Discussion: 60 Major (Nebraska) Seeking Potential Players

Thanks to all of you who have emailed expressing interest in joining our team. We appreciated all the inquiries and the impressive resumes.

Several of you commented on our team chemistry and composition or level of play through observation of tournaments we competed in and we were humbled by the nice words. Thank you!

Our squad got together yesterday to discuss our game plan for 2019 and we are going to combine forces with another team in a similar prediciment as ours. They are just down the road which makes things a bit easier logistically.

On behalf of the Nebraska 60s, our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season to you and your families.

Sincerely, Chuck

Discussion: 60 Major (Nebraska) Seeking Potential Players

Our team has lost a few players off the roster and we are retooling for the 2019 season but we're short a few players.

We have played as the Nebraska 60s the past few years and looking for good teammates and ballplayers to join us. If you are in IA, MO, KS, CO, WY, or SD we would like to hear from you.

Primarily, we are seeking a couple outfielders and an additional infielder but that's not necessarily a show stopper if you bring skills to the table.

Discussion: Looking for a 65 Midwest Team for 2019

Dave is a modest and humble guy so I'm going to provide my endorsement regarding his talents and his value:

This guy can play and is one of the best teammates a squad could hope for. He doesn't complain about where he is hitting in the line up, he doesn't whine about having to sit an inning to platoon; he does what is in the best interest for his team to win.

I was fortunate to be able to play the 2018 tourney season with Dave and the (mis)fortune of having to play AGAINST him for several years before that!

Dave is a strong 1st baseman with really good hands, capable of scooping low throws and hauling in high ones...he's a big target! At catching, he isn't just a 'retriever'. He keeps tabs on the hitters, positions the defense, and suggests to the pitcher where to throw the next one.

Midwest teams: you'll do yourself a big favor by picking this guy up. Just do it and send me a 'thank you' email later.

Discussion: ASA Bats Not Allowed in Vegas

Bob21, thank you. Doesn't make sense to me though? If it has the proper ASA stamp (and not on the 'ASA not allowed' list), why would SENIOR bats be ok and these particular bats not be permitted? I don't get it...there has to be a reason that we are not privy to.

Discussion: ASA Bats Not Allowed in Vegas

Last week, in the 60s division, I used my 2017 ASA Mike Freak Platinum bat for a couple ABs. Was told by an opposing player that it was not allowed (but to their credit, they didn't say anything).

When I approached one of the Directors, they confirmed this and then gave me a convoluted reason that I sure had difficulty following.

I asked a couple of umpires on other fields if they were aware of this rule for the tournament and 3 of 3 said, 'no'.

Anyone know the REAL reason why an ASA bat would not be allowed? I heard another rumor about 'paying for rights' but not sure if that was true.

Discussion: runner intentionally get hit by ball

Let me ask one more question on this thread to throw a 'wrinkle' in:

Same situation. One out, runners on first and second. Ground ball hit to shortstop and the runner on 2nd speeds up (or slows down) in an attempt to camoflage or create eye clutter for the shortstop trying to field the ball.

The runner times it perfectly, jumps over the ball (or lets it go between his legs), and the shortstop boots it. All runners advance safely.

Is this interference in any way? I have done this a few times with mixed results but don't want to get the team penalized if I'm not allowed. I've never been called on it.

Discussion: what is the rule

I don't have an answer but wouldn't it have been a good example of sportsmanship if the pinch runner had said, "I have run this inning" and then go to extras...

Thanks Nancy. Didn't see that listing. Looks like only 6 possible teams in 60 Major or 55 Major. Appreciate the heads up.

Discussion: Need an Outfielder for Vegas? 60 Major LF wants to Play!

Just found out our team is not going to Vegas this year and I'd really like to participate.

I am listed as 60 Major and primarily play LF for the Nebraska 60s. Most comfortable in the outfield. I am not an infielder. Can catch too or just be a versatile bench player, if needed.

You'll get a solid outfielder with a good arm who knows how to hit a cut off and when to make an attempt on a runner. I won't exaggerate and say you'll get a 19 for 20 hitter but I'll bat a solid .650 for you or better. Ok power: about 6 homers this year.

Bordering teams that can pick me up: Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming.

Discussion: Bad experience for a Class Tournament - Worlds

Wouldn't it have been awesome if the runner, or manager of the team of the 'slider', would have taken a moment during the ensuing argument and said:

"Blue, I (or the runner) really should have been called out. Let's go to extra innings."

What a great opportunity to add integrity, sportsmanship, and create a story of competition that could be used as a source to teach honesty. Sadly, that opportunistic door wasn't opened.

If what Craig says is true and the team ended up winning the championship; well, that's something they have to deal with as individuals and as a team.

