Worlds in Vegas
I just returned from AAA 50's Worlds in Vegas, overall a very good experience. I think for the most part SSUSA does a good job. I do have one complaint that I would like to get opinions on. I fully understand that the tourney directors have no control over the weather so no one needs to waste their time telling me that. I also understand the need to cut games to one hour in an attempt to get back on schedule. Our situation was this, our 5th game was scheduled for 430pm Saturday afternoon against AZ Dawgs (good team, good guys) the game started (as scheduled) at 430, however it was still played as a 1 hour, 5 inning game. We lost by 3 or 4 runs and that was the end of our tourney. For what we paid to play in this event, not even looking at travel from Washington, why was a game that was played at the right time cut off at 1 hour? When I asked the director about this, his response was 'of the 300 some games he had to schedule, that might have been his one mistake'. I really don't think that is an acceptable answer. When the event got back on schedule full games should have been played. I don't think SSUSA understands that ASA and USSSA are making serious pushes to get a piece of the pie that we spend on these events as players and teams. SSUSA is a fantastic organization but really needs to listen to their customers, don't make everyone go to Lorenzei to find out when their next game is, make sure fields are in playable condition, don't limit games to one hour when you are on schedule. These don't seem like unreasonable requests.

Couldn't agree with you more. Your point about the cost for travel and entry is not small amount. In today's age of computers, I don't understand how they can't establish a real time bracket and with an official at each of the venues, a immediate posting of brackets would save teams time from the constant hurry up and wait. The other issue I heard constant complaints about was too often, one ump per game. Trust me, we all understand how hard it is to have so many venues going at once along with the corralling of the moving parts. But at these cost, two officials per game in this prestigious tournament should be a given. With other competitors seeking to grab a piece of the pie, it's the little things like this that will keep SSUSA above them.

We had a situation at Lorenzi that really infuriated some of us. As we moved into the dugout, our umpire informed both teams that we were on the clock. The grounds crew had just began to drag the infield. We appealed to the umpire to restart the clock when the crew left but we were ignored.

At the start of the fifth inning we were told we had 16 minutes left and when the top of the sixth arrived he announced open inning. The fifth inning wasn't an exceptionally long inning.
It probably would have been good if we had kept a clock along with the umpire.

Logistics were good but only having one umpire in double elimination games just isn't acceptable, especially when he doesn't know the rules and then cops an attitude when we tried to ask questions. Called batter out for stepping on line, not out of box, doesn't know it's the location of the ball for fair and foul not the fielder, doesn't call batter out for retreating from first, and totally misses call when 3rd base coach all but tackles runner to stop him from scoring. Surely it's bad enough to only have one umpire but totally incompetent just isn't acceptable, they were all easy calls. I know we are not the Majors with instant replay but he didn't need instant replay, just the knowledge to make the correct calls. Then when we had him the second time it was all about him and not the game, fortunately he had a good partner the second time.

jimperry19 ... Thank you for your observations ... Here is what I believe is your principal concern: Why was a bracket game that went off as scheduled played under a shortened format? ... The answer is that the Field Director misunderstood the application of Rulebook §11.1(1) for making up the lost games from the Friday evening storm and made a mistake ... I am the author of the 1,700+ game master schedule for the event and was part of a group (including Terry Hennessy, Fran Dowell and all of the affected Field Directors) that performed the adverse-weather reschedule of the 40 or so games lost on Friday night across several playing venues ...

In the matter of the 139-game 50-AAA bracket, we lost the eight 5:30 PM games that were underway and the six 7:00 PM games in their entirety on Friday evening ... Those games would have taken three hours to complete on the schedule ... Our inclement weather make-up procedure calls for 5-inning games until the schedule is back on time, under our belief that playing modified games is preferable to canceling games ...

Losing three hours on Friday would calculate to the one hour shortened games for the first six rounds of games (7:30 AM through 12:30 PM) on Saturday and being back on schedule (in theory) by 1:30 PM ... Games after that time should have reverted back to the full hour and a half schedule if all was running as planned ... In a worst case situation, maybe one more round of shortened games would have been required, but certainly not as late as your 4:30 PM game ...

This was our mistake, for which we apologize, and is a mistake we will learn from ...

We hope this is helpful in understanding what happened and how it did ...
