Discussion: Richard Gomez- The General

I just heard from USSSA director Doug Stark that softball coach and player Richard Gomez better known as the General died yesterday. I had not talked to him in past year but always enjoyed his calling me and his plans to build a field of Dreams park. I hope in Heaven he now has that field. Interesting guy who put alot of us guys together in Phoenix area to play ball.GI

Discussion: Reclassifying Teams

Thanks for info on changes terry and rest of group. I still believe we are the blessed ones for getting to play a kids game. Competetion is always a way to find out your value. I look forward to having a chance to win some games and maybe a tournament this year at 55 AAA level, I will not miss Gonzales team out of texas - they are a monster of a bunch who I suspect could compete at highest of levels. Drillers and Just for fun are a great bunch of guys who also should find success at higher level. Again I am just thankful to be on field at any level and enjoy hanging with the players who have lit me up for so many years. Some of you have asked about CJS coach Barry he plans to come out and coach team at Bullhead March 1-3rd just to get out of house and se how he feels. Will be great to see him out again , I also understand Pat with double new knees may be out to watch or play. See you on the field.

If I was in Vegas betting I know who I would have money on for that division. That's why games ar played on the field. never know who will get hot and upset the favorite. be safe

Discussion: Best Pitcher

Tim enjoyed your thoughts and views about the game and pitching. It takes alot of courage to stand on that mound at times. Not a easy thing to do to throw strikes and look for small ways to get a batter out when things are stacked up for the hitter. I was really sad to see 1-1 count discounted esp. when it was clear the 40-58 crowd was in favor of making the change. As Martin L. King said we can all have a dream . Who knows maybe one day 1-1 count will be considered and we can play 7 inning games. I am encouraging our team members to swing at first strike this year as I know I will throw down the middle and it will be best pitch to hit. 6-8 foot right down the pipe. I can promise the 2nd pitch will not be the same after strike, than you will have to deal with higher ark, quick pitches or whatever else i can get away with. I have said before and will again, great to be on the field, what a rush to spend time with guys who I have competed with for so long. I look forward to new season in Feb and I also continue to keep coach Barry CJS in my thoughts for a health recovery and to see him back on field running our team. Best of luck to you in Tucson this weekend.

Discussion: Best Pitcher

Webbie you troublemaker, To answer your question I would have to say the best pitchers I have faced and most difficult were in USSSA and also back in 70's with unlimited ark. Today with the dumb 0-0 count hitting off a pitcher could not be much easier. Throwing underhanded, 6 to 12 foot , if your lucky and with bats that can send you straight to the nursing home being a good pitcher is pretty limited these days. I have pitched for over 30 years now and really only thing we can do as a pitcher is throw 1st strike without fear because people love to see the first strike than try our best to hit a corner or once in awhile throw a illegal pitch and cover ourself with as much protection as possible when the middle shot flys by. I will still try what ever I can to get a small advantage but it is a hitters game. Still even with what I just said thank God we can still be a part of the game. I am glad that we can voice our feelings both good and bad and look forward to seeing all on the field for as long as God permits. Pitchers today must realize no matter how good they are that one day a ball will find them and lets hope that when it does they will be lucky enough to return to the game.

Good Luck Fangrabbers and Coach John, I believe it is time for you to win this one. Hope you do not run into a little known team that had moved ITSELF up from double A to AAA to play you guys in the TOC. CJS Express lost first 3 games in 2007 TOC but with new format got hot and won all the rest to beat Fangrabbers twice in Championship. Joe's Homerun winning that final game. That may be one for the record Books. Best of luck my friend, Bring it back to AZ.