I would feel as if my ring was tainted in some way knowing a blatant rule violation directly lead to advancing in the winner's bracket. Some could sleep well at night but some would not.

Interesting conversation in this thread...

Discussion: Any Vegas Teams Need an Outfielder? Nebraska Registered.

Hi there Dbax,

Yes, our Nebraska 60s had to pull out. We had 11 players and one pulled his hamstring and another was hospitalized this weekend for blood clots. Down to 9, we tried to fill the roster but could not.

I happened to be in Arizona already and had a non-refundable AirBnb. I'm in Vegas now still trying to hook up with a 60 Major or 55 AAA team but no luck.

Sorry about the pool play but it couldn't be helped.

Our team just now had to pull out of the Vegas tourney for the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. I already have a non-refundable AirBnb room so looking to see if anyone might need an outfielder?

I play 60 Major for the Nebraska 60s. Registered (obviously) in Nebraska. Any bordering teams need me? I believe I may be eligible to play 55 AAA but not certain as to how all those rules work.

55 AAA Division

Proud to say that our team from Nebraska claimed the top prize in this year's tourney:

1. Integrity Builders (Nebraska)
2. Arizona Legends
3. Los Vatos Viejos

Great fun, great competition, and special call out to AZL and Los Vatos for being CLASS ACTS. These two teams were filled with guys who played hard and fair. It was enjoyable to be on the same field with them.

Discussion: tag up

ASA Rulebook

Rules Supplement Section, Rule 1.K:

"Tag Ups. When a runner leaves a base too soon on a caught fly ball and returns in an attempt to retouch, this is considered a time play and not a force out.

When the appeal is the third out, all runs scored in advance of the appealed runner and prior to the legal appeal, count."

In regards to the "fourth out appeal":

Rule 5.C states:

"No run shall be scored if a 'fourth out' is the result of an appeal of a base missed or left too soon on a runner who has scored."

Discussion: Baserunner Retreating

Thanks everybody. As you can tell, we have answers on both sides of the coin.

JackZ, thanks for the SSUSA reference but need one clarifying question. When you wrote 'batter-runner is out' do you mean the batter is out AND the runner who retreated?

So, if we modified the example to bases loaded and zero outs, the result would be 2nd and 3rd with TWO outs?

Appreciate the responses guys! Chuck

Discussion: Baserunner Retreating

Apologies in advance if this has been answered before (I checked the forum back to January 2013 but only found one thread which wasn't very clear).

Anyway, here's the situation: Runner on 1st, no outs. Ground ball to 2nd base. The 2nd baseman attempts to tag the advancing runner but the runner freezes, then back peddles several steps (within the baseline).

This forces the 2nd baseman to throw to first to get the batter. The runner, moves forward again and beats the return throw and tag to 2nd base.

In the game, the umpire ruled the runner out saying he could not retreat to avoid a tag (even though he was within the baseline).

Considerable debate at the bar with some saying out and some saying safe (that you can retreat anywhere except home to first).

Anyone have a rule reference or know the correct call?

Thanks a bunch. Chuck

Discussion: Portable Electronic Scoreboards

Anyone have any history, experience, feedback, reviews on portable electronic scoreboards used in your leagues or elsewhere?

We're looking at purchasing 2 or 3 that (at a minimum) have Home/Guest score and inning. Timer would be great but is optional. Would like it to be able to hang on a fence or on wheels.

We've seen a few from Daktronic and other companies but would like some honest opinions on what you have used and are happy with...

Thanks, in advance, for any input.

We had a great time in Tulsa this past weekend. Complex was very nice along with our hosts.

Competition in the 55AAA was equally good and the weather cooperated.

Our Integrity Builders team captured the title but not without some tough games to get there.

Thanks to all for a super event in Oklahoma.

Discussion: Defibrillator Need - Get One

Last night (5/5/2014), one of our players suffered a heart attack walking to his car after his game.

Five years ago, our league purchased a defibrillator which (every year) is cleaned, batteries changed, pads swapped out, and tested along with CPR training from the local fire department.

Within a minute of the collapse, we had our defibrillator out to our player and were met by police officers who took over, applied the device, and performed CPR. A total of three shocks were administered when the rescue squad of paramedics arrived and assumed control.

Unfortunately, one of our top players at age 56 did not respond to treatment at the local trauma center and passed away.

I write this to plead with all leagues that do not have a defibrillator to get one...now.

While we were unable to save him; he had a chance thanks to the defibrillator that was applied while he was still capable of recovery and to bridge the time until the paramedics could get there.

Please have one, along with a first aid kit, at your complex.

All the best to all of you.
