You Make the Call - Infield Fly
Men on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Batter hits high pop behind 2nd base. Umpire calls Infield Fly. The infielders start towards the ball and the ump yells, "I made a mistake" as it became clear that no one had a chance to catch the ball. The ball hits the ground and the runners take off for 2nd and 3rd, and the batter runs to 1st. Umpire calls everyone safe and apologizes. The defensive team erupts! Was the ump correct?

Would the call change if both runners stayed on base and the batter never ran 1st, and the defense turned a triple play?

i wrote this scenario up and sent it to the national uic about 7yrs ago because I witnessed the same thing. His response was that umpires must be responsible for their actions. Once the call is made there is no turning back....(like calling a foul ball to soon and having curve back in fair) batter is out and runners advance at their own risk. That is why they teach you not to call INF to early....and now the rule change helps you out in that you can call it after the play, if you didnt call it.

That umpire blew it!! Once the call is made that's it, it stands no matter if it's blatantly wrong or not.

Correct call stick8. Should have been batter is out and runners are on second and third advancing at their own risk.

Similar to the situation in Birmingham, umpire calls strike but when the batter complains she changes it to illegal pitch! lol

yes, it did. She was constantly laughing and giggling, so much that our opposing coach had a talk with her.
I'm all for having fun but she was out of line.

Stick, we were well in control of the game so we didn't complain.
We need another thread about illegal pitches! lol!

Bruce, if I found out one of the umpires in my crew did that they wouldn't be umpiring for me any more.
