The Villages softball tournament
Any one coming to the villages softball tournament Oct. 17,18,19 ? I heard that the Canseco brothers were coming again this year. Not sure who they are playing for. Possibly the host team. As usual, there will be a home run hitting contest. Dave Reed of Hollis-Rose has won this event a couple of times in the past. The Villages top home run threats are Hank Culley and Dave Norvall. Should be a lot of good softball.

Hi leftybob- the canseco's and miami power won this 50's tournament last october, but the rumor at the fiield today was that they were going to play for the villages. Ossie lives nearby in Ocala, and Jose was looking to establish residency there also. Thanks for posting the teams. I will post the winners on Sunday nite.

what a surprise the big boys didn't participate in the HR contest...it is a lot easier to brag about how you are THEE best power hitter in the 50's than go out and prove it......it's like the bully in class, everyone backs down from him because he puffs out his chest but as soon as he is confronted, he turns tail and runs away....let the excuses begin

A great deal of people skipped the home run derby for the same reason EVERYONE was upset at this years tournament.
The derby and the tournament were played with the used rec league balls that some didn't even have printing on anymore. Hank Garris one of the greatest hitters ever in the game hit 4 barely and 1 bomb to win the derby. One of balls used in the Miami Power Team 1 losers bracket final actually had a broken core. I bounced it on the sidewalk and it went sideways. When you hit a 44-375 ball in the early morning with high 50's temps it should sound like a cannon going off not like a wet sponge. Anyone associated with running this tournament should be totally ashamed, embarrassed and called out for being so cheap and or clueless.

Not real sure what the "big boys" had to prove, hitting balls over a 300 foot fence. You are only allowed 1 representative from each team to be in the derby anyways. Maybe they figured it would be appropriate to let one of their Amateur teammates participate instead.. JMO

Hi PJ3P-I find it interesting that you mention Miami Power-Team 1 losers bracket final game. I watched the game on field 3. It was the first game of the day on Sunday morning. Team 1 Sports hit 4 home runs in the first inning alone and proceeded to out homer every team in the tournament. In the 2 games against Bradenton Blast ,Team 1 scored 29 and 24 runs with a lot of home runs. Some of the balls must have been good, or maybe they went over the fence sideways. Good luck with your team. Maybe the tournament will be better next year.

Lefty, I heard that after hitting some of the balls in bp, both declined to participate. As far as Team 1, they easily had the most power of any team there and they did an excellent job of using the wind that was blowing out to right center. Their pitcher did an excellent job keeping their opponents from doing the same. I can assure you that none of the 50 Gold teams were happy with the balls. In fact not a single person I spoke to was. And I asked a lot of teams. We will just have to hope whoever runs it next year will allow decent balls to be provided. The idea that such a great tournament would be played with balls that had been used all year by the rec league is a joke.

Just curious, did Ozzie or Jose get in the home run derby last year? If I remember correctly neither one
participated in 2012.

PJ3P....they have been using Trump 44/375 balls every year nothing different...Each game started with 2 new balls....and yes the back up balls were used just like every other tour. LOL the funny thing about the used balls they were saved from the Div 5 neighborhood League games the majority of players in these leagues are 70's and 80's and they use single wall bats... I doubt that any of them were worn out...I talked to one of the players that were complaining about the balls after their team had been beaten....I asked him what was the score he told me it was something like 21/7...my response to him was well why did you let them switch to the good balls every time the other team was at bat???

BJ, We were using balls that no longer had printing on them. Yes every once in a while you would hit one that was somewhat ok. But the majority of the balls were very old. 44-375 balls do not go splat in 60 degree weather unless they are very old. I hit Trump 44-375 balls in league every week and once a month in the Florida Half Century. These balls were worse than anything we hit all year long including in the hottest months of the year. 50 Major Plus or even 50 Major teams should never go an entire game without a home run. I'll just make sure to remind teams of how the people at the Villages think its funny to make teams play a tournament with year old balls. You talked to one player, I talked to a bunch of people who live in and play ball in the Villages and they said that they are sick of the crappy that they have to use. The same ones they use every day of the week that were used in the tournament. A three day tournament is an expensive proposition for players. If The Villages wants to be that insanely cheap, there is no reason to play there anymore.

Rumors flying around that The Villages plans to use the same crappy balls that they use all year long in their daily leagues. It's really sad for such a great annual tournament to do something so stupid.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to play in a tournament that is so expensive [entry and hotels]and then have to hit total trash for softballs.
