THE "HOT BALL" DILEMA
THINKING BACK TO WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN........ I RECALL PLAYING IN THE PRE-SEASON "SUPER MAJOR SHOOTOUT" AT RUMPKE PARK IN CINCINNATI

IN THE VERY EARLY 90"S. A LOT OF THE BIG FACTORY TEAMS WERE THERE, WORTH, L.S., DIMARINI, EASTON, ETC. AT THAT TIME WE USED A 47COR

525COMP SUPER BLUE DOT WORTH. (WE CALLED THEM SUPER BALLS). DIMARINI HAD THE ONLY DUAL SHELL BAT I THINK AT THE TIME AND THE WORTH

SUPERCELL WAS THE BAT OF CHOICE FOR MOST. AFTER A 10 YEAR LAYOFF AND JUST STARTING TO PLAY AGAIN AT 55 (I DO PITCH ABOUT 50% OF THE

TIME). I WOULD MUCH RATHER TAKE A SHOT UP THE MIDDLE OFF OF A NICE ROUND COMPOSITE BAT WITH A "ROCK", THAN A SHOT UP THE MIDDLE BACK

THEN WITH A BAT THAT RESEMBLED A WELL USED WAFFLE IRON. I GOT HIT 4 TIMES IN THAT TOURNAMENT AND HAD THE LUMPS FOR TWO YEARS TO

PROVE IT. THE TRUMP STOTE BALL WILL TRAVEL WHEN HIT, EVEN IN HOT WEATHER. YOU JUST HAVE TO HIT IT GOOD. NOT ALMOST, BUT ON THE SCREWS.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT? I PLAY IN WINTER HAVEN FL. HOME OF EVER PRESENT HEAT AND HUMIDITY, SO I KNOW OF WHAT I SPEAK.....I GUESS THE

POINT OF ALL THIS RAMBLING IS THAT TECHNOLOGY CHANGES, AND AS WE AGE, WE EITHER ADAPT......... OR TAKE UP GOLF!!

Doerbaum, you bring up an interesting topic that has been debated many times on this board. The composite bats of today, and the 44-375 balls that we now use. As compared with the aluminum bats of yesteryear and the balls that were used then. The 47-525 Red Dots or the Super Blues that were used as late as 2005 or so, were golf balls. The Demarini double walls were a technological breakthrough similar to what the composites of today have been, except they were aluminum. As a result, the balls were dumbed down to the 44-375s that we have today. I would gladly go back to the double walls and the balls that we used then. The longest shots I have hit, or seen hit, were with that combination.

THE REASON I BROACHED THIS SUBJECT WAS READING AN OLD POST WITH GUYS

COMPLAINING ABOUT THE KNUCKLE BALLS GENERATED BY THE COMPOSITE BATS

WITH THE "ROCK" BALLS. (WHATEVER THEY ARE?) THIS IS NOT A NEW THING....

LIKE I SAID ABOVE, TRY FOLLOWING A 47/525 BALL HIT WITH A DIMARINI THAT

LOOKS LIKE ITS BEEN WORKED OVER WITH A BALL PEEN HAMMER! AS A PITCHER

I THINK SAFETY IS A CONCERN, HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE NOT CAPABLE OF FIELDING

THE POSITION (READ REFLEXES AND FOOTWORK) TRY ANOTHER POSITION. AS TO

THE "STOTE" NOT FLYING, (THAT IS WHAT WE USE IN OUR LESGUE HERE IN W.H.)

I HAVE AVERAGED 2 PER GAME SINCE I STARTED PLAYING LAST NOVEMBER. THE

TOURNEY IN POLK CO. THIS PAST WEEKEND WAS HOTTER THAN HADES AND I SAW

NO SHORTAGE OF BALLS LEAVING THE YARD. I ALSO AGREE, LETS GO BACK TO

THE MID 90'S DOUBLE WALLS (PICK YOUR BRAND) AND THE 47/525 BALL. SAW

RANDY QUARTERKRAK (GORDO) HIT ONE THAT HAD TO GO 525' AT RUMPKE

PARK IN CINCINNATI. OF COURSE HE WAS 6'8", 290 AND PLAYED FOR

STEELE'S . I THINK HE PLAYED A YEAR OR TWO WITH MR. GORILLA BOY IF I

RECALL CORRECTLY. I GUESS MY POINT IS, SERIOUS INJURY HAS ALWAYS BEEN

AN ISSUE WITH THIS GAME, AND TO STAND ON THE MOUND YOU GOT TO BE A

BIT "CRAZY" TO BEGIN WITH !!
