Why Not Reward Performance?
MLB - best record means home field advantage, same in the NFL, NBA, NHL. In SSUSA events, however, best record in a tournament earns you a 50/50 coin flip for the final game. Why, exactly? Teams come through undefeated and earn nothing. Why do they not get to be home team in the final game? I have brought this up before, and have received vigorous head nods of agreement from SSUSA officials all the way to the top. Good point, can't see a problem with it. This would be far less special, then say, rewarding the two participants in the National Championship games with the #1 & #2 seeds. When I brought it up to an SSUSA director (who votes on rule changes) last week in Las Vegas, again I was told that it made sense. Then he told me that this has never come up in the rules meetings. Really, how hard would it be to discuss and vote on this? Here, I'll even write the proposed change for you.

Proposed - In elimination play, the team coming through the winner's bracket to the final game automatically earns home team status. In the event of an "if" game, a coin flip will determine home team. All in favor . . . .

Donnie that's so novel and creative where did you come up with that idea? I know there is an association in Southern California that implemented this policy last September that now does this. They got rave reviews for making the seeding games worth something. Could you have somehow got the idea from them? Or did I get it from you :O) You see great minds do think alike. Have a great weekend.

If being the home team is such a big deal.....

Then explain why is the KC Royals and SF Giants are still in post season?

Don, I agree 100%. I have played in tournaments for over 40 years and the Senior Softball tournnaments are the only ones that have not awarded the winners bracket team the home field choice. We just won the 65 AAA in Vegas and were the visitors in the Championship game. We won it, but still should have been given the choice to be home team. The other thing that needs to be looked at is the automatic seeding for the East and West coast champions.

Don ... A couple of quick observations ... The SSUSA Field Director at your park in Las Vegas, although he does attend the sessions, is not a voting member of the SSUSA Rules Committee ... Here's what the motion should probably be, to maintain fairness ...

Proposed - In elimination play, the team coming through the winner's bracket to the final game automatically earns the option to select home team status. In the event of an "If" game, a coin flip will determine the team winning Championship Game #1 shall have the option to select home team status. All in favor . . . .

Some teams have expressed a desire to be Visitor and your proposal would deny them that choice because they are unbeaten ... This final two game series becomes, in effect, a true "Home and Home" affair as modified above, which is fair ... My personal view is that your proposal would not be able to "count to seven" on the 13-member Rules Committee vote otherwise ...

Jeez, isn't the fact that the team from the loser's bracket will have played more games (sometimes, many more games) advantage enough for the team in the winner's bracket. Maybe the team from the loser's bracket should spot them some runs, also.

Dave Dowell, that's a great point and your proposal works for me. If you've earned it by winning the winners bracket, and want to bat first, you've earned the right to choose. If you win the first championship game, you've then earned the right to choose.

To "?", the Royals and Giants did not earn home field, they put themselves in that position. They got hot, and are doing well. Same thing can happen in a senior tournament, and does all the time. My point is, the winners bracket winner has done something no other team has done in a tournament. Therefore, IMHO, they have earned the right to choose.

There are enough equalizers in our sport, it should not be a problem to tip the cap to the undefeated team by letting them choose when to bat in the championship game.

So Dave Dowell, I'm counting on you to bring up your modified motion at the rules meeting this year. Deal?

Tate22, USSSA has a similar rule in their NIT's and conference tournaments. By rule, whoever wins the winners bracket is automatically home team for the first game of the championship. If it goes to the 'if' game it's a coin flip. Many like to call that the "Resmondo rule" because when the powerhouse Resmondo teams won the flip they'd always take visitors and score a bunch of runs--many times putting the game out of reach before the other team even batted.

We had the same conversation last week in Vegas. Ours was centered on the higher seeded team being given the option of home or visitor. This would add to the importance of doing well in pool play.

What's the Big Deal?

Is there really any BIG home field advantage when a team from Utah plays a team from Nevada in a Texas senior softball tournament?

?, 3 reasons why the Royals and Giants are still playing. 1)pitching 2)defense
3)clutch hitting. It wouldn't surprise me to see a KC-SF world series.

You are absolutely correct!

And to think they did all that by entering the playoffs as a Wild Card team without the advantage of being "home team".

Home team is an advantage because you know how many runs going in you have to score. In senior softball you are allowed 5 an inning, so it is not the same as the really good young teams where they can score enough in the top of the inning to intimidate the other team. If a team selects visitors they really are planning for a very good open inning, but that is putting a lot on the open inning being a big one.

They do have some statistics in the MLB on the advantage of home team, (through 2008) one place is
http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/2850

This is a stat on playoffs and the edge to the home team is .548

Softball is a much higher scoring and easier to score game so I would thing it would be a higher winning percentage.

If you really wanted to reward performance then why have a Home Run limit? why not allow unlimited HRs at each level and then the better teams will move quicker and games would get over quicker. Granted, not every team hits the limit of HR every game; but why punish those that do reach the limit?
