| July 13, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Combining M & M+ boston, I believe that Florida and California are now allowed to have players from adjoining states like the rest of the country. I think that rule change was effective this year. I also think that if players were rated, some that got rated as M+ would simply stop playing the game (or play Major, if available). In some areas of the country - even a big state like Texas - there are NO active 60 or 65 Major Plus teams at this time. So, using player ratings, guys rated M+ would have nowhere to play UNLESS they were picked up by a Major team and there are severe restrictions on that. |
| July 13, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: Looking for a pitcher or outfielder 65 major plus Hey Donnie, Stick Clatta out there in the OF! I've seen him patrol out there before. And, heck, he can pitch - he pitches BP all the time! Good luck next week in Dalton and I hope to get to see you guys play and visit with everyone. |
| July 13, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: DALTON GAME TIMES Even though they say the deadline is July 6 - a week ago - they always allow more time for stragglers?? It would be nice to have game times AS WELL AS bracket times well before we play like SSUSA does. SPA is not good with communications; they put out nothing relative to game times, etc. on their web site or anything that can be printed and kept for reference. I would like to have game times for some of the other divisions so I can see some of my friends on teams from other parts of the country play and have a chance to visit with them. |
| July 13, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: WHO GETS THE BALL?? Since I play the OF, this has happened to me many times. If I am the burned party, I always retrieve the ball. I also do not appreciate those guys who do not. If I am on the field, I feel it is my duty to bring the ball back to the infield. |
| July 7, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: DALTON GAME TIMES Ron, the deadline for submissions was yesterday. I expect there will be the usual late submissions and then SPA will start putting the brackets together. I suspect we won't have anything until late next week at the earliest. Who are you playing with in the 60s? I'll be with the Texas Makules 60 Major team. Good luck and hope to see you in Dalton. |
| July 5, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Dalton in July Billy, Texas Makules 60 Major will be there for the 60s. The 65s will not be held until September. I had hoped to get Omen to come but they cannot get enough guys. Will you be playing with Turn 2 in the 60s? |

| June 30, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Website comments Discussion: teams going to Gadsden and Boaz al for NSA hoovedog, I just swung hard in case I hit it. Bobby hit a couple I thought were gone that just died. |
| June 30, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Border Battle Not a good start for Team USA...I enjoyed the question from the commentator when Team Canada had the bases loaded "does he want to go for the base hit or hit a Grand Slam?" Another softball novice, I guess... |
| June 29, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Slowpitch, US National team vs US Futures team on ESPN2 at 8:00pm or ES2HD Baker was motioning for Rainwater to get down while McCraw - the on-deck hitter - was making no signal. It did look like Rainwater made a very wide turn at 3rd like Bruce said. It almost looked like he came running out of the dugout! I also agree that Beth Mowins should be replaced by someone with some softball "cred". |
| June 29, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Website comments Discussion: teams going to Gadsden and Boaz al for NSA I had not played NSA in several years until this past weekend in Texas at the State Championships in Arlington. Yes, NSA is allowing senior bats; however, the ball used was a 50 COR / 275 compression. The one we used was a AJ Starr Tatoo ball which did not hold up well in the heat. Good swings went to the outfield to die and the ball had no pace through the infield. |
| June 23, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Is winning the most important thing? I just read all the posts with interest. I agree completely with Woodie and Harry! While I still love playing the game and competing, the relationships and the competition are what ultimately cause me to return - win or lose. I enjoy seeing and visiting with old friends (and making new ones) at the various venues to which we travel. Even playing on new teams or teams with new players is a treat. Every one is different and I enjoy the bonding and camaraderie that exists. Life is good and, at my age, I try to enjoy every day. As Woodie says, we only have so many innings left. And, Harry, exactly WHAT is in that parking lot? LOL. |
| June 14, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Las Vegas gott2play, Don't all the "Station" hotels (Palace Station, Boulder Station, etc.) hit everyone up for the so-called "resort fee" on top of the room rate? I stayed at Palace Station a couple of years ago and got an additional $14.99/night added to the room rate. Eastside Cannery has no such "hidden" fees that you don't learn about until it's too late. That's where I stay now. |

