Defensive Philsophy @ World Masters
Yesterday at the World Masters, Sunset Park, the 50's Majors were playing.
Several teams used a 3 outfielder and 5 infielder defensive set up instead of the usual 4 outfielder/4 infielder defense.

With the way these guys hit, what is the reasoning for this type of set up?

Considering the power these guys have and the speed of the defense. They have to try and hit the gaps with power. A mistake and the ball goes out. Thus they try to hit down through the infield and consequently the defense responds with the 5 man. It works for the 40/50's M+ and some 55 M+. I do not believe the same type of defense is effective in the 60's, due to a natural loss of unbridled power, 60 year old players have no problem going for the gaps especially since we rarely get our 9 HRs a game. Except for the Worlds when we use the ROCK, then a higher percentage of teams will reach the HR limit.

Also, in the older age groups you will run an outfield to death using the 5-man unless you have enough guys to rotate guys around in the outfield. In the 65s, we run the traditional 4-man OF and still rotate guys in and out to keep them fresh especially if they are leading off in our next at bat,
