| April 14, 2013 HJ | Topic: Bats Discussion: Miken Ultra 2 piece Maxload. She gone Lefty, sorry to hear your story. However, it reminded me of a post from Tri18 on 8/7/12 on how to break in senior bats. I know we all want to see what our new bats can do right away, but perhaps Alan's advice might have helped your bat last. In any event, this was Alan's post verbatim: Hey guys, Since bats are hitting the field and I have received a lot of communication I would like to go over suggested break in for the Ambush (or any senior bat)... Use 44 cor 375 balls. Round 1. Take 25 swings at app. 50% swing effort rotating the bat slightly in between each swing Round 2. Take 25 swings at app. 75% swing effort rotating the bat slightly in between each swing. Round 3. Take 25 swings starting around 75% swing effort gradually increasing in swing intensity until your last 15 swings are at game swing speed. By doing this you will increase both the bats life and potential for higher performance down the road. It is not recommended for ANY senior bat to use balls other than this unless it is the new .52 ball. Doing so will dramatically DECREASE the life expectancy of the bat. Try and not to use wet balls during practice bp sessions and continually rotate your bat each time you swing it. Best of luck to all of you and feel free to contact me about any senior bat. | April 9, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Travel Discounts Explain what kind of travel you do and someone may have some good advice. The best thing about AARP is the Chase AARP credit card. It costs nothing and rebates 3% on travel related items. The rebate can be used online to pay back the credit card so there is no BS with the rebate. You can get the rebate for any travel not just AARP sponsored stuff. Some travel agents also rebate part of their commission particularly if you are not a PIA and just tell them what to book. |
| April 4, 2013 HJ | Topic: Bats Discussion: COMBAT BANKRUPTCY Totally agree with 4x4. lewis, do you realize your post is a political statement and just encourages more off the topic statements? I will not take your bait. |
| April 4, 2013 HJ | Topic: Bats Discussion: New Miken 2 piece End Load (supermax) You can't. Get out of the thread immediately after you post and double posting shouldn't be an issue. |
| April 3, 2013 HJ | Topic: Bats Discussion: COMBAT BANKRUPTCY It is political since it states 1 side of the story. I will email you directly. |
| April 1, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Throwing your Hips for Maximum Rotational Power. "Swing Makeover Episode #6" I apologize for my bad manners in not thanking you earlier. I previously read Ted Williams' book and was reminded by your post that he uses the term axe swing. I looked again at your videos and they make more sense to me now. I believe you are advocating a more level swing. Thanks again and do you ever do clinics in the Cleveland Akron area? |
| March 25, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Throwing your Hips for Maximum Rotational Power. "Swing Makeover Episode #6" Watched the video. Question: why do all the pros use the same style, i.e. they leave go of the bat with their top right hand and the swing ends with the bat in the left hand generally touching or almost touching the ground deep behind the hitter? |
| March 25, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Tired of breaking bats Wayne, our league is in the process of writing rules to ban altered bats. Please explain about the new end caps because we were about to ok replacement of end caps but weren't aware or "special" end caps. Thank you. |
| March 24, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Blood Clot ALERT!! Tater, I read both articles. Usually the superficial is benign and easily treated. Yours must have been high up where there is more danger of throwing a clot and it going to a bad dangerous place. The saphenous vein itself can be removed with no problem and is often used for bypass. taits, since you mentioned stretching to prevent the "pop," be advised as discussed on earlier threads, static stretching increases the risk of a "pop" and weakens muscles if done before an activity. Dynamic stretching is now universally recommended for warmup and jogging before activity is good warmup. Static stretching is fine after the activity but not before. |
| March 24, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Blood Clot ALERT!! Taits is so right about health being everything. Last week a healthy- appearing neighbor died at 60, just never woke up. Clots are known to form after periods of inactivity like long plane rides or long periods of sitting. It almost killed Nixon and killed an MSNBC correspondent early in the Iraq war who had been immobile in a tank for many hours. My wife and I before a recent long flight, purchased medical grade compression socks (over the calf). We both felt our legs seemed much better after that flight compared to how they felt after other similar flights. Compression socks for clots also ties in with a thread I started about socks in which tri18 strongly recommended them for both games and recovery. Perhaps as seniors this makes more sense for a number of reasons. I know I have found compression shorts and shirts to be effective and will now use the socks. They also sell calf sleeves which might make sense for some too. |

| March 22, 2013 HJ | Topic: Product review Discussion: Socks Thank you Alan; this is precisely the info I was looking for. I have already switched to very tight UA tops, and Bike 7625 commpression shorts. I will check out the Zensahs on your site and other sites. I consistently find no good reason not to use compression wear. Restated I find no downside and think there is mucho upside. Thanks again. |
