TAMPA SPA WORLD RECAP
SPA Winter World this past weekend saw some great ballgames some real highing games. But the fields was some of the worst that this player has ever played on and the waits between games needs some attention. Games between pool and tourney play teams has to sit and wait up to 5 hrs with no one telling the teams they could leave or stay. with some of the team had a 45 min trip back to their hotel they could not leave. the weather was very good the ball was good. But there was a lot of Pitchers that was hit this weekend the bases and the mound was short from SPA standards with little or no field between games, bad hops everywhere. also the infield was short with a big lip at the edge of the grass. I beleive as long as the pool play has AA teams that plays Major and Major + teams we are going to have players getting hurt we need to have not to someting in place not to play before 1 level. with the these fields and some games AA vs Major + teams nothing can come out good.
But the games in tourney play was very good in the major 55 bracket the Fla Storm , LL roofing, Fla gulfshore 60 team playing down we had some great games that was close on every game played.

Don, you are right about the small infields. Playing first base, the grass was only about 7 or 8 feet behind where I normally play. When I neede to play deep for a left handed batter I would be 6 or 7 feet in to the grass.

I do think that SPA should have had official scorekeepers. Too many arguments could arise because of disagreements between each team's score books. In our last game no one knew for sure how many hr had been hit by either side.

One last thing Don, what time did you finish your last game on Saturday? We left there after midnight and you were just in your first inning. I'll bet it was near 2:00am.

Bruce we left about 2 30 am we our game when 7 innings and nip and tuck all the way with Ed Rose's team , Great game Winky did a good job keeping our big hitter off their game. I think the final score was like 37 to 31 had some fun that game playing some classly 60 team I glad it was limited HR I was glad to stay as close as we did. Call me sometimes

Yes you are so right JAH it was after 2am when that game was over. I had the fortune of being the plate umpire for that game and I must agree that the 2 teams were very classy and I enjoyed some good softball even if it was early in the morning. I will also agree that the fields were not up to standards and I have voiced my opinion to the tournament organizers also. I hope this tournament grows and becomes larger next year. I also hope I get to umpire some more of your games around the country .I sure enjoyed it alot. You have a good classy team.

You and your base umpire was two of the best we had in the tourney. seem like you had as much fun umping the game as we had playing. I was the one playing first that had the pulled hamstring. but the good fellowship between players and umpires is worth it weigh in gold. We lost the game on the scoreboard but won with the memory of playing that game playing the game the way senior softball was meant to be was it first started BEING FUN.

Don ...thanks for the nice compliment. Mike and I have umped together for several years now all over the country. We did enjoy ourselves. Believe me working a game with 2 classy teams makes it alot easier and alot more fun to be there. Thanks for the good time. Sorry you were hurt. I do hope I get to call more of your games and see you all again soon
