March 26, 2015 Kyphogt Men's 55 28 posts | The Villages I will be heading down to the Villages for the Easter Holiday weekend (4/3-4/6) and was hoping to get a few swings outside after a lovely winter in Boston where we will be lucky to get on any fields by 4/18. Any opportunities to hit with anyone before they close fields down after winter ball for maintenance? Thanks George |
March 26, 2015 17Black Men's 60 414 posts | I'm coming down between 4-18 and 4-30 Last year when I was there they had open hitting around 2PM (I think?) at Saddlebrook a couple days a week. Does anybody know if they still do three open try-outs on Tuesdays??? I believe this was to get "your rating" and eligible for their drafts???? |
March 26, 2015 whels 1 posts | yes they still do the try-out on tueday. |
March 26, 2015 BudLeftField 86 posts | Hi George- There is open batting practice all day on Sundays including Easter . There are Division tournaments going on now during the week. The fields should close for maintenance on 4/11 and open in early May. The Buffalo Glen complex will be closed for the entire month of May for major maintenance. Division 1 and 2 will be combined for the first time, and will play at Saddlebrook in May and move to Buffalo Glen June 1st for the rest of the summer. The new complex, Soaring Eagle, is now open, and the 68 yr. old classic league and the women's league are playing there. March 26, 2015 Kyphogt Men's 55 28 posts | Thanks Bud..so I can go to any of the fields (ie Buffalo Glen) and hit on Sunday during the day? Also, Is there a certain field/time where guys gather to hit? thx George |
March 27, 2015 BudLeftField 86 posts | Hi George- You can go to any complex and take batting and fielding practice. The players usually start hitting before 8 a.m. I prefer the Saddlebrook complex( next to the Polo field) It is located on Buena Vista blvd, About a quarter mile north of Road 466. There are no set times for any particular groups. I am playing in two tournaments at the present time-Central Florida league as well as the Rec league, so I will be resting on Easter Sunday. Bud |
March 29, 2015 17Black Men's 60 414 posts | Bud: Do the Sunday sessions go on all day, after starting before 8AM???? My new home is closest to Soaring Eagle, are they doing this there too?? I am still living full time in Ohio, however, I will be down for a couple Tuesdays end of April & want to start getting my "try-out" process started? Is there a contact guy for the try-outs, or d you just "show up" ????? Does everybody have to try out? I've been playing on a 50 Major Team, the past few years in Ohio, and going to tournaments between both coasts?? |
March 29, 2015 BudLeftField 86 posts | Hi 17Black- practice is permitted on all of the fields any time there are no league games scheduled. All the fields are open all day Sunday. Everyone has to have 3 evaluations. They are normally held at Buffalo Glen complex at 8 on Tuesday mornings. After you are evaluated, you are required to play one season at that level. After the first season, you may move up or down one level every season. There is an open draft before each season. If you are not drafted at the level you want to play, you will be dropped down to the next lowest level, or you can stay at the level you desire to play at as a sub. As a 50 major player, I am sure you will be evaluated as a 1st division player. Just show up at evaluations with your Villages I.D. The 3 evaluations do not have to be done consecutively. You can do them whenever you can. Divisions 1 and 2 are playing together this summer and will have 15 teams. After you are evaluated you can sign up to play as a substitute in any of the games. Each team has 12 players. Currently, there are about 60 subs signed up for Div. 1/2 this summer, but all newly evaluated subs have priority and play first. Good luck. Bud |
March 30, 2015 17Black Men's 60 414 posts | Bud: GREAT INFO-----------THANK YOU!!! This is huge help to me, for when I get down there. |
April 1, 2015 BudLeftField 86 posts | Hi 17Black-Just found out that there will be no evaluations until Jun. 2 due to major maintenance at Buffalo Glen complex. The Saddlebrook complex will be open after maintenance on Apr. 25th, so you can hit there on the 26th. The summer draft is tomorrow night, and when I find out what team I'm on, we will be having a practice on Wed. the 29th. If you are here you can practice with my team. Bud |
April 14, 2015 17Black Men's 60 414 posts | BudLeftGField: Thanks for that info!!!! Yes I am coming down the 18th through end of the month. Do you know if there is any hitting going on anywhere on the 19th??? I believe Buffalo Glen is down all month, and sounds like Saddlebrook is down a couple weeks. Do they do open hitting at Soaring Eagle???? Up here in Ohio the snow just melted in my neighborhood literally a week ago. Had our first outside practice this past weekend, I need to get in playing shape fast LOL--------winter and long hours at work took a toll on me last five or six months. When I leave the Villages, end of month I am driving straight to Indianapolis for the Brickyard Tournament--------so I am using some time in Florida for "spring training" |
April 15, 2015 BudLeftField 86 posts | Hi 17Black-The Soaring Eagle complex is open . I'm sure there will be batting practice there on the 19th. The phone # for softball info is 352-259-5377. That is the Saddlebrook rec center. If you are around on the 29th, look me up. I am playing for the Indians. All Div.1/2 teams will be practicing at Saddlebrook. Divisions 1and 2 always play on wed. & Fri. -Bud |