| June 9, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Texas State Championship Our team, Texas Makules, got to the fields at 11AM to take BP for what was supposed to be our 1PM game versus the San Antonio Silver Streaks only to hear in the parking lot that we were pushed back to 3:30PM. Our coach showed up with the equipment about 11:30 - he had not been called to advise of the time change. So we sat around for a few hours while some teams did start play at 1PM - our scheduled time slot. THEN, when we did get to play, the teams we were scheduled to play against changed. We did play Team 454 - the only team on our original schedule. Then we played the Texas Thunder. Both games were on Field 1. Then, we got sent to "the back 40" (field 7) to play what was obstensibly our 3rd seeding game. Instead, we were told that the AAA team we were scheduled to play (don't know who at this point) DID NOT WANT TO PLAY US. Not only that but the AAA team scheduled to play the other Major team - Memphis Invest/Edge DID NOT WANT TO PLAY THEM either. So, the TD had us play each other! This, in spite of the fact that we are ALREADY scheduled to play them in a best 2 of 3 today! Sheer idiocy! We wound up playing a meaningless game and our leadoff hitter gets hurt and is now out for a while! I am sick and tired of teams telling the TDs who they will and will not play in the seeding games. Over the last couple of years teams have just forfeited rather than play us. I don't think it's we are that good, it seems to me the lower rated teams are so afraid of BEATING a higher rated team and getting moved up (heaven forbid). This also happens in the SPA. Sorry for the rant but this just gnaws at me that teams would pay money to play in these qualifiers and, instead of looking at an opportunity to play a higher rated team as a good thing, seek to duck such a game and screw a team out of a "guaranteed" game. |
| June 8, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: retinal detachment recovery time Frankie, Glad to hear you are mending well! Luckily for me, I guess, is that the eye that had the detachment is my right eye. When hitting, I pick up the ball first with my good (left) eye and the right eye does not impede my hitting. Also, I think the brain compensates for the schleral buckle around my right (makes objects skinnier and taller) and it does not impede my hitting or fielding as far as I can tell. I had some floaters before the surgery but they are not bad even now. Hope to see you on the field before long. LL |
| June 7, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Texas State Championship And, now with the cancellation of today's games for the 65s and 70s, it'll be a serious mess! We (60s) are scheduled for 8 and 9:30 in the morning so we're headed down to Dallas (from OKC) not yet knowing if we will be pushed back or not. So be it... |
| June 6, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: On Base Percentage (OBP) I have to agree with Paco on the situational Sac Fly. IF the SAC results in the max run scoring (5, 7 or 9 depending on division), I think it should not be counted as an at-bat. Any other time, I agree with the out call. To me, it is more logical to get the SAC if you aren't penalized for doing so rather than trying for a base hit and possibly hitting into a double play. JMO |
| June 3, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Reno I heard that the High Desert Roadrunners beat Ruth in the winners bracket finals. First American Title beat Tri-State Diamondbacks to knock them out. So High Desert was sitting back awaiting the winner of the Ruth - First American Title game. |
| June 2, 2012 DoubleL10 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Rock 'n Reno Challenge Cup 2012 I just got back from Reno yesterday after 8 days and playing in the 60s and 65s. Weather started out terrible - it was snowing when we landed on May 24! Friday started play in the 60 Major division and our Texas Makules team played back-to-back in cold, windy conditions with some snow and sleet thrown in for good measure. I don't think the temp got to 50 that day! Every day thereafter, the weather improved until our last day - this past Thursday. In the 60 Major division, we finished first beating No Dice from CA 21-20 in the Championship game. There were several good games throughout the tournament, most memorably the No Dice-Timberworks game. No Dice was up 30-14 in the top of the open inning and Timberworks posted 23 runs to go up 37-30. Undeterred, No Dice threw up the necessary 8 in the bottom to win a classic, 38-37! In the 65 Major Plus, our Omen team won after getting clobbered in the Championship game by a very good Village Merchants team from FL. We bounced back in the "If" game to win 27-6. There were also several very good games in this part of the tournament as well. We came back from 12 down to Bickerton from CA to score 13 in the bottom of the 7th to win 26-25. We played at both Golden Eagle and Rancho San Rafael. The tournament was, as usual, well run and Dave Dowell and his wife, Fran, are to be commended for their dedication and hard work in running this event. |
