Thanks, STLO; that made me feel better. There are 3 major signs that one is getting older: 1) loss of memory, and I forget the other 2.

As you age, just remember you are going through the cycle of success. You do remember the cycle of success, don't you?

AGE 4, success is not peeing in your pants
AGE 12, success is having friends
AGE 16, success is having a driver's license
AGE 20, success is having sex
AGE 35, success is having money
AGE 50, success is having money
AGE 60, success is having sex
AGE 70, success is having a driver's license
AGE 75, success is having friends
AGE 80, success is not peeing in your pants

Hope 2015 is a successful year for everyone, regardless of your age

Southpaw, as long as you are not purchasing matching bed pans, you are probably OK. Be grateful every day to have your partner.

One of my favorite lines on the subject is that we in senior softball know everything there is to know about softball...we just have problems remembering it.

Signs of getting softball older

1) You will not play night games
2) You are scared to play like the youngsters with a 1-1 count
3) you are scared to play like the youngsters with homerun limits
4) they sell wintercrest at your tourneys
5) they hand out heart related health info at your events
6) your team needs pitch runners
7) you spend three days playing five games in a tourney
8) you fear facing USSSA pitching while you used to love that game
9) when roids are refered to during a game its "hemerrh" instead of "ste"
10) even with senior bats it's hard to hit a homerun
11) you get to play defense with 11 players and even then..the other team gets five runs almost every inning.
12) every five years you get to be the YOUNG GUY.

Tim, on number 6, I think you meant pinch instead of pitch, but they are actually courtesy runners; this is only important when informing the umpire because there is a difference. I respectfully disagree with number 2 because at least here, the 1-1 count was started as a way to shorten games (another way to cheat players out of a full game as is a one pitch in extra innings or a 55 minute clock). Please no one jump on this to open the old argument, I am fine that everyone has their own opinion on this. You may be just a little younger than me or brought up on Utrip and be used to a 1-1 count; most players here have never played with anything else because once one park did it, they all changed to try and shorten games. So I am not a fan of it because of the way that it was started here as another way to take something from the players. I tell our umpires here that with senior softball to always remember that it could be their last at bat every time they come up to the plate and to give them that respect because let's face it, it could be.

I also tease that they use Poligrip for their bat grip instead of pine tar.

For the 80s, I tell them welcome to 80 and over softball. Pick one:

Hitting
Running
Fielding
Throwing

They always pick hitting.

I learned the hard way that you really have to pay attention to what you are doing. Brushed my teeth one morning, reached for the mouthwash and gargled with Old Spice. Burned all the way down, but had great smelling breath all day!

Old Spice goes on Burritos with cilantro and chipotle, doesn't it?
I'm still waiting for a cup protector made with Depends!
Starting to need a pee bottle in the dugout because it comes on so fast I can't make it to the rest room-but then I have to remember which one is the pee bottle when I go for a drink of water on a hot day. Someday.........
Wife and I walked into a room the other day and we both forgot why we went in there!
Someone asks what hurts and the quicker answer is to tell them what doesn't hurt.
Good thing they made homers hit and sit-umpires were wanting to call delay of the game on me going to first after a long one.
I find myself breathing very hard before the game starts, and i only just tied my shoes.
What if you pulled a hamstring and nobody noticed the difference in your running?

Happy New Year Everyone-welcome to Y2K (I think that is close......or did it go by already?)

Nance and Bruce.

Let's make this a teachable moment on some of the facts....

USSSA incorporated the 1-1 count in an effort to speed up tourney games in the major and AA events that were going ways over the bracketed time posted on the tourney bracket.

These events had no game time limits/always went the full seven other then run rule...

so your IGNORANT view that it was initially used....

"to cheat players out of full games" is neive and just flat out wrong...

This 1-1 rule allowed Major and AA events to stay closer to on schedule.

It was in no way meant to cheat teams out of innings. This should be obvious because innings were never removed from those games.

The same goes for the next move USSSA made with the 1-1 count....many leagues went to 1-1 to try to get Innings of play....that in my view is giving your customer more chances to actually PLAY instead of sit and watch a batter watch yet another hit able pitch go by.

As for Nancy's neive shortened games theory...

All the leagues I played in...concord, walnut creek, pleasant hill, Pinole, Pittsburg, Brentwood, Pleasanton. Orinda were the same.....

When the league went to the 1-1 count..all games times were NEVER shortened...ie....all the teams still had the same mount of time to play...they were never "cheated" out of any time...what the 1-1 count did was speed up the time for a batter to swing which...helped out the pitchers a little, and gave all of us more innocent nags to actually play softball.

We can leave out the USSSA 1-1 no rule education for another time...;-)

TM, let me explain something to you, senior softball isn't USSSA.
You hit on the solution, if "events were going way(s) over the bracketed time posted on the tourney bracket", then imo the time interval should be increased.
One more thing, you need to hit "POST message" only one time to post!
Have a good year!

Tim, we all have our own opinions which makes life interesting. Please do not throw an I-bomb on me for that; I respect that your thoughts are different than mine. I thought that I worded it carefully enough, but let me try again. Here in Indy it was introduced as a way to cheat players once again. I do not know about where you live and play. Here in Indy we have seen many things introduced over the years that were designed to shorten games which in my opinion only were designed to cheat teams out of playing time. Teams pay over $600 for leagues here, and every year a park seems to find another way. This year it was dropping the game time to 55 minutes and mandatory flip flop in the last inning with a 5 run difference.

Also I have umpired major Utrip tournaments many times, and as an umpire, I like that it is different because I like shaking the game up, but I would not play it. Many of our umpires refuse to do the plate because they were raised ASA and would rabbit for me doing the plate only. I don't have a pony in the race and enjoy doing different 'styles' of softball.