Boston thank you for kind words. Time does fly by so fast I turn 60 March 3rd and I am sure guys will tell you i run like 80. I am saving my speed for 80 and over HA. I still love the game and enjoy pitching except for covering 2nd base on double plays. I never saw Randy Johnson cover 2nd so wonder who in world came up with that one. You guys were always tough but as you said fun to play against and knew we would have to play hard to win. great memories, What softball is all about. Good luck in Tucson, I had hoped we would play at 55level there but will start full bore in Feb. Watch out for those flying 55's. GI

Thanks guys for info. neat to see many express ideas. When I started post month ago did not know what to expect. I do enjoy seeing several AZ players names in list. I have pitched against many of them and I am sure they lit me up.. Just want to say again what a joy it is to share and play softball with all of you. Having just seen a college friend leave this world in past week and spending time with family and friends in Indiana I again realize our time here is short and how important it is to thank those around us that make our life better. look forward to seeing some new best leadoffs this year in 2013. I will be pitcher wearing the bee keeper helmeit. Hugs GI PS Webbie stop laughing I can hear you laughing thinking about my helmets in past.

Hi guys I know CJS Express really wanted to play but we are still working out kinks with Coach Barry recovering from 2 valve replacements and a pacemaker being placed. I know he will take a while to return but others on team will work together starting in Feb. to start playing again. barry may try to put some of us together for Laughlin tourney March 1-3 just to see how he feels. I too was sorry to see so few of teams in tournament, I have heard several players from other teams say 3 day hurt them and that guys in 55 division are concerned about one of teams who have dominated 55 AAA division past couple of years but remain at this level. Some have suggested not competing against them and although I do not understand why some teams continue to play down I will continue to play them and do our best to make it a competive game. I believe we can only get better by playing against tough teams. I am sure more teams will play in future and remember this is first year and and our weather-(AZ.) having just returned yesterday from South Bend Indiana can not be beat. Bless each of you and I hope all enjoy this weekend in Tucson.

DUKE WITH THE 1-1 COUNT BEING FORGOTTEN AGAIN I UNDERSTAND THE NEW RULE FOR TOC AND ALL OTHER TOURNAMENTS THIS YEAR WILL BE EVERYONE MUST NOT BRING A BAT TO PLATE TILL AFTER 1ST PITCH IS THROWN. THE ON DECK PERSON WILL HOLD YOUR BAT AND CAN ONLY GIVE TO YOU AFTER 2ND PITCH. BATTER WITH A BAT AT PLATE BEFORE 2ND PITCH WILL BE CALLED FOR INNING ENDING OUT AND WILL BE MOVED TO NEXT HIGHER DIVISION IN THE OLDER DIVISIONS.(UNLESS THE NEXT LEVEL IS UNDER 60 THAN YOU CAN PLAY 60'S OR HIGHER)BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE , THERE MAY BE A UPCOMING NEW SURVEY AND DEPENDING ON RESULTS YOU MAY SWING AT FIRST PITCH IF NO NEVER USE ANY SENIOR BAT AGAIN OR PROMISE TO USE A WOOD BAT.VIOLATION OF THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN PLAYER MOVING TO JAPAN AND USING THEIR RUBBER BALL REST OF LIFE. LIFE IS GOOD IF WE CAN STILL PLAY THE GAME AT THIS AGE UNDER ANY RULES.

If your still checking on 55major teams playing in Tucson, I heard the other day that 55 Just for Fun was playing in Tucson and I would guess after winning so many Winter Spring etc world tournaments they are playing 55 Major this year. Not for sure if they have been moved up but I would sure think they would have been. Great bunch of guys who have really done well in past year or so.

Bless you Tim- Loved it , Felt like I was at church after feeling that much inspiration. I almost forgot why I loved pitching USSSA pitch with fakes until I saw kids playing recently. I do miss that alot. I remember back in 70's in Indiana throwing unlimited, Now that was a different game where pitchers did have some impact. My math is bad but is it possible to get 8 pitches with 0-0 count and one to waste. Only thing I like about 0-0 count is I can relax because most batters should not even hold their bats during first pitch and than they complain if I take some time to pitch second pitch. Still I love the game and you guys.

