Discussion: WOODLAWN HITTING CLUB?

Proud member of the Taylor branch Woodlawn Hitting Club. I really like the 5 hit 5 round format. We've been hitting for about 4 weeks now. Tell my buddy Steve Papalas, Jim said Hi!

Good post Gary, IMO, guys between 50-60 that play in the upper levels can still put them out at will, but at 60 and above it starts to drop off. We have a 65+ league that plays before us and uses ASA bats and I doubt they could hit any out if the fence was 250'. We use a Dudley Thunder SY Classic M(40/325) in our 55+ Can-Am league which is loaded with hall of fame players and our HR's our down. Mishits are now staying in tha park . When you go to Vegas for worlds, with the thin air and the Rock ball almost anybody can go yard. I still have my Original Combat DaBomb purchased in 2005, but I only use it in tournament play. Can't understand why guys use their good bat for bp and in crappy weather conditions and complain when it breaks.

Discussion: Senior bats vs. 52/300 ball

Dave, Senior bats are hotter than other associations 1.20 bpf because they are tested differently. Senior bats only test the COP(Center of percussion) basically center of barrel where sweetspot is supposed to be and are tested out of wrapper. Other associations(USSSA) test the whole barrel and after a number of swings have been put on bat. Composite bats improve in performance with more swings on them and will exceed 1.20bpf. As far as the difference with a 52/300 ball and 44/375 your linedrive would have probably stayed in the park. Pretty hard to square up a 52/300 ball and get great distance. If you hit them slightly under center and create spin they will travel. Also depends on what 52/300 ball you are hitting. The new stamp USSSA bat are supposed to be made to unravel when they will exceed 1.20, while older models can and will exceed 1.20 after many swings.

Easton used to have the Reveal, clear barrel that was supposed to change color when exceeding test limits. Reebok had the Vector O
with holes in the handle for less drag. Mizuno Blur had the strips which were supposed to grip the ball and put more spin on it, and the Dudley Lightning with the tacky barrel which is supposed to grip ball also.

Curly,
I think the 32 your seeing on those fastpitch bats refer to length (32"), fastpitch bats usually top out at 34"/26oz.

Fred,
I remember that, and I believe there were a couple of other 32oz. metals. I don't recall any composite weighing more than 30oz. Last 32oz. bat I owned was a Louisville TPS Gold also had one in a 34oz.

I have not seen a 32oz bat in years. Most manufacturers top out at 30oz and some of the newer stuff at 28oz.

Hey Crump, Stick and some of the OKI boys tried them out last summer. He told me it was a good bat, but don't hold your breath waiting for these to go into production.

Discussion: Do you use senior bats in non tournament games/leagues?

In our Can-Am league(Metro Detroit) we use senior bats but hit Classic M balls(40/325) with optional screen.

Discussion: When Is It Bat Altering?

mad dog, I posted the bat rolling site for DC because he said he had never seen a roller before. I know that anything besides bp, that increases performance is illegal. If you need to enhance the performance of a composite bat , it's time to find another hobby. Anybody remember the turbo slot batting gloves which were supposed to increase bat speed?

DC try this site:http://www.batrollers.com/. Unlike endloading which increases MOI, I do not see any performance advantage in weight in the hands or handle. Bat doctor said the longest rod he took out of a bat came from a 30oz. Launch(5")

I thought it was weight at the end of the bat that changes the Moment of Inertia. Weight in the handle slows your hands down. After the Ultra got banned and some aluminum bats had to be recertified they started adding weight to the handles (rods, etc.)to tone the bats down. I remember a bat doctor around here who used to remove the rods and add weight to the end of the bat.

Discussion: Legal/Illegal Use of Courtesy Runner?

I have never heard of a legal substitution while ball is in play. Unless courtesy runner started at home plate I would have to say it is an out. I have seen batters called out for passing the halfway line going to first while they had a coutesy runner, but I have never seen a courtesy runner come in while the ball is in play. Unless the league has special running rules ( overrunning any base etc.)

Discussion: Pitching

I thought that USSSA was a hand signal, or is that just for pitches that are not in the 3-10' range ? Bench or on deck batter was supposed to let batter know. Used to be that way, has that changed?

Stick, I understand the ball call, but shouldn't he have said ball, illegal pitch, instead of ball, deep. I'm not sure that the pitcher was ever aware that he was in violation of the rules. I was the only one he did this to and it was only the one time at bat. Without any type of signal, how is the batter supposed to know he is gonna call the illegal pitch.

Discussion: Pitching

This happened to me last night in a USSSA playoff game. Pitcher was standing at least 10' behind the rubber, so I stepped out and told the ump he was out of the box. He informed me that if he pitched from there he would call it a ball. I got back in the box and pitch was delivered from 10' away. I glanced back at ump to see if there was a signal(none) and he called a ball, deep. Didn't bother to say anything(didn't want to be a whiner), threw next pitch from same spot and it was outside so I took my base. No signal either pitch and nothing said to pitcher, who only did this that 1 at bat. In my experiance it is an illegal pitch, verbal in ASA, hand signal in USSSA, and both in Senior ball. Pitching rules are not enforced anymore, no presentation of the ball, coming to a stop before ball is delivered, and no 3' hump.(USSSA)

Discussion: ASA Bats

3.4(3) • APPROVED BATS
All bats marked "1.21 BPF" (Bat Performance Factor) or less, SSUSA approved bats, or bats having an ASA 2000 or 2004 stamp are approved for use. Any bat displaying the label "Exceeds 1.21 BPF" is not approved. The rating must be clearly visible on the bat, or it must be obvious to the inspector that the bat is of an age to make it not high-tech.

New stamp ASA only bats do not have the 1.20 bpf on them so they are no longer legal in SSUSA. In league ball it will depend on your league rules. USSSA bats have the 1.20 bpf so they should be legal.