From what I have been told, Utrip senior softball uses senior rules. Is that your experience?

I hope that I am more open minded than most people because I value being viewed as fair. There is room for all of our opinions, but we all must deal with the rules at the time.

Bruce, I am glad that we agree on yet another part of the game. I remember the first time that I met you in Georgia when your team kept getting nailed by obscure NSA rules. I have really enjoyed our conversations over the years. I hope to catch up with you again some day. The last time we talked in person, I believe we were in Texas. Who knows maybe this year?

OK, everyone else, I hardly ever share my opinion on charged topics, but since I did, let me share one other that I rarely mention since it was thrown at me in this thread. I really don't like being called Nance. Nan, Nancy, or other nick names are fine. My nick names at the ball park here are Juliet and Nsquared. These are great after game stories if I am ever fortunate enough to get in a conversation with any of you. With 30 years of softball behind me, I have enough stories for a book; so be prepared. I have seen the sun come up many times at the ball park when we get to talking softball. I love this game.

please bruce,nancy..explain how we are loosing innings or time.....no way does the 1-1 count do that.....the only thing that is lost are 2 pitches to the batter who goes to a full count....so again where are the innings or time is lost......by using the 1-1 count........

Southpaw, I love your thread's original message. I apologize if my response to a bad assumption that seniors are afraid of a 1-1 count caused a hijack. Hug your wife a lot because every day we wake up is a good one.

Mad dog, I never said anything about losing time or innings. I was only explaining how the 1-1 count was started here. I prefer 0-0, and you may prefer 1-1. It's OK, there is room for both of us. I just happen to fit the demographic that Dave has had to explain a million and one times. I promise if MLB or senior softball goes to a 1-1 that I will go peacefully with zero arguments. Heck, even ASA dropped their arch to 10 feet, Utrip got rid of the extra foul, and NSA adopted the 1-1 count; so anything is possible.

Getting old often causes some people to think that only their opinion is the only way; so let's stay young and open minded. I value all of your thoughts and opinions even if they do not match my own. So leave this thread alone, and call me if you want to.

Southpaw, let's answer that bat phone; it's for us.

As for signs of growing older, I find I now need my reading glasses to read the brackets. Maybe the ones that make up the brackets should increase the size of the letters. ;)

Nancy, I am sorry about being a little over aggressive with my initial reply.

I will put some of the blame for my over reaction to how much crap I got when I helped push the 1-1 count into our Concord league.

In the end...only a small minority of league players did not end up liking the change..

With 65 minute time limits, the 1-1 count averaged awarding us at least one more inning per game of actual softball play.

As for tourneys and the 1-1 count..before it was installed in no time limit brackets of play some brackets would get as far off as 3 hours...the 1-1 count drastically reduced the scheduled time over runs.

I have to admit...I am a HUGE fan of the 1-1 count...it redices the down time during games,, helps a good pitcher a little, it keeps games on schedule...

Tim, I appreciate the apology. I know circumstances are different there than here. We have not had a 65 minute time limit for over 20 years in leagues. Of the two largest parks here, one dropped to 55 minutes this year, and the other does not allow another inning to start if the game clock is under a minute (why not just set the clock to 59 minutes?). I think the only thing left for them to shorten the game on us is to start with one out each half inning or limit us to less total innings, probably both eventually.

I grew up with 0-0; so as with increased taxes, I feel something has been taken away. For seniors, it is a little bit more about respect to me. I figure that having survived softball this long that players deserve all they can get since every at bat could be their last. So my focus is more on individual batters than the game as a whole. Both of us will feel how we do which is fine. With attrition of those of us who started playing 0-0, you will probably get your 1-1 count some day.

One thing I found interesting was at a Utrip regional that I umpired a few years ago, in our meeting before the tournament, the UIC went to great lengths to explain to us that Utrip did not have a 1-1 count. He said it was a 0-0 count, they just had one less ball and strike. I guess it all depends on your perspective. My indicator has 4 balls and 3 strikes; so I still set it at 1-1, no matter what he said.

Why not have the ump ask both teams before the coin flip if they want to play 1 - 1 for that game? If both teams agree then they play 1 - 1 for that game; there are plenty of times when this would probably happen even with teams that prefer 0 - 0 like when it's 100 degrees or late in the day, etc.

DCPete ... At the risk of continuing this thread hijack for one more off-topic post, here's why not ... We insist that all SSUSA sanctioned qualifiers be administered under the exact same rule set across all qualifiers all season ... Whether or not scoring turns out to be different, for any variety of reasons, under 0-0 vs. 1-1 count in any given game/tournament, the integrity of the scoring data is immediately suspect ... That potential cannot be allowed to exist or it undermines the entire qualification and rating evaluation system ... Hope this is clear as to what our position continues to be ...

Tim-you are a pitcher and I never met a pitcher that didn't love the one-one count. As a hitter, it really makes little difference to me either was-it is an adjustment you make as a hitter. To get back on topic-think of it this way-as we get older, it is 2 less pitches to count as you hit!
And, on a related note-we had an inch of snow the other day, and in my forgetfulness of what I went out to do, I got to the driveway and had a rake in my hand. Sure didn't shovel the snow too well.

This happened 2 times recently...wife and I go golfing. After arriving I remove her clubs....place her bag behind me..look into the trunk and say...Honey..we forgot to put your clubs in the trunk!

After making a 1 hr drive to a golf course,,,I leave my bag at the bag drop, park..as I begin to put my shoes on "realize" I don't see my clubs
and spend about 5-10 minutes calling my wife,cursing... etc before I remember my clubs are at the bag drop...I am 62 1/2...so it begins.....
