Western National Championships
We played in the 65 division in the Western Nationals and concluded on Thursday. To date, I have seen neither seeding nor bracket results while the Eastern Championships which were played at the exact same time have FINAL results posted! Is Dave in NC? I know he was not in Sacramento. Is that the difference ?

That's the difference ... Flying out of Raleigh at 6:30 AM PDT and back in Sacramento office by 2:00 or so ... Will see what I can do tomorrow other than dealing with jet lag ...

4 day event 127 teams 5 venues ages 8-18 scores were poated no later than 1 hour after the conclusion of the games. Might be a software issue but again, I believe it to be a priority issue.

Well here is the 60'S AAA facts. Bay Supporters won the if game against Over The Edge by a score 14-12. Ote had to beat them twice to win it all and just ran out of gas if the if game. Aro Glass took third place. Congratulation to Bay Supporters on winning the Western Nationals and a Class Act team. Hope to see you guys again in Las Vegas at the Worlds.

60 M+- the Old Dawgs rallied back to double dip Joe Browns and win it. Congratulations to them-they played very tough "D" and hit well in tough hitting environment-soft balls and a breeze mostly blowing in from right. Very few HR's and very low scoring games. I hope your right fielder is alright after crashing into the same section of fence 3 times-great effort there. You should get that section and put it into your trophy case! LOL Timberworks also played hard-just coming up short in several games. It was a pleasure playing you guys! See you in Vegas.

Swing (Rich) Now that you're the Cal-Cup & Western Nationals 2013 Champs... Should we welcome the Nor Cal Warriors to SSUSA's Major + Division?.....If you don't get moved up for Vegas after winning 2 tournaments, then SSUSA should move us (Rated Athletics) back to 50 Majors!!! I know it won't happen because of how flawed SSUSA's system is when it comes to ratings (i.E. George) So please enjoy your winnings & I hope you guys get to win the triple Crown for your great 2013 season!

Hey Rj, thanks! I think we still need to get that beer... I hear they base it on how many HRs you hit.. so if that's the case we don't hit that many.. mostly timely hitting and great D is how we win... so who knows.. we will cross that bridge when we get to it.. Nice almost No hitter you threw... I give Right field an E on that last one.. Good job!

We'll see what we can do to get the Western Nationals back to the Denver (Aurora) area again next year to the excellent 12 field complex where it was last year. We heard nothing like I see here about the fields. They are some of the best grass fields in the country! To SS USA it's "make a buck". To the teams, they want a well run tournament and great fields. Appears you only got one out of two in Sacramento.

I hope SS USA staff reads this thread! It's not always about the dollars. I tried to impress this fact on the staff last year but it was all about who put the most dollars up for this year.

I realize there are more teams in California but you had 104 teams and almost 4 out of 5 were from California, more than even attended the California Cup by at least 20 to 25 teams. No teams east of Colorado attended this year. How does that make this a true Western Nationals?

Congrats to Top Gun in winning the 60 Major. Enviro-Vac had to beat them twice in the finals and managed one of two. Lost the IF game by a run. Lot of low scoring games this weekend and tired legs from running hard and to far for balls that died in the grass.

Top-Gun deserved the win and are a very good team with a bunch of classy players.

Hey Brock, a lot of the Tourneys have fancy names, but who can actually call any of them True in the wording. There are a lot of good to great teams not making trips across country primarily because of $$$$$! I'm in CA, so why would we spend 2k to travel to Florida or Colorado when we can play in our Backyard... Look at SPA, it's not around in Northern CA this year. Not to many teams from northern CA playing that sanction.... it's all about the $$$$ for most! Closest thing we will get to an actual National championship will be SSUSA in Vegas! IMO

Brock,
You are correct regarding the number of teams in the the Western National. When the tournament was in Col. last year, it drew 89 teams (far more than Washington with 51 two years ago). Fifteen teams more generates over $8,000 more. You are correct when it involves money. It could also be argued that the tournament this year was stronger, due to more teams entered. However, I would rather see the tournament in Aurora than Washington. I hate to mention it, but Washington was a mistake.

The SSUSA also thought highly of the fields in Aurora. That is why Aurora was given a tournament. It will be interesting to see how many teams show up.

Brock-I will be there in Aurora with a 50 M team from Albuquerque, but after pulling a hamstring in Sacramento in the first game, I will only be doing enough to qualify with them for Vegas. I do agree, though, that when a Mike Adair hits a rocket single and it stops before it gets to the outfielder, that the grass is way to thick.
Swing-our Joe Browns team averaged 2 home runs a game and our two top hitters got 4 each. Definitely not a hitting environment, for sure.
Kudos, though, for the way it was run. Smooth-great job.

Swing, I don't disagree with you. I know CA has way more teams than any other state and you can basically play somewhere close every weekend but with 89 teams last year we had teams from Minnesota and Missouri to Texas, all the West Coast states and states in between. That's what I meant about a "true" Western Nationals. It's supposed to include everyone from the Mississippi River west. Just as you say you're not going to spend the money to go to Colorado or Florida, most teams very far east aren't going to spend the money to attend in CA. This year is a good example. Five teams from Colorado and none from states south, north or east of Colorado. Our Scrap Iron teams have no choice but to travel if they want to play in very many tournaments.

