest teams will hit just as many homeruns outs per game as they do homeruns and it does not have anything to do with bat control. Weather condition here will be the main problem. Unlike the west coast we deal with major wind on a daily bases. Add the dead ball out to the mix and the game is no fun anymore.

We will sour very fast of these rules. While that is not a great concern of the SSUSA because our numbers are small I would bet it will be a plus for at least two other associations. Maybe that is what is needed to even things out.

I would submit that none of these rules would be necessary if we just went to Kevin's new ball. The game would be played the way it use to be. I know that is not a popular thought but if we don't what is next ground balls and linedrives at the third and firstbasemen being called DBO? Safety concerns will rule the day rather we like it or not.

Kevin I hope you are right. I tooks some living room swings at the 6 week mark and it was not good.

Charlie, Mongo had to go. He was not PC. The left one is great but the right is way behind. I was also told it may be time for me to retire from working so we have begun the paper work. It will be nice to be off all the timebut I will miss chase. If things go well maybe we will see you in GA.

Mike that is very interesting and not a bad idea. I just hope a team does not get moved up based on only one player. But the idea is not bad.

Larry only time will tell how much I can play. If I had to play today it would not be happening. The doc says it will be as good as new and I believe him but since he had to cut out so much extra bone it will take some time. Hope to see you also.

I know I said I would not post anymore but I cannot pass this one up. Brain how can you say the Barons are sandbaggers when they allow a 60 year old with two replacement knees to play?
Brain I know you were kidding but I thought I would throw that out there so those in charge would think about what they are doing before they consider a bump.

Joe I would think the LVSSA would be a good argument in your favor because what was used to make the ruling on me was my participation in the SPA tournament last year 2007 the only tournament I played in.

Tate and Einstein,
Welcome to my world. I had knee replacement surgery this year and have not played anything above league this summer and that only started in Aug. I have not played in the SSUSA for two years now and only one tournament with the Mavericks last year the SPA Worlds and the manager of the 50+ Major team here is KC was told he could not add me to the roster even though I have been on the rosters all year.

I will be able to play 60+ next year and I am wonder why I should spend the money to renew my card if this is the type of stuff I will deal with every year that I try to play. I tried to tell my coach at the beginning of the year that I would never be allowed to play Major ball and had I not had the Knee replacement surgery and been able to play I bet the KC barrons would have been forced up to Major Plus. So enjoy the retirement list guys because it is really no fun.

If you are hitting 44/375 softballs then it will take a lot longer to break in. 44/525 or 47/525 will get it broke in faster.

If you have a 13 inch model then it will take 200 to 300 swings to start the break in period. If you have a 10 inch model it should take around 400+. One of the things Kevin was worried about with this bat is that people would give up on it too soon. This bat is made to be as hot as the Grey model but last a whole lot longer so it will take more swings to break in. The two I have are as hot as any Grey Combat I have ever owned.

First Gary each team that plays in the Black World is allowed to pick up two players that do not have to be black if I remember the rule correctly.

Second I do not condone what you say Joe wrote but reallly what did you think would happen as you just kept turning the knife?

I talked to someone on one of the boards that know you and he said you like to stir the sh-t and for us not to take your ramblings to heart. Well, while that is fine and good you can and have gone way to far on many of your posts.

Lastly, while this might now be the place I do have a question for you (this should not matter to you because you do this all the time). Your are always talking about using someone else R+D when you talk about our senior bats. So am I to assume when you play softball you do not use a bat or hit a ball? Because if you do then are you not using someone elses R+D?

Gary,
First you really need to leave Mike's son out of the posts. That is a street I would suggest you don't go down. Mike loves his children very much and loves to have them at the tournaments to watch him play as do most of us. There is nothing better than to hear you child or grand child yell for you. So let that one go.

Second Mike hit with a metal bat and hit it as good as anyone with the composites but as he said he had to go to the newer bats because of a hip problem which he has had replaced and unless you have had that or a knee done then you really don't know anything about the why and wherefor of what guys do to keep playing. I was playing with Mike and we had to force him to switch to the U2 when his hip went bad. He has played in more pain than you will ever know. and pain that would put most people on the sidelines but his love of the game kept him going. So once again let it go this is really not the post for you everyday rants. Which by the way if you notice the bat he used is legal so why should he or anyone use a lesser bat?

Now Mike I heard clear back here in KC how you hit this past weekend. I have seen it many times but I understand it was a impressive show. Nice job my friend. I was hoping to see you at the SSUSA worlds but with the other knee needing replaced and another loop hold being used to keep me from playing I will not be there but I hope to hear you do as well or better in that tournament.
