Discussion: Armed Forced: Did you Serve?

I'm a retired Chief Warrant Officer; served 22 great years (71-93); served most of my career as a counterintelligence officer working primarily in special ops assignments; got a bunch of medals, but my most important document was my retirement papers. I had a great career serving with some of the finest officers, NCO's, and enlisted troops in the military and I'm still working as a Department of Army Civilian (GS15) at Fort Belvoir, VA.

Discussion: What do you think about Major/Major Plus tournaments?

I'm about to start my third year of senior softball (I'm 52) and I'm having a blast. My first two seasons were at the Major Plus level with Fergie's and Damon's. It was great playing against some of my old softball buddies and I got to meet guys I had heard of, but never had the chance to meet in person. I just wish there was one Major division which would include the Major Plus and Major Teams. That would give everyone a chance to play different teams once in a while. However, I'm enjoying playing as a senior and look forward to seeing you all again (starting Sat in Glen Burnie).
God Bless you all,
Steve Shannon

Discussion: Ultra II Beyond 2005

Isn't it great to live in a country where we have choices. My personal choice is to play softball and keep the U2 for those of you that have the desire to use it. If you are concerned about getting hurt, play another sport. I tried golf and got hit in the head with an errant ball. Too bad it was my own ball bouncing off of a tree that just happened to be to darn close to where I was standing. So, I'm sticking with softball 'cause it's less dangerous - at least to me. So many pitchers have pointed out that with the U2 fewer guys are going up the middle. Ok, just my wee thoughts again. Look forward to seeing all of you 50 plus guys this year. Best of luck to all.

Stoneman: It's extremely frustrating when you find inconsistency within your local leagues and I believe most of us have experienced the same type of frustrations. Although I'm just starting my third year of senior softball (but my 33rd year of playing slowpitch softball), I've played in most of the senior national tournaments with Fergie's and Damon's over the past two seasons and my experience has been very positive (with the umpiring.) In my opinion (this is key since we all have an opinion), the overall umpiring has been consistent, fair, and I've noticed that the older umps have as much fun as the players. I've even joked with an umpire when he made the wrong call and later stated to me (in private) that he probably made the wrong call. I think the only reason he admitted that he made the wrong call was because I initially told him I thought he blew the call, but didn't make a scene or stay on him for it. I believe umps can make a wrong call or decision just as we, as players, make errors and have some major brain cramps. I'm certainly guilty of doing both, but now I can blame them on getting old. : ) I'm just thankful that I still have my health and have the opportunity just to be on the field and participate. I've been fortunate to play at all levels (from Class B to Major Plus) and even played on 10 national championship teams, but playing in the senior's the past two season has been the most fullfilling. Hopefully, your experience will be more positive for you this season.

One of our pitchers last year has worn hockey shin guards for years. Some players may make fun of him, but he certainly hasn't been hurt since wearing them.

I wouldn't be in favor of the screen, but I still believe batters would stay away from the middle a little more (and hit the pitcher less) if it was an automatic out. Of course if I were King for a day, I would let the seniors play real softball like we use to and not create rules to please a few people.

I vote that the Ultra II should be legal if the following recommendations are also adopted:
1. Move the bases to 70'.
2. If the ball is touched by the pitcher then the batter is automatically out and runners can't advance. Belive this would keep batters from using the pitcher as a target (although I don't believe batters truly target the pitcher to injure them.)
Just my wee thoughts.

Discussion: New Major and Major-Plus Regional Restrictions for 2005

Although I've played softball for the past 32 years, I am about to start my third year of senior softball. I've had the priviledge to play for Fergie's my first year and Damon's this past year. I enjoy playing the 50 plus division because I love and thrive on the competition. I've had an opportunity to play against some of the best competitors in the history of the game and now I'm finding that a large portion of those softball legends (at the 50 plus division) are frustrated with all the rules and basically saying "screw it"! Since there are only 12-15 teams (max) that want to play in the 50 plus division I would like to see the board let those teams pick up a couple of players from anywhere. In the 50 plus we end up playing the same teams anyway, so let the teams load up, let us play "real softball" (no 5 run per innings crap), and let the best team win. Just my thoughts. Not sure who I'll be playing for this year, but I know I look forward to seeing my old friends as well as the new ones I've made the past two years. (From Steve Shannon, Springfield, VA)

Mike Kelly,
Congrats on the win. In my opinion this was the best competition I've seen this year. Although I would have loved to been playing in the championship game it's a good feeling knowing that a team with class won the tournament. Again, congrats and hopefully we'll see you in Nov (if Damon's makes the trip.)

BillMac, JAH#4, Andy25, Senior11, & Mike Kelly,
Thanks for the congrats. I've been thinking (and talking) about retiring from softball for the last several years and everytime I get around all of you guys I realize that softball is just a big part of me. I look forward to competing with and against you all for many years to come. I'm sure we'll have all our regular battles in Vegas and I look forward to seeing you all.

Discussion: De Moines format

I like the idea that we can play "real softball" and not have all the BS (5 runs per inning, etc), but the format does in fact cause teams to lose on purpose. During one of our games a player from the other team stated that they would forfeit the game if they were in the lead in the last inning. Just let major and major plus teams play against each other and AAA & AA play each other.