Anyway, as I've said to Terry H several times, when they have the Western Nationals in CA, it looks like another California Cup. Yes, it's financially advantageous for SS USA to have it there but it's not reflective of a cross section of teams west of the Mississippi.

Denver(Aurora) is about as centrally located for the Western Nationals as anywhere west of the Mississippi and as others have said, we used a great 12 field complex where nobody, to my knowledge, complained about the fields. That's why I said what I did. You had a well run tournament but people like to play on well maintained fields also. Remember the chatter last year after the Worlds in Vegas. Some of the fields were terrible. People didn't like that. Will there be bad fields again this year. You bet there will be. Will people complain again? I think you know the answer.

I want to thank all the teams that are coming to Aurora in about ten days. You won't be disappointed in the fields and I'm sure SS USA will do their usual great job in running it.

Curveball, like others, I'm still waiting for the results to be posted. Dave Dowell must be the only person they have that can do this. He needs an assistant so he can catch up!

I think the Colorado Rcckies 55 AA team got second and our 70s major team did bad but I'm not sure how bad. Not sure about the other three.

Brock, I would love to play in Aurora! I have heard nothing but good things about the fields there... to Date the nicest complex I've played at is in Reno at Golden Eagle in Sparks and I've had others tell me about Aurora being right up there.. We will have to make it out there one of these years for one of our travel Tourneys!

Allan55, the tournament detail for Aurora shows only 41 teams signed up for the Rocky Mountain Championships. Deadline for entries was August 2.
Out Texas Makulis team played in the Western Nationals in Aurora last year and my wife and I really enjoyed the complex and the Aurora area! For us, it was a "drive" tournament, so expenses were not too bad.
I just got back from playing in the Western Nationals in Sacramento this year with Omen from California. Although there were 104 teams, as was stated above, most were from California (71 by my count). Not one Texas team was on the list. We played at the Sacramento Softball Complex and the fields were below par - all needed to be mowed and some were sopping wet from too much watering from the sprinkler system. Otherwise, the fields were well-maintained between games.
I would certainly support moving the Western Nationals back to Aurora.

Supporting the move to CO, is simple just write SSUSA a check for about $8000.00. So they can recoup the profits that they can earn. SSUSA is a business and it is designed to make money, you do realize the revunes that they earn from other areas besides entry fee. Hotel lodging and a few others areas. I can honestly say I have never once played in a tournament where somebody didn't complain about something.

LeeLee,
You have nailed it. If Aurora threw a sizable check to offset fewer tourney entrants, that would be helpful. However, I feel it might be time to move it to Reno next year. I think that would move the tourney to an attractive venue. Drawing over 200 teams to Rock'n Reno this year was fantastic. I know teams would love the playing conditions at Golden Eagle. I know some would say that is not moving the tournament far enough East. However, the last time the Western National was in Salt Lake City, Utah, it only drew 63 teams. That ended up slightly better than Washington...which wasn't saying much.

Hey All, I'm very aware of the process. I worked on getting the Western Nationals to Denver for three years before it happened. I know what their requirements are. When we did land the Western Nationals, Terry was figuring on 50 teams and I was hoping for 100. We had 89. The requirements they have for the Rocky Mountain Championships are less than for the Western Nationals which is the first leg of the Triple Crown. Being a new tournament this year, Terry was figuring about 50 teams for the RM Championships for the first year. For several reasons that I won't enumerate here but Terry knows, I was not that optimistic. We hope to grow it from here because it will be played at the same great complex. Reno and Aurora are different in that the Aurora fields are grass but anyone who has played there would tell you the grass is like a carpet. Unless Terry is willing to accept less for the Western Nationals in the future it probably won't get played there again because the Visit Aurora Tourism Board hasn't found any new money and the Scrap Iron Club doesn't feel we can continue to throw money in the pot to make it happen on a regular basis.

As I've said before, I think teams want two things when they play tournaments. They want good fields and a well run tournament. Last year you got both in Aurora. This year it appears you got one of the two. As long as money means more to SS USA than well maintained fields, we will find out with time what is really important to teams. That's why we hope to grow the RM Championships in future years. Denver is relatively easy to get to and flights are reasonable in comparison. We hope teams attending this year have a good experience so the word spreads.

I'm actually playing with Rusty's in Arizona this year so I'm sure I'll see some of you at the Worlds in Vegas. Because of the Master Collision 60s team I played with the last several years plus a 65 Scrap Iron major team that folded for lack of players, I had a major plus tag and there was no Scrap Iron team at the 65 level above AAA. Then Master Collision folded before they were moved back to major but I had already committed to Rusty's for this year. That's another issue that has been hashed over on this message board a number of times. I'm not going there.

Duke, that would be correct ! Git-R-Done 55 was able to claim the Championship :O) It was a pretty tight Tourney any of the Teams could have won. The Ball was Dead, due to heat & humidity. We were able to adjust our game, (no HR's out of the park), and played outstanding Defense. Our Defense in the end made the difference.1st AAA win for us ! So feeling good. Thanks.

Aurora is a great complex. 12 wonderful fields. Don't let the 325' fences scare anybody. It's like playing on a 300' fence with the altitude. Our 55 major team played last year and had a great time but unfortunately we could not get enough to make the trip this year. Brock you are so right $$$$ talk and California has more clout than Denver.
