JackZ_SLC based on my personal experience that has not been the case in Senior softball. I started playing 50s in 1996 and played the entire season at age 49. I did not turn 50 until November 12, 1996.

Alan, I could not agree with you more. I have managed teams and use only OBP for the reasons you mention.
In addition to considering defense as well, at our age (65-70), I also would consider those who run for others in the equation. Guys who play the outfield and do a lot of extra sub running I value highly.
In any case, selections should not be based SOLELY on OBP in my opinion.

I don't think the rule means you have to swing from the heels...I've seen many players just dump the ball over the infield. I've done it many times myself. I call it "place hitting".

Gary, I could not agree more.
I pitch a lot in batting practice and I would not pitch without my screen. In fact, yesterday we were hitting and I hit a good friend of mine in the eyebrow (ball actually deflected off his hat) because he was not completely behind the screen. Thankfully, he told me this morning that the doctor said he should be OK but he did need several stiches. It was awful looking and scared me to death. He was calmer than I was.

Perhaps the Senior Volleyball League should look at placing screens behind players so they won't have to worry about head shots?

Discussion: New Rules

The new rule I find most interesting from where I sit (70s) is the Mixed Bracket Equalizer where:

"In tournament play where there are mixed brackets, defined as teams in different rating groups where one team is giving an equalizer, the team giving the equalizer shall be the Home team in all such games."

Our 65 Major team rarely plays a team at the same rating level in area tournaments, so we almost always give an equalizer and play by the lower rated teams' home run rule (which by the way hardly ever causes us difficulty since we done hit many anyway). It is nice to know that now we will get to be home team without the coin toss!

Actually, from my reading, the teams not being able to play down rule only applies to the 40s thru 65s. It does not apply to age groups 70 and higher.

Frankie, LOL! Here's a strategy to try next season: wear 3 pound ankle weights and long pants at your first tourney. Hopefully, the first time you run for someone, everyone will see how much you've slowed down! Of course, even with the ankle weights, I can think of some guys on the team you will STILL outrun!

Why can't we get a list of teams and a draft seeding game schedule on either the SSUSA or Texas Half Century websites like the other tournaments going on at the same time this week and weekend?
Is the Heart of Texas tournament not up to the same level as these other tournaments?

Well, less than 3 days until the 65s and older age groups are scheduled to play in Georgetown. Has ANYONE heard anything at this late date?

Donnie, I would love to go to Dalton; however, the 65 Major team I'm on has not decided if we are going. We ARE going to Vegas for the Worlds.

LOL Dennis! I enjoyed your post very much and am sad to see that "Your Georgeness" has loosed the hounds on Event Labs on the unsuspecting ranks of mortal 65 Major teams (such as us on the San Antonio Silver Streaks)!
I guess we will lace 'em up and get after them in Vegas.
