Shoulder Pain
Gentlemen, I could use some input on treating an aching shoulder. I am trying to avoid another shoulder surgery. This is my right shoulder (throwing arm). here is some background info. I have had a mumford procedure on this shoulder 11 yrs ago. Also had right elbow surgery to remove dead muscle some 8 yrs ago. I have been playing approx. 170-200 games per yr between senior and u-trip for the past 10 years. I do play outfield. I currently weightlift 4-5 days per week (down to 2-3 since shoulder trouble)and take bp 2 days per week. Currently, I do exercises with bands, take ibuprophen, use ice and electric stimulation. The weightlifting is currently mainly arms and legs, no shoulder work. The treatment tends to make the shoulder feel better overall. But, the minute I put a ball in my hand an attempt to throw the pain shoots threw my shoulder. It doesn't do that when I simulate throwing w/o a ball it doesn't hurt. This has been going on for 2 months now. My wife seems to think that my job as a personal trainer is a major cause. I demonstrate various exercises and do approx. 400 reps per day for the past 9 mths may be the cause. As all you maried guys know the Mrs. is probably correct.
Luckily the arm workouts have helped so I can still lift a 22 oz Applebees beer.
Any ideas or input would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Besides all the sprays, ointments, etc, there are the steroid shots. All work to some point but
it really depends on the why it hurts. Arthritis, strains, pulls or torn???
You don't want to continue like this should it be worse than you think...
Have it checked out...
I paid dearly for letting it go. Don't do the same.
Best of 'luck' to you.

What has worked for me is ShoulderShield can be found at www.shouldershield.com. A little expensive but it really works for me. It is a jersey with special material in the shoulders and arms that keeps the heat in. When I get done after our games my shoulder and arm are all wet. The only problem I have found with it is on a really hot day it is uncomfortable especially if you get a tight fit.

Have you had an MRI yet to see if there is some structural damage? Gone to see an orthopedic doctor?

I had very similar symptoms as you where it only hurt when I threw a ball (actually at the point of release) and it was a very sharp pain. I waited 3 years living with it because it only hurt throwing. I too couldn't do any shoulder (overhead) work when weight lifting. I'm sure waiting to get it fixed made the injury worse.

This past December I had surgery. They removed a bone spur which had torn my supraspinatus rotator cuff, repaired the rotator cuff and reattached my biceps lower on my arm out of the shoulder joint since that was torn also.

Good luck!

overuse injuries are very common at our age....we think more is better and will keep us in shape BUT, the tendons and ligaments get less flexible as we age and don't bounce back like they used to do.....I did extensive research on shoulder injuries and aside from serious tears which need surgery, cutting back on over use activities or activities that aggravate the area are reduced to a minimum......I work around the area and do things that don't hurt or twinge the area.....teammate had rotator cuff surgery last year and this spring will be first test on it.....there are three tests to see what is the problem, neer test, Hawkins test and drop test....look these up on you tube and the Hawkins videos are extensive and informative......you and other will learn a ton of info

Tendonitis, arthritis, bursitis. Take your pick.

Could be scar tissue.

Stretching exercises will help. Some light therapy.

My shoulder hurts now from pushing the mouse around for a little while.

I ruined mine working at the post office over 25 years.

Fred S ~ a small dab of Capsisain (sp.?). That will keep you heated up for all day. Just be careful not to touch anything anywhere. Use rubber gloves to apply it.

About 10 years ago third time up in first game in Lansing, MI I injured my shoulder by swing the bat and hitting a ball back to the fence in left on a line drive. I went to two surgeons that said I needed an operation. Finally, I went to the head of sports medicine and pain management at a local hospital. He said no surgery just physical therapy and different exercises - I was too well developed in the front of my body (benching 400+) and from now on two exercises for my back for every on for my front. Two sets of 15 whatever I can handle easily before moving up.

It may not be the same thing but check it out with a sports medicine DR. You may simply need to change your approach to weightlifting. Just a thought.