| March 22, 2013 HJ | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Tired of breaking bats It is very hard to draw conclusions about bats because each of us is in his own sphere of information. W/o a centralized accumulator of lots of info (which won't happen) you just don't have a big enough sample to draw many conclusions. There are also many rec players who don't don't generate the power that tournament players do and thus they are satisfied w/ durability. I see many red maxloads used by numerous players on a team last for years. Additionally comparisons of numbers of hits can be misleading for another reason. Macenko rarely broke bats. Not because of bat speed, but because he was so good and consistent that he hit the ball below center and not head on. Below center hits create a wing effect and the ball travels farther and bats last longer. Fast bat speed generators who hit the ball head on destroy bats. Comparisons are tough and I do believe greed plays a major part in the companies' decisions on durability. It is the weak hitters who fuel low durability bats and you big hitters suffer the consequences.Hopefully, Monsta and/or GSC and/or the new promised one from Tatoo, will really perform and be durable. |
| March 21, 2013 HJ | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Catcher's verbal interference Ad hominum attacks and barbs hijack threads distract interest and are just wrong. Please stop it. Maybe start a thread "Tim and Swing" and use that one for this stuff and keep it out of substantive threads. |
| March 20, 2013 HJ | Topic: Product review Discussion: Socks First, I would like more input about socks which is the topic of this thread. I particularly would like to know if anyone is using support hose like you use on an airplane. And yes that make them in sport styles. Second, since there were a number of comments about Plantar Fasciitis I feel obligated to comment: A. Don't take the shot unless absolutely necessary to continue playing in a game or games you deem important. The shot provides pain relief but actually weakens the plantar fascia. B. Power Step makes cheap orthotics which for many work well. I use their Pinnacle Maxx model for games and in all walking and other sports. C. SB is the worse sport for PF since there are long pauses when you do nothing and then you are required to run hard suddenly. My doc, a SB player, advises to jog a bit before games or practice and then to intermittently jog a bit during games or practice. This is to keep the fascia warm, and relaxed. D. Swing is right about the wall stretch. Email me and I will call you if you want details on one that really works. E. Swing is wrong about what the wall stretch does. The problem with PF is that the calf is too short, pulls up on the heel, and thereby stretches the plantar fascia. The constant stretching causes inflammation and pain. By stretching the calf muscles the heel is not pulled up and the fascia attached to the heel is not pulled and the fascia can then relax. The overstretched fascia can actually cause a bone spur. The spur is the result of PF not the cause. F. Wearing shoes with inserts most of the day keeps the fascia relaxed and long (not stretched). Magnesium supplements can help relax the fascia as can epson salt baths. |
| March 20, 2013 HJ | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Catcher's verbal interference Steve, don't know about Barberton because I play with Huff n Puffers and not in the Silver League. I play indoor winter with all Silver Leaguers and they are wonderful to play with, helpful and welcomed the outsider (me) from near Cleveland. The sportmanship of the Silver Leaguers is exemplary and none of them would pull the verbal BS mentioned in a number of posts above. Some of us just believe it is not appropriate-end of story. |
| March 20, 2013 HJ | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Catcher's verbal interference Steve, your last post implies that there should not be any verbal interference. 1. How about yelling slide when the runner doesn't have to in an attempt to stop him from taking the next base? 2. How about yelling infield fly when the umps don't and the ball will fall fair? 3. How about yelling no play when the outfielder has a play. It is interesting that the guy who says we should just concentrate put this in a post recently: "except once when I slid accidentally at home plate in Columbus In(sic) this year--had a senior moment and forgot where I was ...." I guarantee you if I were a catcher and their were no rules on verbal interference or unsportsmanlike conduct, my big mouth would break your concentration. Why encourage what I think is just bad behavior? |
| March 20, 2013 HJ | Topic: Product review Discussion: Socks After a bout of plantar fasciitis, I switched to Feetures socks which are generally supportive but have a more supportive band which circles the middle of the arch. I use them for practice and games and I think they help. I am seeing more total support socks advertised for running. I am curious if others are wearing some kind of support socks for practice, games and/or recovery. If so, what are you wearing and do you think they help? |
| March 19, 2013 HJ | Topic: Bats Discussion: COMBAT BANKRUPTCY Nothing, and it is a blatantly political statement which does not belong here irrespective of whether you agree or disagree. This is just wrong here. Wayne, if you want to talk politics email me and we can discuss. (email address on profile) |
| March 19, 2013 HJ | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Catcher's verbal interference Sorry southernson, I just don't accept that hitting a 70 y/o catcher is an acceptable procedure to shut him up. Swing makes a valid point distinguishing when the ball is in the air. To me that is where absolute silence from the catcher should be the rule. Banter by the catcher before the pitch is perhaps best left to the umpire's discretion when it "goes over the line". Unfortunately, umps don't like discretionary power and don't act. Therefore, I still go with the absolute. |
