Discussion: softball strike zone

Although I scan this site daily I rarely respond, but this is a great subject. I would definitely support the plate and mat being a strike. Then you only have to worry about the ump being consistent with the arc. Of course being a pitcher on occasion I certainly support the idea of the pitcher having the 6 feet to play with behind the pitching rubber. Just need to make sure the pitcher doesn't take advantage of the 6 feet by making it 10 feet (which I'm guilty of when I can get away with it.) God bless all of you!

Larry, I'm playing with a team from Richmond (Goodman Builders). Should be a decent team with players from Richmond and the VA Beach area. Just had my 4th shoulder surgery (left shoulder) back in Dec and being hard headed as I am, may have hurt it again during my rehab. However, I have my health, a great wife, and my harley so life if good! Take care and I look forward to seeing you and Pam at a tournament this year.

T-Bone, there are some major plus teams (which is where you should be playing) in adjoining states and I'm sure you'll be contacted once they find out about your situation. Once I find out what tournaments we (Richmond, VA) can pick up a player you can bet we'll be teammates again.
T-Rex, T-bone's been a nomad for over a year and I was hoping he would end up back here. Anyway, hope you are doing well and staying out of trouble.
Larry, how is life in God's country? Say hello to Pam for me.

Discussion: What's up, Doc?

Einstein (Joe), Hope you had a Merry Christmas. I just read that ASA won a major law suit against several bat doctors and their companies. I believe this might be a start in cracking down on illegal bats. Have a great New Year and I'll be seeing you at some tournaments this coming year.
God Bless.

Discussion: Altered Bat Update

Joe (Einstein), I agree that "if" a player is found gulity (beyond a shadow of doubt) of using an illegal bat I believe he should be banned for life. However, I also believe the term "illegal" must be clearly defined. In the ASA Burlington tournament a bat was removed from the game because it had excessive tape on the handle. Obviously that person shouldn't be banned for life. However, if a bat is "painted over" or something along these lines then I truly believe that should constitute a life time ban. Until the various association come up with a common punishment I believe this will continue to be a problem.

Last point Joe, you are way to smart to let these "no names" get to you. Maybe if they had your softball skills and integrity they would realize that you have brought some important topics to this site. We all have opinions and I believe expressing those opinions in an adult manner is great for the cause. Hope to see you in a few tournaments next year. Take care and God Bless to all.

Discussion: how to solve the illegal bat problem

Einstein, I would vote for two rules (if I were king for a day). First, hit the pitcher and the batter is out. Second, anyone caught using an altered bat gets a life time ban from senior softball. I know that sounds simple and probably won't happen, but that would be my two choices for rule changes. Unfortunately, I'm guilty of hitting the ball up the middle on occasion and have hit a pitcher or two and I feel like crap every time that happens. And, pitching on occasions, I've also carried some bruises away as well. I think hitting the middle is just a part of the game and as much as some of us try to stay away from the pitcher - we don't always succeed. Ok, I'll shut up. Thanks to all for the great discussion.

An altered bat is an altered bat. It's illegal regardless of who swings the bat and if you are caught using an altered bat you should suffer the consequences. Just my thoughts though.

Discussion: Need for an arbitration committee?

Einstein, thanks for the kind words. I had no doubt that you weren't questioning Ralph's integrity, but rather bringing up an issue that came up in PS. In my opinion, you are a class act yourself and one of the top players in senior softball. I enjoy reading the comments on this site and I can always count on you to get something started (in a positive manner that is) that creates an interesting topic. Hope you have a great fall and winter and hopefully I'll see you at a tournament or two next year. God Bless.

Discussion: Need for an arbitration committee?

I've been reading the various chats in on this site for several years now and although I've replied on various issues, this is one that I "have to " comment on. My name is Steve Shannon (absolutely not afraid to give my name or make these same coments face to face with anyone) and I've been playing softball since 1972. I've played with and against the best players in the game (some still active and some retired) along the years and I can state without hesitation that Ralph Godwin is a man of integrity, honesty and simply put - a class act . I wasn't in Palm Springs so I can't address what went on between the Old A's and RB Thomas, but I'd be more than happy to tell any person to their face that acusing Ralph Godwin of cheating is a bold face lie & a cheap shot at a great human being.

Discussion: New rule for the pitcher

In my opinion the best rule to come along in a long time is allowing the pitcher to stand up to 6 ' behind the rubber. I hate to see more changes 'cause it's taking away a big part of the game. I do some pitching and I definitely hit the middle as well (when I have to). I've been hit by batters and unfortunately (and unintentionally) I've hit pitchers, but that's just a part of the game. I agree that balls hit over the fence should be singles (after hitting the HR limit) which most pitchers love because it keeps the batter from hitting the middle (in most cases). Just my opinion though. Happy Turkey Day to all.

King of Pain,
My name is Steve Shannon. I live in Springfield, Virginia. I served 21 years in the US Army, fought for my country, and would be more than glad to tell you face to face that you are gutless. You obviously don't play competitive softball so you want to fullfill your dreams by being "namelss". What are you afraid of. The rest of us are just old time softball players that love the game, express our opinions, and not afraid to face one another.

Mike,
If I lived in CA I would play on your team in a heartbeat. You have a class team from top to bottom. For the first time since 1973 I only played locally and didn't miss playing in national tournaments this past year and as of now probably won't play tournaments next year either. I enjoyed spending my weekends with my grandbaby or riding my Harley (even old kids needs toys). But, you never know about us softball junkies. We think we want to retire, but then we go out to the field, see all the old teammates playing and you suddenly get the feeling again. Hope you have a great winter and I'll stay in touch.
God Bless,
Steve

Walkoff,
Not sure who you directed your comment to, but I can assure you that in my case I've made the all tourney team many times and that doesn't change my feelings in the least. Maybe some ego's need stroking and if that's the case, then give them all the trophies.

LA,
I totally agree with you 100%. Do away with the all tournament team and just play and have fun. There is no doubt that most selections are well deserved, but then you have the political selections. As for the Hall of Fame, I totally support inductions, but believe someone should figure out another way for nomination and selection.

Why don't all these associations just let us play softball. All these stupid rules are running good people out of the sport.

Mike, not sure about next year yet. There is talk of a real good sponsor wanting to put together a Virginia team so I'll wait and see what happens. I just needed a break this year and I've also been over to the sand box on business a couple of times this summer so my mind was else where. I knew Mike Rose (Damon's) would have a good team. I missed playing for him this year and simply put, Mike is a class act. I had the chance to play with another team, but had no intention of doing so. If I had wanted to play I would have been with Damon's. Take care and enjoy the fall and winter and I might just see you next year. I'll stay in touch.
