Growth of the 40 division
I was looking at the number of teams in the 40 division coming to Las Vegas this year and was happy to see that 45 teams are listed. SSUSA has done an amazing job at growing this age group over the past 8 years. I played in the 40 division in 2005 and we had 5 teams. Out of curiosity I checked the ASA website and they had 33 teams for their year end event in 2005. This year ASA had 5 and SSUSA now is the tournament to attend. A number of years a group of us were invited to speak about the 40's at the senior convention in Tucson and we pitched the 40's to SSUSA, SPA, LVSSA, UTRIP and ASA which was the king of the 40's back then. The biggest excuse we heard from the associations (except ASA) was that 40's were not seniors (probably true), our response was eventually we would be and if you build it they would come and more importantly stay with whomever figured it out. Looking back the 40 division was my favorite time to play.

I've been told there is a gradual but significant shift
in the 40's thinking up here in the NW. The 5 teams
now playing in our area (3 Major, 2 AAA) and attending
local SSUSA events are having a great time and they're
spreading the word. I expect we could have 10 teams
from the NW by 2015. If that trend spreads throughout
the country there could be 90 teams at Worlds in a
couple years!

So any of you 40's who frequent the message board, what
do you really like about SSUSA, beyond the obvious 5GG
and bat/ball combination?

Also, what can we do to attract the average 40's
players?