JDub, I agree was very interesting. Looks pretty close overall about trying but for sure 40-60 looks to want to change to 1-1 count. No matter what the decision is my guess we all will be out there swinging in 2013 and that is a good thing.I guess the jury is still out but for sure I know when we do not play full 7 innings players that did not vote for change to 1-1 should keep mouth shut and just keep paying for the right to play the game. Be Cool- See you on the field.

I still feel Mike Manna CJS Express 55 is the fastest guy I have seen run in senior ball. Sad thing is we did not win any tournaments this past year so Mike will not be there. E4 /E6 Is there any chance Doug Peterson who you talked about is same Doug P who played in AZ in the 1980-90.s for Mike McCormick's team? I remember Doug as ashortstop who like to hit ball to right side alot.

I am holding this ball right now as I have new one that was not used when we played team in 2011 Words before regular tournament. KEKO Ball JSA . looks and acts just like a big rubber ball. One of our guys who used to play with us and could hit a long home run did hit one that went about 220. We ended up playing on girls field with 200 foot fence and I think maybe one was hit out,. Fun to play those guys who were so polite and made new friends. if the results for 1-1 count do not pass I suggest we use these balls at least first pitch since guys want to look at several pitches anyway and waste time. Forget that we would have to chase ball that bounces over fence with the 10 foot ark that I am sure will be passed one of these days to make it even better to hit for the batter.Sorry but one of things on my wish list this year is to see batters ready to hit 1st fat pitch of game and maybe santa let us 55 AAA players get to play on Vegas Field Of Dreams Field. Is this Heaven-- Hugs GI

Webbie I miss you to my friend , Hard to believe you bat leadoff, I would not care to see you bat a extra time and you were good enough to hit line drives for hits when homeruns were used up.Hapy New year off to hit this morning.

Discussion: Out after 3 Home Runs

I disagree on several fronts. 1. As a pitcher for last 30 years if I am afraid of a line drive I should have moved to another spot 30 years ago. Come to think of it I could have saved alot of money on shin Guards Helmet face mask etc but I pay for a car that has safety belts so I guess somethings you just have to have for safety. Canljack loved your note. Yes I to call it sandbagging when you continue to win tournaments but do not move up or like in worlds this year in Vegas playing Texas team that went 5-0 and won it all hitting homeruns 3 of first 4 batters in 1st inning or hitting many singles over fence rest of game not to mention line drives off the fence. I am glad they will I hope anyway be moved to Major or higher, Other teams also that continue to beat up on 55 AAA competetion or other divisions need to move on. I can tell you we had to after a great year 3 years ago and despite losing over half our team the next year we played up in major took out lumps and losses all year. Tough but I understood process. It's called winning. Hitting 3 homeruns a game may be okay in AAA even with great bats although our CJS Express team did not do that very often last year Maybe why we did not win a tournament last year,,,, But hitting more than 3 should be a out in AAA and I suspect should be outs for higher div. when they reach their limits but I will stick with AAA level. I look forward to another season against all you teams in 55 AAA and I will be glad to serve youa homerun up after 3 homeruns if it will make you feel better. Guys will tell you that I am good at that anyway. Hugs to all of you, Just blessed to be on the field many of our friends from past year cannot say that. On a good nore CJS coach barry is now home from hospital with some new valves and a pacemaker. Hope to see him back whenever possible in 2013.Remember if you hit me to hard up middle you get my wife, kids and grandchildren as part of deal. Just kidding. GI

Thanks J DUB for comments about1-1. I agree big time. I was able to practice this past week at Eldorado and Chap. parks with guys who pracice twice a week in Scottsdale. I loved the 1-1 count just like league or when we played with the kids. If guys do not want to hit first pitch that is strike let them come to plate without a bat first pitch.I throw down the middle either way.Nice to see you and some of guys we played 40 and over with (Dom and others)Years ago. I turn 60 in march times flies but I do not. HA.GI
