Donnie, It looks like we have finally got our team together. We, All State Miken, are 3-0 in pool play. We beat Specialty Tank 20-14, Conn SportSplex 29-23 and Ploog 27-17.
Our managers chose to use 11 in the field against the 50+ teams although most of us wanted to play them straight up.
Is there any truth to the rumor that your team is moving to 60+? I'm hoping we will get a chance to play you again next year as we enjoy playing you.

Bruce,
What do you mean you played 11 in field against the 50's? Was that 11 def. people? If so that was a great bit of help.
You guys have a strong team and will only get better. Good luck with the de.
We are still in limbo on next year. We are trying to find some sponsors and as you know we have a lot of old guys on our team. We have about 6- 60 guys and 6- 55 guys. We are stuck in the middle. Do you have some suggestions for us?

thanks,
donnie

Donnie ... In the 50s Major-Plus, Specialty Tank defeated Ploog Construction in the first two games of the Best 2 of 3, with a 52-35 win in the final ... In the 55s, All State / Miken defeated the Connecticut Sportsplex in the "If" game by the score of 44-21 to win the title ... DAVE

i fill sure that the cool weather might have run up the scores along with the ultra and combat bats. You are right, the seniors do not need these hot bats. The asa bats would do just fine. At this age level these guys can hit with about any bat and still score a lot of runs.
Congratulations to Specialty Tank 50's and Old South/ Miken 55's on there wins.
Hope to see you guys next year.

Ed Rose's team won the 60 Major Plus. The 60's and 55's played at another complex so I don't know of any other results.

As for the bats, I didn't hear of anyone there complaining about bats. Why would those here complain?? Remember these are Major + teams, we should score a lot of runs.
In my opinion if we used ASA 98mph bats there would be several that I feel may have been altered. Leave the U2 alone so we don't have to worry about painted bats.

Those who commented on the high scores in the 50 Major and Major + should suggest sending those guys out to where the 60 Major + played, Collier in Naples. The fences were AT LEAST 320 but there were still some home runs hit. How big were the fields in Fort Myers.

Congratulations to my good friends on Team Florida for winning the 60 Major + title. We at least made them play the "IF" game! Dave Reed was outstanding as was there whole defense. Winky kept us off balance just enough. Both Championship games were "wars" but they had too much for us.

Great tournament and the facility was very nice. The balls were good (Trumps) and Florida was beautiful. The only complaint I had was we stayed in Fort Myers not knowing we would have to drive almost an hour each way to Naples to play. Made for extremely long days.

Hope everyone has a great winter and look forward to seeing everyone next year!

Gary, if you look at my replies on altered bats I have never sugguested that we do away with U2's. When SPA polled the coaches I did vote to keep the USSSA bats and 47cor balls. After seeing the bats being used in Manassas I am now a believer that we need to keep the U2.
It is the tournaments that don't allow U2's where you find altered and painted bats.

If you want to lower scores lets allow ONE run an inning instead of 7.

Tried to post this earlier but somehow didn't post ...

The Specialty Tank 50's Super major team was NOT using Ultra 2's. They were swinging Worth Mayhems ... some right out of the wrapper. They started slow Friday but came on Saturday night. Curt Hollis hit a couple of balls that probably showed up on the local airport's radar screen. Cecil Whitehead, Bear Chandler and Patty Mac crushed the ball. First time "coach" Matty Digennaro also hit it extremely well.

Bruce's 55 team WAS truly Super with Bruce Meade, Mike Walker, T-Rex and Gary Deaton to name a few. They were impressive.

The Lee County complex fields were excellent. I didn't hear any complaints except that there was only 1 ump for each game until the finals Saturday and tourney play on Sunday. The umps in our games (7 of them) did a great job.

Sorry Gary, I thought you were directing your statement to me.

Tank did put on an awesome hitting display with their Mayhems.

Great fields and officiating.

I saw a first this past weekend. An opposing batter took a pitch with a 3-2 count and the umpire called ball four. Our pitcher complained and said that the ball hit the mat. The umpire though for a second and changed his call to stirke three!
Playing first base I thought that I saw the ball hitting the mat and was surprised at the call. I have to commend the umpire for changing his call. Btw, no complaints from the other team.

Bruce, you are right on the money re/altered bats. It seems to be a growing problem. No need to alter the U2 or the Combat. Don't make the fences over 310 since most of us are slowing down anyway. The outfield is large enough. You could add an 11th defender. One thing is for sure, you won't get a majority to agree on changes. Why not change the ball? I know that has been discussed a lot but when you take the home run away from a lot of players or at least give them the ability to hit the ball hard the number of teams in a tournament dwindles. All the associations get to pick what they think is going to be fair and attract teams. I got it, lets begin testing for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs!!!! Can you see it now, a urine sample line at check in!!!

Just so you will know, the drug testing thing was a joke. I certainly don't want anyone to think I believe that steroids are a common thing or even a random problem. There are just a lot of good hitters out there who have actually gotten better with age. 20 year old scotch anyone?

I thought it was a well run tournament. I heard that they have some 325' fields. The only change I would suggest is to run the Major Plus division on the larger 325' fields and maybe extend the bases 10 feet. Just my thoughts.

Chollis, the fields in Naples (North Collier Sports Complex) were about 325. They had the 60 Major Plus and the 60 AA playing there.

Can't understand the logic of having the older folks playing on the biggest fields! In spite of that, our team, Boaz Export Crating, did hit our five max one game! The fields were great, especially for a new complex, but, since we THOUGHT we were playing in Fort Myers (as advertised), we stayed in North Fort Myers. BIG mistake! We wound up scheduled at Collier in Naples almost an hours drive each way. We left at dark yesterday to arrive early enough to loosen up for our 8AM game!

I am sure glad we didn't play on the 325 foot fences, my BA would have sucked. ha ha
We (Suncoast Sunrays 60 Major) playes on the NW Cape Coral Complex. Great shape and great umpires for the whole tournament. Only 1 ump but they always show lots of husle moving from behind home plate every play.
The Sunrays finished in second, losing the "if" game to the same team Rochester Legends from NY that put us in the losers bracket.
There were some great teams in our bracket and all was well matched. We played the FIRE from KS twice and was a 1 run game both times with the winning run coming in the last inning.
Joseph Chevy (PA) and PSI from (MN) played great all weekend. Sure was fun playing such great teams from another state with GREAT SENIOR ball players.
Our bracket finished (11 teams)

Rochester Legends
Suncoast Sunrays
Human Kinetics
Haples Heat

as the top 4, sorry don't know the rest.

Great job to all the Senior players and especially to the teams extra runners that ran every inning to keep the out feild fresh as possible. Remember you guys a a very big part of any team.

Great job SSUSA
