Rain vs Tournaments
After the rain in So Cal this weekend, 2 tournaments were canceled. They started but did not finish.

I know everyone wants to play and Tournament Officials want to make it happen, but there should be guidelines to start tournaments. I think there needs to be some criteria for Rain% forecast that would cancel the tournament before it starts.
We all watch the Weather, 30-40-50-60% forecast - we stay home?

This is way to subjective to just say % we play % we stay home. All parks and municipalities have policy's regarding rain. None are the same. In the case of Hemet if the fields are too wet play is suspended. But the park makes that decision not the T.D. Yes we can cancel but if we do it and the field conditions turn out they are favorable at game time we loose a $500 deposit plus are billed for all fields reserved. In Temecula if you start the second game slot you own the field until 10:00 PM. So if it rains after the second game starts say goodbye to $1,000 for that day. If a tournament is cancelled within 30 days we not only loose the $1250 deposit that is kept in perpetuity we also loose that date for the following year. San Clemente we have to pay in full 30 days in advance. If we cancel anytime in that 30 days we loose our deposit and are liable for both days. Game day it’s the park that makes the call. If they call it we loose nothing. So in most cases it’s the park that makes the ultimate call.

Hemet was difficult for all. Not a drop of rain hit the ground Saturday. So do you cancel the weekend over a three day forecast? We live in Southern California where the weather forecasts are never the same at different Sites or TV Stations. I have 5 sites I monitor days in advance and loose plenty of sleep doing so. Saturday night it was suppose to rain 52% chance at 8:00 PM and again 47% at 4 AM. Sunday. It did neither. I left my home at 6:15 AM Sunday where it was suppose to be raining according to Doppler and it wasn't. I got to the park at 6:45 AM and not a drop of rain hit my windshield all the way there. When I met with the park people they gave me the go ahead. It was my hope and theirs that the rain would skirt us like it does so many times all year. This wasn't to be and at 9:00 AM it rained sufficiently enough that the grounds crew called the tournament. I didn't like it and neither did any of the teams. However I am not unsympathetic to the cost of coming to these events. All tournaments have to handled on a case by case basis. In this case I am issuing partial refunds for all teams that attended.

Marv, thank you for your insight into the world of tournament policies. I understand the difficulty of the situation regarding Rain. Outdoor sports when rain occurs becomes a very uneasy event.

I appreciate your acknowledgement and refund.

We all want to play ball.
